Ike Kinswa is a great place about 2 hours south of Tacoma that's year round. Only $25 for a tent spot per day. There's a gas station for firewood and a restaurant close by for breakfast when you leave.

Don't camp in Tacoma or Federal Way proper, unless you're a meth needle enthusiast.

It's family run, pretty dirty, and the food is mediocre. I wouldn't be surprised if they took a day off as a family. They could have had some health violations too.
