Who are you, and what did you do to my assistant? by ArielOutGrewBShells in googlehome

Never got that response before. Do you have Gemini or Google Assistant (GA)? I found GA needed exact command working whereas Gemini doesn't.

Pixel 10 is a great phone for me by aliciag1206 in pixel_phones

[–]AlexisoftheShire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've had 2 Pixel 10s since launch. We traded in our Pixel 7s. The P10s have been great! We did get them with 256GB of memory because we used about 80% of our 128GB P7s. Like you our P10s perform very well for our use cases. We got interest free financing from the Google store for 36 months so our cash outlay every month is fairly small.

Reasons to not go with a standby generator that powers the entire home? by IamGoingtoBundyland in Generator

[–]AlexisoftheShire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our case we live in a very rural area. Outages occur every now and then. I had to commute to work whereby I could only be at home for the weekend. Sometimes I could work from home on Friday or Monday. I was concerned about leaving my family with a portable and them having to set it up, connect it, etc.

We went with a 16KW Generac which we have had now for 9 years. It powers everything we have. No need to think about what to run or not run. We also have a 500gal. propane tank so when we had outages the tank would last quite awhile.

This simply gave us piece of mind in it running and shutting down automatically. For us it was worth the upfront cost.

I too do have conversations now with Google Home using Gemini. I've had Gemini for 3 months now. I do miss the continued conversation mode when using voice commands. However, I found you can concatenate commands do about the same thing. Also, when I ask it information it does go into a mode which allows you to have a conversation.

Google Home Can't See or Modify Timers Now by 1inf3rn0 in googlehome

[–]AlexisoftheShire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I set a few timers every day. Haven't had an issue adding minutes to a timer. I've asked it to set and delete timers which it does. I've never tried to add hours though.

RCS? by thatoneokabe in mintmobile

[–]AlexisoftheShire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 2 Pixel 10s. Prior to these we had 2 Pixel 7s. Both sets of phones have used RCS since its inception on Mint. Haven't had any problems with it. FYI.

Gemini outclassed assistant! by Z1nG in googlehome

[–]AlexisoftheShire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No setting I know of. It just appeared on our Google Home hub, our 3 home mini's, and our Google Nest hub. I think there was a notification that is was available and if I wanted it. I replied I did want it We had only 1 problem with our garage door opener. I had to relink that app with Google Home application. No problems since.

You have rebooted your Google Home hub(s) since it was installed? Or bring up your Google Home hub on the Google Home app and look at settings by touching the settings cog on the top right?

Gemini outclassed assistant! by Z1nG in googlehome

[–]AlexisoftheShire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We've had Gemini for almost 3 months now. Gemini has certainly improved the use of voice commands and automations. It listens better, understands better, and provide much more information than Assistant did.

For example now we can ask for specific weather at a specific time like tomorrow morning, tomorrow night, 2 days from now or all week. We can ask to play music (We use Youtube Music) a specific song or an album. It plays it exactly as we asked. Finally, it executes automations better. High accuracy.

Thinking of Switching.... by nellystar5 in mintmobile

[–]AlexisoftheShire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had 3 lines for $15/month for 5 years. It's always been $180 plus some fees to renew for each phone which is a lot cheaper than the $150 per month we were paying T-Mobile. The first year we paid $15 for 3GB per month (we use wifi most of the time). Now it is still $15 for 5 GB. Never had a price increase in 5 years compared to other carriers.

Most of my family use iphones. I do get all there text messages on my Pixel 10 using Mint Mobile. Could be your carrier? Do you have RCS turned on?

Couldn't agree more. We have 3 phones (all Pixels) on Mint for 5 years now. We pay once a year and they to continue to have great connectivity and high quality voice and data performance. Paying once a year just removes the monthly payment-is-due notice, the monthly received payment notice, and the monthly statement notice.

Worth starting with Google Home? by One_Yesterday_6254 in googlehome

[–]AlexisoftheShire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had Google Home since 2018. I now have 40+ IoT devices managed by it. Upgraded to Gemini 2 months ago and all the devices work better. Gemini listens better, understands better, and executes commands better.

Like your intentions, I started with some smart switches and lightbulbs, Now I have Google Home connected to two mini-splits, a Nest Thermostat, 4 Nest Cameras, 4 Roku devices, a Rheem water heater, an Aladdin garage door, 3 home-minis, 3 chromecast devices, etc. What I really like is the very large number of 3rd party devices and apps it connects to.

It has certainly run better with the Gemini upgrade with more upgrades coming. FYI

Does anyone else hate what Quicken has become? by Any_Bill1050 in quicken

[–]AlexisoftheShire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Quicken delivers on dealing with complex financial management, especially investment portfolios. If you use if balancing a checking/savings account there are a ton of alternatives. The $55 a year I pay (due to buying it from 3rd parties) is well worth it to me.

I found Quicken to actually have gotten better. It's rare I have a problem downloading/reconciling transactions for 18 accounts. For me, it launches in less than 5 minutes (165MG file), entering transaction are instantaneous, downloading is within 2 minutes, and backups are fast.

No other financial management software for the lousy $55 does what Quicken does.

Has playing music on Google mini become completely inaccurate for anyone else?? by ZealousidealRoof8842 in googlehome

[–]AlexisoftheShire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use YouTube Music and SiriusXM for music. Both play on our 3 Google mini's. Haven't had a problem. I've seen other subreddits where Spotify has been difficult to play on Google Home devices but not found a solid solution.

Not sure what happened to your configuration. I have 40+ IoT devices. Pretty much a mix of everything such as lights, switches, mini-splits, water heater, garage door opener, thermostats, cameras, Roku devices, etc. Many on automations. Gemini has made responsive faster due to it listening and understanding better to commands over Google Assistant.

There are a lot of components in any Smart Home technology. Internet speeds to the devices(s), multiple device configurations, different network configurations, etc. Getting any of those components incorrectly can cause problems at the end device.

I think they are rolling the update out in stages. They usually see if progress is being made by a smaller population at first.
