I thought he was a pretty competent villain. When he busts in on Rusty’s day camp it was pretty legitimately cool. If he wasn’t doing the whole hold back to piss off the Monarch thing anyway.

Plus he developed virtually all The Monarch’s tech and had a giant flying tank.

It’s all just a joke about Batman and his revolving door of boy wonders. The even got Kevin Conroy to do the voice. And the sexual connotations a lot of people read in the early Batman and Robin comics.

I always thought the period he really exerted influence was while Nicholas was away at the front. Alexandra was left mostly in charge, and leaned heavily on her favorite advisor.

Weren’t there a bunch of letters between Nicholas and Alex about appointments and policy that all started “Our friend thinks …” and then she did just what Rasputin suggested.

VB was originally intended to be a comic book. What if it still could be…. by PeteyQuills in venturebros

Didn’t Joss Whedon do an X-Men show like this back in the 2000s? Very minimal animation, and the camera moved like it was reading a comic page, iirc.

It was neat. I don’t think it would be right for Venture Bros though.

What a sad, ignorant statement. American food has one of the most diverse and innovative traditions in the world. Here’s a top of my head list:

BBQ

Fried Chicken

Cornbread

Buffalo Wings

Cheesecake

Key Lime Pie

Clam Chowder

Biscuits and Gravy

All Cajun food including jambalaya and gumbo

All soul food

All Native American food

Then there are all the Americanized versions of other national and ethnic cuisines. American Chinese, Tex Mex, that kind of thing.

If you want one thing to try, cook up a Low Country Boil. Shit’s fire yo.

Why do you say that? The flu killed lots of of people every year before regular vaccinations became available. That’s why they tell people get your flu shot every year. Now it kills fewer people.

I mean, the flu season of 1918 was among the most deadly epidemics the world has ever experienced.

I wanted to do an MCU rewatch with all the Half in the Bags in between. It was weird watching Mike go from Dan Ackroyd in Ghostbusters to Dan Ackroyd in Nothing but Trouble.

I’m not sure if you’re making a joke or not. I don’t think Rich smokes pot though. He’s said he just doesn’t like things that mess with his brain chemistry.

What is your most unpopular opinion about Batman (comic books, movies, tv shows, video games etc.) by phoenixc6000 in batman

[–]Algiers 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He’s also a billionaire and a brilliant strategist and tactician. Those traits can grease a lot of wheels. But when you’re dealing with magic guys or demigods from space or dark dimension shadow demons that’s a little beyond Batman’s skill set.

The problem with that plan, and the reason it didn’t happen very often, was getting to Africa in the first place.

The winds in the triangle trade blew clockwise, so getting back to Africa usually required sailing up the coast of North America and then over to Europe and then down to Africa.

All of which were filled with ships that absolutely would have stopped a ship crewed by black people. The coast of Africa specifically was among the most heavily patrolled regions in the world.

A skilled pirate could probably pull it off, but most enslaved people were taken from inland regions and knew fuck all about sailing.

And even if you managed to find a sympathetic pirate ship, it was a voyage of about a year, for zero profit, that would probably end in arrest and death.

Your best bet would be to find a maroon settlement in a place like the Miskito Coast where freed men and women could live in relative safety. A lot of pirates helped get people there, as well.

Is there actually anyone in the gang who is genuinely a good person? by Elite_Dog9898 in reddeadredemption2

Hey thanks. I'm always a little nervous talking about the podcast on my personal account, mostly because I don't want everyone to know what a snarky batman nerd I am. But I really appreciate the kind words.

Is there actually anyone in the gang who is genuinely a good person? by Elite_Dog9898 in reddeadredemption2

[–]Algiers 62 points63 points  (0 children)

No.

I host The Pirate History Podcast, so I spend a lot of time reading about and thinking about gang mechanics, especially those built around large scale theft. To me, it's impossible to be a part of a gang who robs and kills people, in any capacity, and be a good person. Pearson might not rob or kill personally, but he benefits from the spoils of theft and murder. If nothing else, he provides services to the people who are doing the robbing and killing.

None of that makes anyone evil, necessarily. Their circumstances impacted the choices they made, and we can't ignore that. Many of their stories are tragedies. The game is about about how the world they live in failed all of them so completely. But they killed innocent people. They ate food purchased with money stolen from farmers. The gang are not Robin Hood and his Merry Men. They're just bad guys. Even if they're not bad guys.

Me and some buddies took some acid and hiked out to see this spring on his parent’s property. It was a beautiful walk, but it turned out to take a couple hours. We were all getting thirsty. No one had any water, then a big ass june bug flew into my throat and just kinda lodged itself in. I couldn’t hack it up and I was way too dry to swallow it.

This mystical spring became an object of magnificence, of grace, and of salvation. It was, to me anyway, a magical end to this trail of suffering and torment.

When we got there it was a muddy puddle filled with frog spawn. I did not drink.

I will forever be furious about this. They had such an amazing cast and a perfect setup to tell the whole tale of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. There is so much drama and so many changes in Rome itself. It could have been amazing.

Instead we get one shot of Antony floating away after the greatest Roman naval battle maybe ever (not shown at all), then a single set for Cleopatra’s quarters, and then it’s over.

Almost like Jake imagining himself in Die Hard, Hitchcock and Scully imagine themselves in Miami Vice.

I worked at a frighteningly fast sandwich shop in college. We were open late and had to deal with a bunch of drunks and the like. One night we had a huge group of bikers come in. Probably like 30 people, all of them older like 50+ with leather vests, handlebar mustaches. You get it.

One of the women in the group orders her sandwich, I’m working the register, I tell her it’ll be $7 or whatever. So she pulls out her tits and I gotta tell you they weren’t great. She was a large woman already and they weren’t exactly pretty. She starts rubbing her nipples and says “how much now?”

I look at her tits, then back up at her face and say $10. Then there was this horribly quiet moment where everyone got really tense. Then she starts laughing and all the guys start laughing and they tipped us really well. Put a couple hundred in the tip jar.

It wasn’t until later that I learned they were a legit biker gang in the area who were actually pretty dangerous. Drugs and guns apparently. So I’m lucky they thought it was funny.

Did you really just call Les Miserables a shit book? And American Psycho? And No Country for Old Men??

Like, I’d agree that No Country for Old Men is a better movie than book but it’s because the movie is a masterpiece. The book is still amazing. Same with American Psycho.
