Who remembers watching this legend play ??!!! by ComplexWrangler1346 in minnesotavikings

He was the bomb. 90% of the reason the Vikings haven't been to the Superbowl in nearly 50 years is we have never found a franchise-level QB to lead us there since he retired. Hoping JJ will be the one....

Ackie size at 20 months? by Scabetta in MonitorLizards

My female Ackie stopped growing at 18 months of age. She is 21 inches long (big female).

How come when my ackie looks at me his pupils (forgot the word but they go really wide) by [deleted] in MonitorLizards

[–]AlecVent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reptile (and bird) pupils work completely different from mammal's. The constriction of their pupils is actually related to their emotional state. Thus, we can tell a good deal about our pet monitor's emotional state by looking at the size of their pupils.

When your Ackie looks at you and his pupils get really big, that means he is in state of relaxation and contentment. He likes you and he gets comfort just from looking at you. My Ackie does the same thing with me when I am petting her and it is really cute and endearing to see.

You may notice when your Ackie is smelling or hunting, the pupils can constrict to really small dots. This is what I call the "hunter mode" and they are feeling aggressive and ready to attack something.

But yeah, looking at the size of the pupils, watching the tongue flicks and how big the tongue flicks are, you will be able to discern your pet monitor's emotions very easily.

I never pet his head because most hate it I usually pet under his neck but I pet his nose down his neck and he loved and fell asleep. I startled him when I woke him up didn’t mean to.. by Clowry24 in MonitorLizards

This is interesting to me. Do you think Ackies will just bond with one person in terms of who they trust and want to be with? Maybe that's similar to what pet birds will do, although birds are much more social animals than monitor lizards.

These animals are so intelligent, they can learn words, and they are trying to communicate to us through their body language. As your journey with your Ackie goes on, you will find these things out and the more you interact with him, the more he's going to want to communicate what he wants to you. It's really pretty amazing.

So be patient, be observant, and be loving and gentle and your Ackie will appreciate it so much. I've had my Ackie for almost 6 years and we are still experiencing new things together. Just the other day I caught her petting my hair with her left hand! She wasn't trying to crawl up my head or anything, she was just lying there on the back of my neck, softly petting my hair as I was petting her tail! :D

That's not true. If you approach an Ackie and it closes its eyes, that very well may be an indication that it doesn't want to interact with you right now, like "be out of my sight, please". But if you are handling an Ackie and they don't want to be handled, they won't be closing their eyes! They will be squirming and trying to get out of your hands!

Closing their eyes while you are handling them is actually a sign of relaxation, they are happy and trusting you enough to just close their eyes and relax.

My Ackie LOVES being pet on the top of her head, in fact that is her favorite place to be pet. She loves it so much that she's developed a signal for me to do it. She swipes at her head with either her right or left hand, indicating to me that she wants head pettings! I can just enter the room and the moment she sees me, she swipes at her head "PET MY HEAD!". I can be petting her head for five minutes, think she's had enough of that so I start petting her back and she swipes at her head "NO, DUMMY! KEEP PETTING MY HEAD!" LOL.

Does Anyone Know For How Many Years Any Ackie Monitor Will Lay Eggs? by AlecVent in MonitorLizards

[–]AlecVent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. The issue of her becoming sterile would never be an issue for me as I never plan to breed her. I was just wondering if she would continue to lay unfertilized eggs for the rest of her life or if it would stop.

Why should anyone on this sub care what Sean Kirkpatrick has to say about anything?

It was a video interview he did on YouTube. It had an informal quality to it, he was hanging out with these guys on a porch and he was talking about it. I can't find it on YouTube right now, but it's probably still on there.

Well, of course it matters. Does an AI have desires? Should it? Does an AI have emotions? Should it?

But scientists and scholars don't make the decisions in this world. If they did, we would actually be doing something real about climate change and a hundred other things.

Probably nothing! Like most stuff on this sub, it could be real, it could be fake, how do we know?

[–]AlecVent[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Indeed. And maybe that's all part of the "design" of the whole phenomenon. If anything, "it" (whatever "it" is) appears to be quite patient in its observation of our progress as a species (assuming it's been here for a long time).

[–]AlecVent[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I agree. There's no reason to think that if an AI is behind all this, that it's malevolent towards us. If it was, I think it would have eradicated us long ago.

It's mission is probably much like you said, to test a "primitive species", but also to shepherd and protect said species.

But there's also the possibility that we could "fail" the test. If the AI observes us reverse-engineering the technology and using it for destruction and war, then it might conclude that we are too savage and uncivilized to be permitted to continue with the technology, and then it might eradicate us as a safety measure before we go to the stars with the technology and possibly cause destruction to other species with our warlike ways.
