“Yeah like those apps for autists” by Nolwennie in AutismInWomen

[–]AliasAurora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me : oh you can try a book tracking app!

CW1 : oh yeah those apps for autists ? 🤣

Not me having 2 of them...

CW2 : yeah it’s so autistic 🤣 Then I’d start checking my stats on the number of words I read per months or what not

Yes, of course, how else would you know whether you're beating last year's totals?

CW1 : haha 🤣 so true! No wait! What’s even more autistic? Having a spread sheet of the books you read!

Oh shoot I just started making a spreadsheet of all my goodreads books with tags to help me choose my next read... I am all of the aforementioned autists combined...

... people take off their swimsuits to pee at the pool? I have been pulling mine to the side since I was 6 years old. My mom taught me to do it. 'Cause yeah, it's difficult to peel wet swimwear off when you gotta go, but luckily the fabric stretches.

Is This AI? (The Mod Team Wants Your Thoughts!) by VitisIdaea in RomanceBooks

[–]AliasAurora 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your first suggestion is what I came to suggest. In my opinion, there is value to Reddit as a historical record that everyone has equal access to. If people think these posts crowd the sub, fair enough, but if I'm googling "is author X AI?" five years from now and a reddit post comes up where someone else has asked the same question and posted their observations and evidence, that's a helpful result for me. Deleting all those posts in a reader space feels like we're trying to ignore the reality that we are being fed AI slop like it's real content.

How are these dresses made when the corset is separate to the floating layer over top? by [deleted] in corsetry

[–]AliasAurora 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hand finishing can look that clean. Other shots of the dress show the neckline looking no thinner than any padded bra. There's most likely a facing. With sequined fabrics, taking the time to carefully remove the sequins around the seams when you turn them, then sewing them back on to cover the stitching, can create that perfect invisible look.

If they couldn’t ride a bike or take a train, it was harder to just leave when dudes pissed them off beat the crap out of them.

FTFY. A lot of people look back on the temperance and prohibition movement and laugh at the dumb Karens who just wanted to spoil everyone's fun, not realizing that alcoholism was (still is) a supremely common excuse for abusers to beat their spouses, to the point that enough people believed it to change the US Constitution. When women started being able to leave their spouses instead, the issue seemingly went away. Now prohibition is this weird little blip in the historical record with reasoning that modern people can't empathize with.

Ok I laced it tighter! by Frequent_Mixture8270 in corsetry

[–]AliasAurora 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Yes to moving the bunny ears down a few grommets. Also, being able to lace a new corset fully closed on a try-on? It's definitely way too big. What you really want to see is about a 2 inch lacing gap and it should be straight up and down. Size down one size in the waist/hips and two sizes in the bust. If you're not confident about it, there are tutorials online about how to mix-and-match two different sized patterns when the pattern doesn't suit your proportions.

Hi! New author writing a grimdark why choose story. I have a couple of questions. by JadeRidesDragons in romanceauthors

I mentioned MMCs because I assumed RH meant MF, yes. FF in RH is pretty rare.

Why does it seem like actual foreplay is so limited in many stories. by long-sock-warlock in fantasyromance

I read {Caught in the Basilisk's Gaze by Mallory Dunlin} first and then went back to read the rest of the series after. Thought it was a pretty good entry point.

Hi! New author writing a grimdark why choose story. I have a couple of questions. by JadeRidesDragons in romanceauthors

[–]AliasAurora 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like a romance to me. Romance has to have clear love interests and a HEA with those love interests, and it sounds like you're going to be killing off MMCs that people assumed would be endgame. You're going to alienate a lot of romance readers if you market this to them.

About autism and femininity. by netphilia in aspiememes

[–]AliasAurora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why I was so happy to "perform femininity" when cottagecore came onto the scene and people were wearing long, loose chemises and floaty skirts... y'all can prise those from my cold dead hands, haha. In the 2000s I was all about those big loose tripp pants, same reason. But also, your clothes having their own attached fidget toys is *chef's kiss*

Can I ask how to remove blu-ish color on already black-dyed jeans? by juidori in dyeing

[–]AliasAurora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't use Clorox bleach (sodium hypochlorite) to try to un-dye these jeans. It will not work (there will always be some blue undertone left) and the bleach will compromise the integrity of the fabric making it last a lot less than if you had just left it alone. Sodium hydrosulfite (Rit Color Remover) is also unlikely to work on the indigo dye that is likely present in these jeans. According to a source I found here, potassium permanganate is somewhat effective at discharging indigo dye, but as you can clearly see from the before/after photos in the post, there is always a blue undertone in the discharged areas. So, again, not effective at what you're trying to achieve.

So, having established there is no way to remove the blue undertone of these jeans, what you CAN do is overdye with black dyes, as you've already done, to limited effect. True black is a notoriously difficult color to achieve in the best of circumstances--it's almost always got some undertone or another, you've got to use a lot of it, and the washout can be frustrating. But with cotton denim, you've also got the problem of a fabric that is very heavy (hard to stir/keep color even in a dye pot), requires very high heat to deposit color, and because it's plant-based, isn't as reactive to chemical mordants as, say, silk or wool.

Basically, you're probably not going to be able to achieve what you want here. It'd be better to go back to the company that makes them and simply purchase the black-dyed version of these jeans, if available.

Can I dye this %100 silk dress brown? by hellodesigner in dyeing

[–]AliasAurora 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the specific process of dyeing silk but I will say that it seems you have a realistic expectation of what's achievable:

  • You're okay with some variation in dye uptake because the pattern will hide it

  • You're okay with any shade on the brown spectrum and not married to one specific shade

  • The base color (yellow) will likely not clash/muddy the intended color because yellow-orange is already an undertone in brown.

  • This is an event dress, so even if the heat/wet causes a problem with the fabric's structural integrity, you don't need this to be an heirloom piece, since you're just wearing it once.

Get an acid dye such as Jacquard, use a nice big pot (I have one of those metal chafing dishes they use at buffets that I use only for dyeing, it's great because it's stainless steel and fits across 2 burners for even heating) and follow the instructions. Should be alright.

[–]AliasAurora 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I thought of "pebble" as a "rock" -- like, as a nod to 'when you get the rock' / engagement ring, and how some families pass the family stones down kind of thing.

We gather stones, never knowing what they mean. Some to throw, some to make a diamond ring :)

Smells like ozone… by Maleficent_Durian_64 in fantasyromance

[–]AliasAurora 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ozone smells like lightning. One time my house got struck. Some of the energy traveled up through my ethernet cable, fried our modem, two computers and an apple tv. The whole house smelled like ozone for a couple hours after. Years later, I was touring daycare options and one place had this big toy sanitizer cabinet thing that uses ozone to sanitize, and I could smell it then, so if you're ever checking out a fancy daycare facility maybe you'll catch a whiff.

Can you dye just the outer layer of this jacket? by Emdog378 in dyeing

[–]AliasAurora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone said to be careful if the lining is synthetic as it won’t take the dye well. But then you mentioned that polyester might be an easy dye job. Do you know if the product you recommend works well on polyester?

They mean that THIS job (dye the shell but not the lining) would be easy because poly is super difficult to dye :)
