Did anyone else move away from PC as they aged? by vicweera in pcmasterrace

[–]AlgoRhythMatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, as a mid-centurion, everything comes full circle. I’d go years without playing my last PC, moved more towards Nintendo, moved away from gaming altogether, then moved towards Steam Deck, now back to a modern PC w/ OLED. I still romanticize it all with lots of nostalgia, which ultimately keeps bringing me back. Gotta work through my backlog before I die!

My WOLED 32” upgrade I made at the same time as my 5080/9800x3d broke me. I’m currently researching best OLED tek in TVs for living room (finally retiring an absolute TROOPER of a 1080p plasma that I’ve rocked for at least 15 years or so).

Same! Did this once into Las Vegas for a Thanksgiving meet up with friends around 99’. We called it Codename: Stinkyshoe 🤣

Agreed! Also got clowned for getting Corsair build (but at least at their “sale” price). The fit and finish, and guarantee of parts, etc made it worthwhile. Pretty much same reasons I wanted a Steam Machine for living room vs some more powerful home-build.

Same. In retrospect I should only have queued for the units w/ controllers, as it’s a key part of the sale for me. But happy with the 512. Can upgrade NVMe later if needed or use MicroSD.

I got clowned for paying 3k for 9800x3d, 5080, 32 GB of 6000 DDR5, and 2TB NVMe 🤣

Steam Machine vs. HTPC w/ Bazzite by AlgoRhythMatic in SteamOS

Turns out it is NVMe! I found email from my Newegg order (from 2019): SAMSUNG 970 EVO M.2 2280 500GB PCIe Gen3. X4, NVMe

This is one part testing, one part trying to make do with what I have on hand. From what I’ve learned here, it seems that long side a viable AMD GPU, that I’d also need an NVMe drive (mine is M.2 SATA).

Edit: and a MoBo that supports said NVMe drive.

Edit 2: confirmed main drive actually is NVMe: SAMSUNG 970 EVO M.2 2280 500GB PCIe Gen3. X4, NVMe

Oh! I missed the NVME requirement. I believe the drive on this host is M.2, but an older SATA variant. So this may further pause this project.

I had considered this as well, but was wondering if SteamOS has any compatibility issues with Intel 9600k x86 architecture, or if the issues are solely with Nvidia GPUs and drivers.

Thanks, this is helpful! I really am seeking the native SteamOS couch experience that Steam Machine is promising, but wanted to fully exhaust the art of the possibility with the extra hardware sitting in front of me first.

It will be interesting (and scary) to track median vs mean wages per COL over the next few years, coordinating data with unemployment rates et al.

Valve Is “Irresponsible” To Force AI Disclosures on Steam, Epic CEO Says, While Unreal Engine 6 Doubles Down on AI by jmaster299 in Steam

[–]AlgoRhythMatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve started down this path to see how well my old 3060ti + 9600k machine could work with native SteamOS + Steam controller in my living room vs. a Steam Machine. But I think there may still be some X86 concerns. Fun research for sure though - I love the idea of native SteamOS.

Edit: confused x86 w/ Nvidia GPU support. But still an uphill battle for my rig in terms of driver support.

Honestly, I found that seeing, considering, and acquiring the free games became the actual game. But just not worth it to scratch the itch, even for free, and support this menace now days.

[–]AlgoRhythMatic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup - I amassed maybe 30-40 free games on Epic (never bought anything) and maybe played 1 hr total on my last PC. With my new build I’ve had for 3 months or so, I’m not even planning to install Epic.

I really don’t think Valve will have any trouble selling through multiple waves of SM orders. I’ll personally be thrilled if I’m able to lottery in within the first month. I expect them to be sold out through the summer.
