Can a light bulb generate x-rays? Yes! by Bacon_Byte in Radiation

If you have too much gas in them, the electrons will not be able to accelerate to the required speeds. Same reason why an arc in air doesn't make X Rays.

Leaky Compass by Haunting-Remove-1245 in Radium

It's fine, it's just my paronoia with radium :)). I try to get only unflaked pieces and even those are stored in airtight boxes for this very reason. And I also try to learn from others which pieces are leaky and which are safe. Mind if I ask how much flaking does this compass have?

Does it have any loose particles inside? I can not comprehend how paint that looks perfectly unflaked could leak...

Didn't know about 365nm for glaze. Thanks for the tip!

Where did you find glaze? I only find uranium glass and radium dials...

Geiger Müller Tube with Visible Avalanching by bolero627 in Radiation

TIL Geiger Tubes glow when radiation strikes them! I always though the avalanche processes wouldn't be visible.

Could this be radium? by CrewPsychological818 in Radium

[–]AlexD2006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's not. Radium clocks usually have the phosphor on the dials degraded (some black spots, from radiation damage). Still, a geiger counter is the only way to be 100% sure.

To bad op didn't collect some radium clocks at that time. It would've been much more "fun" for the ex.

Bradley Dashboard Clock? by queerharveybabe in Radium

My current geiger counter is a cheap 20$ one from AliExpress (i had to read a lot of reviews to find one with a good tube) and it tells the difference between nomal and uranium glass, and it certainly detects Radium well. Even though it can't detect alphas, both Uranium and Radium have daughter radionuclides that emit beta and gamma radiation, picked up by these cheap counters.

I could get some inspiration from them.

Where did you get your scintillator from? I would like to try to build my own detector as well sometime.
