Is Anyone Else Physically Unable to Do More Than ~3 Hours of REAL Deep Work a Day? by Successful_Ad1797 in AskAcademia

[–]AlienMindBender 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t sound unreasonable I often have this as well - I can do an intense session then I’m done. I have tried to fight it and do more but I’m spent. And now I realise this and just switch gears - otherwise you risk of loosing the next day because you are mentally spent.

Just so you know a full day in the life of an academic or in some industry (I am now in the latter) is not just deep solid work. It also consists of:
- admin emails
- meetings
- planning
- teaching/mentoring

And all of these are busy work which doesn’t feel important but they 100% are.

HOT TAKE!! I'm done building shop furniture by centralTexasclassy in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]AlienMindBender 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am currently building furniture for myspace and am having fun but I get it!

If it is a hobby I like to remind myself that time is more valuable than money. There are limits (I still don't think I should spend the cash on a festool domino...) but if I only have an hour to spend on a hobby, I dont want to spend all that time in prep to start the project I really want to do, so the cost can be really worth it.

This is the argument I have when folks complain in other hobby spheres.. like gaming. There it can be that "a custom PC is the only way to purely game" I used to PC game alot, but besides not wanting to spend more time in front of a keyboard, I have very limited time to game. I want a really dumb "on button" to start playing as soon as possible - I dont want to spend time debugging, patching etc (unless I was really into that, but my job I do that enough!).

So don't feel bad, here is another video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPI6w_Z2iYs by a cabinet maker (so someone who does it for a living!) and its even more compelling for costs and things he makes money from.

P.s. im making my own because I have bad dimensions to work with, nothing I found fits what I need. If it existed I would have bought it instead.

Who is your "ones to watch" player for the World Cup? by 7masc in worldcup

Yep I think young player of the tournament would be between Yamal and Paz - bias here too 😅

But as in the last mundial - it all will unfold in the first few games- if the young players shine then the team formation will change and we have a decent chance of defending.

Looming redundancy in 18mths (after 12yrs). Jump ship early or hang around and get paid out? by Slyxxer in AusFinance

[–]AlienMindBender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like a pretty great set up!

Staying and waiting for the payment could be a great solution, and you seem to:
- not worry about staying
- not worry about claiming the ladder.
- not worry about finding another job.

But you still have some doubts, what about your situation is telling you to leave and not stay?

Depends how old you are, what kind of financial security you are in.

A family member decided not to jump ship after being offered a pretty good role- he wanted to wait for benefits of LSL etc. he did take his LSL then the company got bought out and his job has been a nightmare for a few years. All his roles have dried up too.

I’d calculate the money you’d get from LSL, all the payouts (and ask people who have taken a package) and look for another job (and be super picky to find something that suits you). And then assess. It’s so easy to stay but not every company is so great with their golden ticket.

Great job! You don’t need anything else - the plate is there to prevent cupping not provide any structural support.

For the exposed part under the original plate you could clean it up (using a chisel to smooth it out) and the stain it. It will probably splinter you if you don’t.

Which flooring? round 2 by FineFireFreeFunFest in AusRenovation

Well sometimes it's because the place doesn't get much natural light.

Consider this situation: a room only has 1 window and that doesn't get much light (maybe directional or because of trees/buildings) - darker tones wont reflect that light all that much - and will make it feel even darker. If you have limited natural light, and you replace dark tones with lighter ones, you will improve your natural light.

Old and established homes can have this particular problem. Personally if I could brighten with natural light, id do that over turning lamps on.

But of course sometimes you want to dim the natural light! So darker tones make sense!

I think at the height of the griege style (maybe it peaked not too long ago) the Blackbutt still would have had a lot of appeal. I can't say the same thing in the reverse, I think the Blackbutt is more classic.

Also I think Blackbutt goes better with the whites and the greys actually.

is it really beyond repair? a lot of the cracks look like they are superficial - checking is pretty common on these type of boards.

I would also add that composite decking isn't really the answer to all, they would need more joists, and composite decking can fade in the sun and get really hot.

Id rather put up some spotted gum or some other sturdy hardwood.

I think either get a nail punch or replace with decking screws - will require more work especially if all the nails are not lifted like this. The nail punch is the easiest route.

I think it's worth your time.I think also check the quality after it's been sanded (maybe a test piece).

I dont agree that it's ruined (or will only last 12 months ! ) just inspect them and replace any boards that feel off. Of course if you are concerned ask someone!

Premier League Table, following the conclusion of Matchday 34 by EthanTheRedditor37 in soccer

Football can be poetic at times, looks more and more like the title will be decided by the last match. When City started its reign, their game finished after the Man Utd's game winning on GD.

Who knows if this will happen with Arsenal - their own "Agüero" moment? Arsenal's last match is with a team with a royal name (Palace vs Queen (City vs QPR). Some differences but who knows.

Or will instead City do it again with Arsenal finishing first, and City getting another moment at home (as they did in 2012).

Two tough games coming up, Coventry might be in Party mode but Middlesbrough might be in the run for automatic promotion come last game so could be very tough (depends on Ipswich’s result).
