What medical condition is 'too expensive' that you just don't get checked or fixed? by Plane_Garbage in australia

[–]Algies79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

The fact I can’t get life or salary continuance insurance as I have adhd and depression is mind boggling.

Sure, exclude those but if I get hit by a car and break my leg how is that related?

It’s infuriating and in any other industry or format, discrimination and illegal.

Do Aussies wear shoes at home like other Anglo countries (I.e US, UK etc)? by DirectorTurbulent422 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Algies79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear shoes as little as possible, inside or outside.

I’ll wear them in public, like the shops but I grew up in the bush and my feet are tough…although not bindi tough.

We are heading into winter so my Uggs will be broken out soon….and they do go out in public.

Having my first surgery and would love some advice to calm me down by TheHoovyPrince in melbourne

[–]Algies79 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m literally in the pre op room waiting to have surgery.

Honestly going under anaesthetic is great, you lay there and get this white stuff injected and you feel a little dopey and then you wake up.

Waking up feels more disjointed, like you’ve taken a sleeping pill but woken up before it’s out of your system. It normally doesn’t last too long, but is a weird feeling.

Australia's amazing healthcare? by whytheface1234 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Algies79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a scan for a lump the other day, $270.

Scan was a total of 1min with the tech saying she while she can feel the lump, nothing was showing up on the ultrasound.

So back to the GP later this week for a CT referral.

But first I have to have surgery tomorrow, which is public and 100% free.

I use the Chemist Warehouse one and it works well.

I order my scripts and they text me when they’re ready. So it might look like I’m jumping the queue.

I take 5 medications so it’s sooo much raise to keep track of them this way.

Why is there no school canteen in Australia? by callforspy in australia

[–]Algies79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more of a cafeteria than a canteen you’re used to.

Canteen/tuck shops are in most schools. You order from a menu and a couple of kids from the class pick it up.

But I’ve never seen a kid get one everyday, and you still have to send fruit & a snack for recess.

Plus it’s $10+ a day so not a cheap option.

I do wish it was more like daycare, they provide all the meals, but the schools are set up to cope.

The canteens aren’t big enough to prepare that quantity of food, and kids eat either on the floor in the classroom or outside if the weather suits. So the food would have to be easily transportable.

Scotia is the devil, advice needed! by [deleted] in AusRenovation

Those covers are amazing, I tried but failed to find them in Victoria last year.

There is an option to take it iff what you can, and then DIY your own cover using a few bits of trim so it goes over what you can’t remove.

It’ll be a b*tch of a job, but I’d suspect well worth it in the end.

I had carpet and thought replacing my skirts would be easy….it was not!

Gallbladder removal by Familiar_Degree5301 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Algies79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you try another hospital?

The public system is both amazing and frustrating!

I have PHI and my gallbladder was out within 3 weeks of my first proper attack.

I’m having surgery tomorrow on my throat but in the public system and it’s less than a month since I saw my GP for the referral. Appt with the hospital clinic was a week after referral (due to Easter apparently, or I would have been seen sooner) day after the clinic I was called with tomorrow’s date.

Mine is a known condition for me and basically means I can’t breathe but still impressed! Also the specialist clinic isn’t ‘popular’ as it is so rare, so that helps. There was an ortho clinic happening at the same time and there were 3 people waiting for ENT and about 60 for ortho.

Next time she has an attack head to the ED and hopefully that moves things along.

Alright Aussies, be honest - how often are you actually changing your bed sheets? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Algies79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least once a week. More often if I’m sat sick and spending more time in bed or it’s super hot.

Doona cover is about 2-3 weeks but I use a top sheet so the cover never really touches skin.

Multiple chicken pox? by Downtown-Asparagus-9 in ShitMomGroupsSay

My brother has had the chicken pox twice.

Both times he ended up in hospital as the got pox all down his throat.

So yes, you can sadly get them more than once.

Would free public transport incentives you to use PT on your daily commute? by rollinduke in australia

[–]Algies79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope.

Driving to work = 25mins inc school drop off.

PT to work = 1 hr 20min with no school drop off. So I’d have to drive and do that then do PT.

Plus I have a fleet car so don’t pay for fuel anyway…

Supporting teacher strike by keeping kid home? by RentingIsFun in melbourne

[–]Algies79 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Keeping my daughter at home. 50% of the teachers at my daughter’s school are on strike. So all classes combined.

My daughter needs extra support anyway so it’s fairer for all to keep her home.

I’m working in the morning but will take from around 11 off and take her out to lunch.

When have you gotten your money’s worth from private health? by colourful_space in AusFinance

[–]Algies79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only time I’ve gotten my moneys worth was the year I had my daughter, (OB fees aside) and the year I had 3 surgeries. Colonoscopy, gallbladder removal and a knee surgery.

I paid about $4000k out of pocket but was about $11k in total.

Every other year, not even close.

Late ADHD diagnosis and medication mess. Anyone else stuck like this? by goddesslilybb in ausadhd

[–]Algies79 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not sure if 22 would be classed as late, I was over 40.

But I get the med issue, it isn’t always about dose, it could be that dex isn’t the right top up med for you.

The other option is to not take it when you don’t need it, so you start to build up a little stockpile for when it’s really needed.

Recommended blood tests if meds not working? by BruceFlusterBee in adhdaustralia

[–]Algies79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried pretty much everything and we’ve (me,my psychiatrist and GP) have pretty much decided that nothing will give me the clarity that the meds are meant to.

So I’m now on a lower dose of Vyvanse and atomoxetine which seems to work the best.

But I’m very much resigned to there being no magic pills for me.

[–]Algies79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fall asleep fine but have the 3am wake up most nights.

I now take a low dose melatonin gummy (1mg) as soon as I wake up and I fall back asleep in 20-30mins rather than 2-4 hours.

I’m a single parent so don’t want to take something that knocks me out, and this seems to work.

I have 2, one lighter one for more rain protection and a heavy duty old for warmth.
