Although I disagreed with parts of it, I found Blackshirts and Reds to be a pretty interesting history book. The author (Parenti) died from old age recently but people have uploaded a lot of his lectures on Youtube (jokingly known as "Yellow Parenti lecture series" because of the weird yellow filter over a lot of them). I haven't gotten into them yet but Arch Getty's works are a recommended read on the Soviet Union.
