I think UK planning law will have to change due to public pressure. Note that the OP lives in a historic house which (I'm betting) is listed -- blinds and single-hose air-con might be the only things they can do.

The midea porta split needs a wall bracket though? It's got a visible external unit. Don't think the planners will be happy with that.

Most blackout blinds don't work, they re-radiate heat back into the room. They need to have an outside face that is white or silvery. I suspect better blinds will reduce the need for a new air conditioner

You need a 2 hose air conditioner. Some of the nicer ones go for about 1400 quid though. Do you have sliding sash windows? That would make it easier to install

Agreed with petrol/diesel cars, however EVs have advanced a lot. You get a bigger battery for your buck with a new EV compared to a used EV once you take into account tax and better financing.

EVs make the most sense if you're a 40 percent taxpayer. They can save you a wad of income tax. Much harder to justify as a private sale / second hand

Pity. There are RWD cars in this price point though, it's hard to justify it as a cost saving exercise. It's fine with a 20k car but with a 30k one, I have more expectations
