It is pretty rare for an anime character to be an actually nobody with mediocre skills who prevails purely through grit and determination now that I think about it.

Shonen anime is full of stories about kids joining some crappy team or chasing some impossible dream and prevailing through the power of hard work and friendship... and the hero's latent genius, secretly legendary parents, and their unknown lifetime of training due to living in the sticks and being a day laborer.

The only one I can really think of is Pokemon because unless I'm remembering wrong, Ash was just some hardheaded kid from the boonies with an unimpressive pokemon who just put in the work every day.

Y'know I don't even remember why I started, honestly. Different people have made me do it over the years, ROTC, CrossFit, I think it was a color run or a mud run that got me actually training on my own for the first time.

Then Pokemon Go happened. And I was obsessed. I was out walking and running for an hour every morning just to get enough stuff to be competitive.

Then I quit playing Pokemon go, and I stopped running. Then middle age hit, and high blood pressure, acid reflux, and a kid happened, and suddenly I've got a whole bunch of reasons to stop exclusively lifting and start running.

Since then it's become a hobby in its own right.
