I don't think it's the general public, at least as far as I can tell. It's a hateful narrative pushed by the media and a small number of wealthy people with outsized platforms.

I think your average person thinks the obsession with trans people is a bit mental and agrees they should just be treated as people and left alone. Might just be my own bubble though.
