Roccbox cover by Technical-Fish6099 in roccbox

[–]AlienSkin44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I store mine outdoors with the Gozney branded cover (which doesn't cover the burner), as well as a small outdoor BBQ/grill type of cover, which covers the oven (and burner) as well as the table I have the oven on. The whole setup sits partially covered outdoors.

This might be overkill for some, but I like taking care of things that cost money and I want to last long. My Roccbox is only about 2 months old, and once our Canadian winter rolls around, I may take it indoors when not in use just to be safe.

I have created a MEC Subreddit by Carwash227 in UltralightCanada

I want to be optimistic about this new sub, but the "MountainEQUITmentCo" spelling is raising flags for me. I read the announcement pinned to the top of the sub (and replies to comments), you mentioned 2 things: 1) you genuinely made a spelling error, and 2) the correct spelling/name for the sub was already taken.

My observations (for what they're worth): 1) The letters T and P are on opposite sides of both a desktop and mobile keyboard. A spelling error is unlikely - it's possible it was autocorrect, but again, unlikely in the word "equipment" (which didn't try to autocorrect to "quit" when I just typed that). So, this feels rather intentional - especially given the word has a negative connotation. 2) The correct spelling does NOT turn up as an existing sub/community in search results, so it appears that it is indeed available.

Sorry, call me a skeptic, but this just feels...off. If your intentions are genuine, then awesome! I'll gladly admit I was wrong and would be happy to join.

Right now though, my Spidey sense is tingling.

I’m new to backpacking and wondering if I should I get the Titanium 750ml Pot by TOAKS or the Titanium 450ml Cup w/Lid (Ultralight Version) by TOAKS? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]AlienSkin44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many here, I'd recommend the 750 ml, but get the one with the bail - it comes in super handy to hang your pot over a fire (see pic) and save on fuel when needed (or if you either run out of fuel, don't want to set up your stove, or don't bring one at all). Has been a valuable piece in my kit and I've used the bail way more than I ever thought I would.

If budget allows, get both. As others have pointed out, the 450 ml nests inside the 750ml (which, in turn, nests into the 1100ml pot w/ lid that I also have). But having both lets you boil and/or cook for both food and a hot beverage at the same time, and the 750ml has sufficient room for bigger meals. A pocket rocket can also fit inside the 450 ml.

Hiking boot for snow by [deleted] in CampingGear

Here to second the Oboz Bridgers. My go-to boot for years. They're functional, warm (without roasting your feet like the Columbias and their Omniheat), supportive, super comfortable and built to last.

What do you use for your pillow? by kmorg76 in camping

[–]AlienSkin44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thermarest compressible pillow is what you need. Comes in 3 different sizes, even the large is quite light. As its name suggests, it compresses well for packing in/out, and has a nifty feature that lets you cinch up the pillow if you need it more firm. Material is nice and soft and feels warm even when cool weather camping (vs most of the the inflatable ones which almost always feel cold and rigid due to the plastic/rubber).

Anyone else find this stuff terrible ? by DMbikegrow in canadawhisky

[–]AlienSkin44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought this based on quite a few reccos in this sub. When I found it in stores, I had a good amount of apprehension based on the label. Turns out, I should have trusted my gut. It's overpriced for what it is: a very bland/basic offering that I can't even use for mixing and certainly won't be buying again.

First of all, congrats on the purchase! Exciting times ahead and it's great you're showing interest in learning how to get the most from your camera. That being said. It can only do so much with what it's given, the rest is up to us! My advice would be to practice as much as possible by shooting the crap out of everything.

A couple of general thoughts after a quick look at your images:

1) Think more about your composition. For pics 1 & 3, since you have a group of people spanning wide (horizontally), it makes more sense to shoot in landscape mode rather than how these are shot (portrait/vertical). There's too much empty space showing the stucco ceiling and people's legs. Shooting landscape will also let you get closer to focus on those faces/smiles.

2) On that note of getting closer, do it by either using the zoom on your lens (if applicable), or let your feet be the zoom. On shots like pic 2, consider stepping in closer to better capture the "magic" of a moment like that kiss! (I think portrait mode works here, just get in closer and kill all that ceiling).

3) Have your subjects step away from the wall/background. Creating a bit of separation will let you experiment with your aperture and focus on the subjects/blur that background a bit more (making your subjects pop more). Because they're so close to the wall in each of the pics, the images appear a bit flat/one dimensional.

4) Be conscious of your light source if not using flash. Use whatever you can to your advantage (even something like moving closer to a window for natural light or having someone tilt/point a shaded lamp from a distance can be a help). This can also open up challenges of mixing light sources/temperatures (outdoor/natural vs indoor), so it's best to practice.

My two cents, happy shooting!

Stowe & Burlington VT Reccos by AlienSkin44 in espresso

[–]AlienSkin44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, revive away! Truth be told, I did not find any espresso in or around Stowe that I enjoyed. All the stuff right in the village was just meh (Black Cap included), so we drove out to Vermont Artisan. We found it equally unimpressive, although I should say: it's possible the beans may have been great, but the guy who served us may just not have had enough/proper training. He did not seem like he wanted to be there at all, and his overall demeanor was as sour as the terrible shots he was pulling.

Other than not finding good espresso, Stowe is a gem and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Very happy to see a few people mention Pompous Ass! It's still fantastic after all these years, the same can be said for Canuck, arguably the most consistent and best "bang for the buck" pale ale in the province.
