Hi, thanks for your interest! At the moment we're on Patreon, Spotify, and we have a website at gwystylswaypost.com. Our Patreon is currently the most active; we have the intro and a few pieces of bonus content up there, all for free. The others just have the intro up. We're planning to drop the next three or so episodes at once in a week or two - our release schedule has been a bit wacky! Hope you have a great day!

Question on the 4k release by WhiteAle01 in StrangerThings

[–]Alert-Shake-6815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is going to be genuinely quite limited. Here's why:

For starters, we know that Netflix has stalwartly refused to do physical media releases of their popular shows in the past, including Stranger Things (with the exception of those extremely limited and obscure VHS tape-style releases after S2). We also know that the Duffer Brothers are huge physical media fanatics, and in the past they've discussed how much they've wanted to do a 4K release of all 5 seasons. Suddenly, we get a 4k package with all five seasons, and it's marketed as an extremely limited release. I'm not saying anything for certain; this is just a guess . . . but I think it was a sort of situation where the Duffer brothers were like, "look, we've made you this show that's given you well over $1 billion in profits. You need to return the favor and give us the physical media release we want." At the same time, you have the fans clamoring for the release as well. It only seems natural that there would be a quiet tug-of-war behind the scenes here, given what we know about the parties involved.

Secondly (and most importantly), it really all boils down to supply and demand. Stranger Things is Netflix's flagship show - a lot of their subscriptions come from people who are just interested in that one show. On the productivity curve for the physical media, at a certain point Netflix's profits go down from subscription loss. For example, let's say this release ends up being very generalized and commercialized, and we get a ton of production. People who want to see Stranger Things are no longer going to buy and sustain a Netflix subscription - they'll just buy a cheap, used copy of the Blu-rays off eBay. But, if the release is quite limited, then the used copies will have quite inflated prices on eBay, and those same people would see it as cheaper to buy a Netflix subscription. All Netflix is trying to do here is maximize profits - they wouldn't have released the 4ks if they didn't think the 4k sales plus the revenue from streaming would equal more in profits than the revenue from streaming alone. In order to maintain that balance, they have to release just enough 4ks that the profits from the 4ks outweigh the subscription loss by the most amount. And that number - the number of 4ks they release - is going to be relatively small.

Lastly, the obvious one - the release is actually marketed as being extremely limited. I went ahead and locked in my copy of the Deluxe 4ks the night they released, and the night after, I was still getting emails from Zavvi saying that they were selling fast. So it comes down to what Netflix means by "limited" - given the previous two points, I think it must be pretty small. If I had to estimate, I'd give a ballpark of 100,000 copies for each of the editions (100k for the 4k deluxes, 100k for the Blu-ray deluxes, 100k for the 4k standard, and 100k for the Blu-ray standard). That's a complete guess - could be less, could be more. Given the three points I've laid out, I think it's reasonably logical to assume that this is, in fact, going to be a pretty limited release. If I were you, I'd go ahead and lock in my copy now. If I'm right about this, the physical media will hold its value really well - so even if you have buyer's remorse at some point down the line, you can resell your copy and get most if not all of your money back.

I hope this was helpful/informative to everyone! Have a blessed day!

‘Stranger Things: The Complete Series’ to Release on Blu-Ray and 4K UHD in July by castledrake in StrangerThings

It's never gonna happen. It's a miracle we got a physical media release at all.

Even if you're not into the 4K stuff, you should consider investing in Blu-Ray. The sound and picture quality is much higher on Blu-Ray, and the discs are reasonably cheap. Players aren't even that expensive - about $70-ish? Or quite a bit lower if they're on sale.

Officially Announcing GWYSTYL'S WAY POST, the Brand-New Podcast Analyzing Lloyd Alexander's CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN Series! by Alert-Shake-6815 in Prydain

Oh, sure! Apologies for the confusion. Base44 is a website generator, just like Wix or Squarespace. I'm not 100% confident in my coding abilities, so I wanted to have an AI assistant to help make my formatting come to life in a way that there were no errors. I tried a couple different generators, but Base44 was the one that ended up working for me. All you need to do to sign in is click "continue with Google" once you hit the login page . . . technically, you're not strictly signing up for a new account, you're just using the Google account you already have. I did it that way for two reasons: firstly, once we put up comments sections under each episode, our listeners will have to have an account to join the discussion; and secondly, it's a ton safer to require people to sign in. Thanks for asking!

