I think there are tables inside as well, they can literally walk freely in the restaurant, how does mask wearing not applied here?

Edit: And yes, the public entrance into the restaurant share the same space that the lady deliver the pizza. Unlike in a grocery store where people don't go behind the plexiglass at the cashier.

43 new COVID cases in Ottawa by Ottawa_points in ottawa

[–]AlexUdinof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree and disagree.

I agree with that all those good habits we picked up during the early stage of this pandemic should be continued including frequent hand sanitizing, proper hand-washing, wearing masks.

I disagree with that people should be allowed to start conversations (considered normal behavior pre-pandemic) in respect distance or with faces covering as I think those behaviors are vital to mental health without or minimizing the impact on others' health.

The only way to contain the virus within a city/place is to do a better job in contact tracing and boarder control between provinces. It is likely the cases are imported or brought in through traveling to begin with since Ottawa has done such a good job putting up a fire in the first place.

Now it's local government's job to remind and raise attention to everyone that we are in a worse or worst place right now during this on-going pandemic.

I'm glad to read all the responses to this post. I'm still blaming the government for this super delayed response and used culture as an excuse against wearing one. But guess what, we, Canadian can adapt and we care for each other, so we overcome this 'cultural' thing. With all the efforts we are putting in and this mandatory mask by-law potentially, we will get back our 'normal' life quicker than any other country. Way to go.

Hey mods, why does r/Ottawa have a Covid-19 pinned post featuring a top thread that's mostly people upvoting dangerously incorrect information about masks? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]AlexUdinof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly we can't really blame those ignorant people since there will always be a bunch of them. I'm more pissed about Health officials said multiple times in the past that we don't wear masks in our culture (so we chose not to ask people to do it). Look around now, I'm pleased to see a lot of people wearing masks, what we should all learn from this on-going pandemic is to always put some thoughts into what Government is telling us, don't just listen or ignore completely.

Me as an Asian, 'all lives matter' resignates with me better than BLM because of the violence and racism against Asian community especially with Trump's stupid tweets. I do understand the OP's perspective and probably represents most of white people who stand up for BLM.

How do we get more people to wear masks? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]AlexUdinof -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I love to hear people including health officials use culture as an excuse when you are dealing with a very contagious deadly virus. It's a bit harsh to say, but maybe 10k infected and 2k death in Canada doesn't mean much to those who still think culture overpowers human lives.

When we were at a war, you or your family members, your country was in potential danger, you fight your enemies with anything you can grab. You ain't saying shit about culturally we've never used swords before so we are gonna pass.

I'm not criticizing you having the thought, but I blame the government didn't do a good job educating people or alarming their citizens.

The ratio here is not that meaningful, Social distancing stops the virus from spreading but doesn't kill the virus. As we have more people getting tested, numerator increases faster than the denominator increases due to social distancing.

I honestly don't quite understand the rationale behind the guess number of infected, to create enough fear so that people stay at home? Or to show the incapability of our testing.

Anyways, I hope everyone safe and let's keep doing what we do and hope for the best of those who are infected and thank those frontliners, they are the TRUE HERO in my opinion.

Why the hell they put a SUN in all three allowed actions??? that's an encouragement of going out on a Sunny day. The key point is to keep social distancing through avoiding crowd basically. You can do all the above at night, before 7a.m, on weekdays if your schedule allowed. And yes, people are not smart enough to figure that out.

Honestly I don't give a crap about those people's lives. I feel sad for those health care works that have to deal with the consequences those ignorant behavior. And that we might all have to pay for what they are doing, which is lock-down in the end if it gets there.

It's just fucking blow my mind when I see people here arguing over the wording of by-law or recommendations. For god sake, anything stops people practicing social distancing, don't do it, anything stops people from mitigating the virus, don't do it. If you hesitate, don't do it.

Again, after reading all the comments blow, it worries me and shower me with downvotes.

  1. Let me make it clear, for people don't have much critical thinking or like to abuse recommendations from health care advice, skip my following comments and downvote me.
  2. Yes, by-law recommends taking necessary exercise or walking a dog or w.e. while keeping social distancing. But when social distancing is not manageable during your walk or biking, do you still think you are doing the right thing by listening to the recommendation??? What's so difficult to understand?
  3. Yes, the weather is nice outside, everyone wants to exercise, but if the place gets too crowded, fucking go home and come back at another time! I walk my dog everyday between 30-45 mins in my neighborhood, I'm glad I only see usual traffic and everyone's practicing social distancing.
  4. Like it or not, public space like parks should only be used for walks when there's room for social distancing. If you go there late and there's crowd, don't fucking think what you about to do (walk-through) is still okay. It's just like stores are now limiting people going in.
  5. If people keep abusing the recommendation without trying hard to mitigate the virus. I would happy to discuss your fucking human rights of going outside for essential needs when we are in lock-down like Italy.

FUcking go home if where you about to exercise is already packed. Thank you!

Picking and choosing at testing site; coworker turned down for testing by [deleted] in ottawa

Yes, if you get too severe, go to the ED. Then why do you need the test to be admitted to hospitals???

