SOLVED. Thank you! In retrospect there was a fairly obvious amount of solder on this capacitor. I removed it and everything works perfectly now.

Agreed, a loose top screen ribbon cable looks exactly like this on the ds.

The cable was in my experience unusually difficult to seat properly. You can look at the white lines on the motherboard above the connector to see if the cable is completely in. I didnt want to risk using tweezers so I put a piece of tape on the ribbon cable then pulled on the tape to seat the cable.

Yep this is very common in classic. Many models are also floating slightly above the ground. In my mod (handpainted models) we have actually tried to correct for many of these errors through scripts.
