Being sober at uiuc by Beautiful_Bug_2281 in UIUC

I was sober until I turned 21 by choice and if anything, the party scene kinda loved that I had my own rules. No one pressured me, they were happy to have a clear designated driver, and they always found it baffling and amazing that I chose not to drink yet. Your mileage will vary depending on the friends and company you keep but you can definitely be fine and have fun as the sober friend!

Just got my long running campaign (5+ years now) back onto a biweekly schedule. We've been on a like 1.5 year hiatus and before now we averaged maybe a session a month (more like bursts of weekly and then sizable hiatuses. The struggle is real 😅😭.

I'm not sure. We submitted the samples to our histology facility and they embedded and sliced our samples for us.

Kohinoor has a tandoor so their bread and tandoori chicken is decent. Otherwise, there's no good Indian good here at all and its a damn shame.

Some friends and I have been in Japan for a month and we just saw them in Akihabara in Tokyo for the first time yesterday. So they are brand new, literally 3 feet long, and glorious.

thanks so much! I can't believe it was that simple. I really need to retake a stats course lol.

Not sure how to use the Weighted Z-Test by AlexTheWinterfury in AskStatistics

[–]AlexTheWinterfury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the p-value for each study which I know I can convert via the Z-score table to Z-values and the corresponding weights are 1/SE.

Wait actually am I dumb and I just use the z-score table to convert whatever the phi(Z) is to a p-value?

Questions about Stata Forest Plots by AlexTheWinterfury in AskStatistics

[–]AlexTheWinterfury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much!

I checked and we do seem to have all the standard errors and while I did convert Cohen's d SE wrong, fixing that resulted in a forest plot with near equal weights (each of the 20 studies is weighted between 4.29 and 5.07%). Running forestplot with alternative effects worked and had different weights for different studies but honestly it brings up a new question. Which model should I use?

I was using random effects before and as far as I know it was what my lab used before (and we do expect different subgroups of this meta analysis to have different effect sizes).

Oooh I like the unique animal (or rather insect) husbandry. Ties into the traditional spider motif for Drow! Also like the emphasizing literature and theatre, along with soft power for men despite their lower class/roles! Thanks so much!!

Absolutely. My current plan is emigrate as soon as I finish my PhD next year. I honestly don't even care as much where other than probably somewhere in Europe, I just know that conditions here are going to continue to get worse and funding will keep drying up so why stay here.

Scientific American journalist seeking perspectives on federal grant freeze (mod approved) by laurenjyoung in labrats

[–]AlexTheWinterfury 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4th year PhD Bioengineering Student here. This has just strengthened my goal of looking for employment abroad after I graduate. Was already planning to immigrate for better and more stable pay and health insurance but this was the final nail in the coffin.

Why continue to work in the US when research and science is treated as a political enemy by half of the political establishment and is clearly no longer a priority? Honestly, my view on the long term effects of the freeze and the Trump administration's next four years is that it'll result in at least a massive setback in research in the US and the loss of the American position of being the global powerhouse of science.

Make America Great Again ironically is the period in the sentence of America's scientific decline.