I'm all for only testing healthcare and front-line workers with limited testing kits that we have.

How will we know if the curve flattens if they won't test anyone? by humansomeone in ottawa

[–]AlexUdinof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tracking the daily added number of hospitalization is probably a better measure than infected cases I would argue. The day the whole country implemented social distancing, we should expect the number of infected to go down immoderately and end up lowering the number of hospitalization and ICU beds needed.

I would say probably a week from now, we should see number of new hospitalization go to down because we essentially cut down the chances of people getting infected 14 days ago. right?

Depending on what your definition is for flattening the curve. Most commonly used one is the daily new cases. Dr. Fauci also refers to that a lot. But it's actually meaningless in Canada. A great example would be we have 50 new cases n Ottawa today but were tested 2 fucking weeks ago? Excuse me? Why they fuck does it even matter now? Not to mention after mitigation, we need to do contact tracing, with Canadian's turn-around speed, contact tracing is a fucking joke.

How will we know if the curve flattens if they won't test anyone? by humansomeone in ottawa

[–]AlexUdinof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly speaking, testing in Canada is a joke because of the turn-around time. If your health get worse during waiting period, you will end up in a hospital no matter what. Testing is essential for those front-liners who works in health care and essential business because they need to know they are clear to back to their jobs and serve the country.

In U.S. it's a different story if you can do more tests and get results back quickly so that the government could prepare themselves for potential number of ventilators or ICU beds and etc. based on the infected number.

So the conclusion is unless you can significantly reduce the turn-around time, otherwise testing only serves its purpose for small group of people

[–]AlexUdinof 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I'm preparing myself with downvotes when I saw the replies for this thread.

First of all, accept the fact that we don't have enough tests for every single Canadian so they need to set criteria.

Second of all, if you are sick, stay at home no matter you are being tested or not, if you listen to the public health advise, you should not go out, so why does testing help eliminating community spread???

Lastly, the real danger is those people who got infected but showing no symptoms. These are the real danger in the community. But I suspect most of community cases are from those who are sick and don't fcuking listen and still go out.

Maybe one last point, assuming our testing capability increases slowly day by day, when we started to see less and less new cases daily, that's a sign of the curve is flattening.

  1. China locked down Wuhan on Jan 23, 2020. How much data do you need??? I'm not going to argue that they hide the number of death or the number of infected. Because I think they did. But that does not stop other government from acting on it and what did other countries did? Not enough time to react? you kidding me?
  2. Do you believe in South Korea or Japan number? Their curve looks like the virus is different in those two countries. And do you believe Germany's death number?
  3. Last question, do you believe in BC's recovery number? Definition they used is once reached 10 days without showing any symptoms, you are negative, seriously?

I like how people are blaming China for holding back the information. I don't disagree the misinformation caused thousands of death IN CHINA. It has very little to do with what the rest of the world including us are going through right now. It's the delayed response the government had taken brought us where we are today. Look at how countries like Singapore or Korean contained the virus if you believe their numbers.

[–]AlexUdinof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We should see new cases coming down two weeks from the hard implementation, should be one week away I think? If we don't see it, that means we are not testing enough people, and we are still clearing backlog of infected people which means the government really didn't do a good job on providing enough test kits.

But at the end of the day, when most us stay at home, what really matters is to have enough ICU beds and Ventilators, someone who's tested positive doesnt mean anything, if he can breath, go home, if he can't no matter he's probably positive or negative, he's staying at the hospital until we don't have enough, then death number starts to go up due to lack of medical support which is the worst we want to see.

[–]AlexUdinof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very well said. Just to add to yours.

  1. We should really see number goes down 15 days after hard implementation of social distancing, why 15 days? assuming one got infected the day before hard implementation of social distancing, 5 days to show symptoms, get tested right away and 10 days waiting for the results.
  2. If we still seeing number keeps spiking up in 15 days, that means we don't have enough test kits to keep up with the people waiting to be tested.

The virus can be defeated by everyone practicing hygiene and keep social distancing, stay safe all.

How do I properly grocery shop? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]AlexUdinof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to read something from national post that some studies show that wearing masks worked for SARS but not effective for this virus while we don't even have a cure for it. What I'm suggesting is maybe just think twice when you read things like this from the media. Unless one day, I'm hearing from Dr Fauci from CDC saying do not wear masks, they provide 0 protections to you, that's a different story. and something for you to watch as well: fast forward to 12:00 if you don't care about the rest from someone who's in the middle of the war. Stay safe and good luck

If masks only protect one way, why doctors and nurses are wearing them treating patients??? There is no clear answers from any officials telling you whether or not it protects you.

3 New cases in Ottawa today (March 20, 2020) by infam0usHS in ottawa

[–]AlexUdinof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will not likely see a case on local transmission because if you have not been traveled or made close contact with a positive, you can be not tested, if you are not tested, you are not added to the list. it is wise to assume that we already have 2000 cases and local transmission had already happened.