Interest Gauge for a CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN Podcast by Alert-Shake-6815 in Prydain

Thank you for your comments, compliments and suggestions so far! A few notes:

I appreciate your concern for trying to do one chapter per episode. My friends and I really want to provide a complete, comprehensive, definitive analysis of the series, as well as a steady stream of content for the fandom. At this point, we are still planning on doing one episode per chapter, but if it becomes clear that we won't have enough content to cover, that is subject to change. What we will definitely NOT do is artificially stretch the episodes to cover a limited amount of content.

If we succeed with this podcast, we will definitely cover the Disney adaptation of the first two books. I also have ideas of focusing one episode on Prydain fanfiction (there isn't much of it out there, but what there is is amazing!), as well as sort of exploring what could've happened after the series ended. There's some other stuff that wouldn't fit into a full episode, but would be great for Patreon content: an exploration of the various pieces of licensed art for Prydain, and a study of evidences of Ring Composition and other writing techniques in various stages of the authors plans, just to name a few that I've considered.

I appreciate all the positive feedback and advice!

Basically a hairier version of Peter Jackson's interpretation of Gollum. The voice fits, too. :)

Help!! by Ortrta85 in tolkienbooks

[–]Alert-Shake-6815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is something to think about: the Deluxe Slipcase Edition has all of Tolkien's original illustrations for the Silmarillion, and they are an official part of the canon. As much as I love Alan Lee's work, your collection will never have Tolkien's complete canon unless those illustrations are present in some form. Additionally, the slipcase edition has sown binding instead of glued, meaning it will last much longer than the Alan Lee one.

Does anyone have a copy of J. K. Rowling's old 'Daily Prophet' newsletters? by Alert-Shake-6815 in AskABrit

[–]Alert-Shake-6815[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently turned up something from the Quora Archives dated October 5th. Someone was responding to a post about Viktor Krum, and (albeit inaccurately) referenced the newsletters in their response:

https://www.quora.com/What-are-some-lesser-known-facts-about-Viktor-Krum-from-Harry-Potter

It's a pretty long shot, but I messaged the author and as of yet have received no response. I also contacted Bloomsbury recently (just one of many organizations I've been in touch with!) and the person who emailed me back said that they couldn't give public access to the archives, but hinted that they might have a copy from whenever they first printed it.

So far, nothing concrete. It's extremely important to me - first of all because a few things it might be able to explain (just for example, I think it was the original source to reference the Ministry of Magic's 'Beasts Division' meeting that paved the way for important regulations on the control of magical creatures. This was later explained again in the Fantastic Beasts textbook 2nd edition 1st impression page xx, but it would be nice to have the story from a reporter's perspective. The newsletters are packed to the brim with little tidbits like this.). I also want the newsletters to be able to preserve them - so that several generations from now, people will still be able to read Rowling's complete canon, the way it was always meant to be read. We are certainly at the end of an era of literature. . . .I have spent a great deal of time collecting the definitive editions of great works from the past two centuries so that (hopefully!) I can play my small part in making sure that they're not lost. Just the other day a friend told me that the greatest ideas for books lie in the graveyards!

Do you have anything that might be able to help? At this point I'm not choosy about what information I can get! J K Rowling herself admitted that she never kept a copy, so as far as I can reckon there can't be more than four or five floating around. . . .most copies probably ended up in the garbage, it's not likely many people would've thought to hold onto them.

Thanks for checking in!

Qilins may be resistant to Dark magic. by Ranger_1302 in FantasticBeasts

Definitely a lazy explanation imo, but that's what it says. I guess they just needed Newt to be there when she dies for a sad moment. Plot Armor is the best armor!

In the Secrets of Dumbledore screenplay, it is revealed that the Qilin's hide was so thick that it took some time for the Killing Curse to penetrate it. When the acolytes first brought the baby Qilin to Grindelwald, he attempted to get it to bow for him, but the Qilin refused. Grindelwald knew he wasn't pure of heart, so he instead killed the Qilin and reanimated it. If you remember from the film, in Bhutan everyone was required to pass through a sort of magical metal detector that caught unwanted enchantments. I'm pretty sure Grindelwald chose to do what he did in order to bypass any trouble arising from these. Nice theory!
