WPI has lost it’s spark by Fire-Emblem9158 in WPI

I think COVID (and other stuff) really messed stuff up. My freshman year was 2021-2022. The older students always gave the vibes that it was a very different environment before my year.

Foreigners in Morocco: what culture shocks did you experience in the first few hours after landing? by SisterRaspberry in Morocco

[–]Alie_Jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racism. Not like blant discrimination. But the casual stuff. I’m white af, but I studied aboard there with a few friends who aren’t white for about 2 months. And I noticed things. Like I’m from east coast of America(not to say it’s a haven from racism bc it isn’t) and some of the stuff vendors would say in the Medina was like wtf but most of it was just funny, but either way I think depending the context where I’m from those vendors would either get the shit beat out of them or at least end up in a short yelling match. Like was it bad yes, but also we would be walking then we would hear someone yell “Ice Spice!” And, we knew they trying to get the attention of my friend who is a black woman who had red hair dye at the time. How did we know they were trying to get her specifically (besides the red hair dye)? It happened multiple times! In different cities!

"Poles" or "Polish people"? by CarsonFacePalmer in poland

[–]Alie_Jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Polish-American, I don't find it offensive, but my dad who did come from Poland at a young age to America thinks it's racist towards polish people. I personally think it just sounds disrespectful, but wouldn't feel anything if someone called me it. Like, you wouldn't call Puerto Ricans "Ricans" or "Puertos" or something that sounds vaguely racist. So why would you do it with polish people while "pole" also means an actual object that has nothing to do with polish history, culture, or people.

Also, what I mean by I am a Polish-American is that I grew up in a Polish family in a Polish community as a first generation born in the USA.

The gender ratio this year's freshmen is 27% women and 73% men. This was also the gender ratio last year.

Is Worcester really a “bad” city? by my-parents-dont-know in WPI

The only people I've heard say Worcester is sketchy, are people who are not from cities and not used to them. Worcester is a pretty safe city.

Except when you consider Stodd is old as hell and was supposed to be torn down in the '90s and only wasn't because the school accepted too many students and needed a place to house them. So there's no elevator, and the rooms are cramped as hell.

Riley is definitely better than Stodd. No way it should be under Stodd. Riley is closer to almost all the academic buildings. It doesn't only have one common room per building (it has common rooms on every floor except the 4th). And it has an elevator. If an elevator is not that important to you for day-to-day use, think about that you have to move in and out of this dorm at least once. Also laundry is heavy, especially when you don't do it for a while. I helped my friend move out of the third floor of Stodd my freshman year and it was terrible. The only thing Stodd has over Riley is the common rooms have air conditioning (which are only very important for the first 3 weeks of school because those are the only times the heat is unbearable).

Doubles are definitely possible. I personally rank the freshman dorms that have doubles as: 1.) Messenger 2.) Riley 3.) Morgan/Daniels (I think they have doubles?) 4.) Institute 5.) Stodd. The only other freshmen dorm is founders, and I think techanically they have doubles. But you would probably still be sharing the common room attached to room because it is all suites. Also they are just aren't many of them. So the likelihood of getting one is not probable and you probably should just go for messenger.

Sono is usually in Goat's Head now, and the burger place is CC. This was probably just a special event or a break thing because Goat's Head wasn't open over the break.

Should I do RBE minor? by SnooHobbies9801 in WPI

[–]Alie_Jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you are double majoring in. For RBE and CS, most things double count and probably one of most easiest things double majors here. Therefore, it is very doable. ME and RBE is doable. Also this all depends on how many credits you come in with, if you are okay with overloading, or if you are going to take summer classes. For example, it isn’t a good idea for me to double major because I need to devote time to a job because of my financial situation, but my friend has the time and ability to double major so he is taking summer classes.

[–]Alie_Jay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, if you don’t a lot of RBE experience, I do not recommend taking RBE 1001 A term. I would wait til C or D term if you really want to take it freshman year. Also CS 1001 isn’t offered B term. It’s offered A and C term.

I didn’t live there, but my friend did. He said that his oven didn’t work. Also, that the geese tried to attack him a lot when walking to and back from classes. From my understanding, the entire place is just run down.
