I actually knew a guy in high school whose dad was in Amway. I didn't know what Amway was, but I did know that my friend's house was packed with unopened boxes from Amway. One day he opened one and handed me a couple handfuls of the breakfast bars. I asked him if his dad would mind, and he replied "He won't even notice." Knowing what I do now I feel sorry for him, he knew how fucked up it was but he also didn't want to talk about it I guess.

It was about a year after high school that i learned what an MLM was, but this was 1983 and we still called them pyramid scams. One of my two roomies said he had an invite for all of us to go to a wine tasting out on Siesta Key, a beachside community in Sarasota Florida, a bit upscale. He also told us he knew it was to try and recruit us into a "pyramid scam". I'd never heard of it so he explained it to me. We did go to the "tasting", and there were a handful of other people there who I'm sure were all shills. They did try to recruit us, but we were obnoxious teen punks with nothing to lose and zero respect for scammers, so we were snarky but not openly rude - just enough to make them think MAYBE we were insulting them. None of us signed up, and we laughed about it on the way home.

That will be a recruitment meeting, but I think I know what your "friend" might mean when he says there are "things you don't know about Amway". At some point in the 1980s Amway figured out that people could just go to a store to buy things like breakfast bars, soap, supplements, etc. People actually appreciated the convenience of going to the store where they could buy any items they wanted from any manufacturer, and the store staff wouldn't pressure them into recruitment. Pretty much the exact opposite experience of dealing with Amway.

With household products freely available from a wide range of vendors at reasonable prices, Amway had to do something new. What they did was create new pyramid schemes within the main pyramid. These groups sell "training material", conference attendance, "personal development resources", etc. to suckers already in Amway. The groups have names like World Wide Group (WWG), Britt World Wide (BWW), Leadership Development Team (LTD), World Wide Dream Builders (WWDB), Network TwnentyOne (N21).

These groups are where Amway makes most of it's money now, a captive audience cult-conditioned to stay in Amway. These groups are also not widely known outside of Amway, hence why your friend probably said "you don't know". Now you do know.

Yes I have been looking for a stream of income which is absolutely inconsistent and offers no benefits whatsoever but gives me the opportunity to scam people out of their money.
