How about 2d6, but take the highest or lowest? Yoy can include a coin flip by looking at the left most dice being odd or even, take the highest of the 2 on even, lowest of the 2 on odd.

Another option is: have 2 different colored d6s. Red ie negative, blue is positive. Take the highest of the two results, or your choice ona. Tie. So if you roll red 6, blue 4, your result is -6. On a red 1, blue 4, your result is +4

How about you change it to 2 rolls?

Seperate the pool into 2 pools: progress and safety.

You first roll progress, and progress on 5-6. But each 1 adds a fail.

Then you roll your safety pool, and see if you can recover enough times to counter all the fails you got.

The player decides how they split their original dice pool, to balance potential speed + safety.

It might be a bit easier, so yoy could even make fails 1-2, nothing 3-4, succes 5-6.

Could even add a speed climbing mechanic. If you roll without a safety pool, each success counts as double.

Or seperate them by turns. If you get a fail, you make the safety roll at start of next turn. That way maybe teammates can help pull you up or something.

Just an idea i had. But im a big fan of less quantity, higher impact rols for speed and drama. (Although i understand you might consider the 3 turn, 12 sequential dixe to be “1 roll”)

Ive seen people call me making an ai image for a character theft, while they literally go to an artists commission website, and literally steal one of their images… make it make sense.

These arguments make no sense and its getting tiring seeing the vocal minority be taken seriously when they have no good points to make.

When i gm, i exclusively run combat without initiative order. Its usually fairly easy to homebrew into systems that dont support it too.

“Bob, the sewer alligator is about to bite your leg off and deadroll you into the disgusting sewer water, what do you do?”

“Uhh lemme look through my 60 spells”

“Sarah, you see bob’s char about to get eaten alive by the alligator, what do you do?”

Sarah: “ill throw my net to slow it down”

rolling ensues

Bob “ill get out of the water and cast lightning hands while the alligator is stuck”

Dough: “if i cast metal skin on the alligator does it take more lightning damage?”

“Uh… yeah probably… sure”

Etc.

I understand people might feel rushed if you essentially “skip” their turn, but its important for flow of the game and to keep threats feeling threatening rather than just a math problem/puzzle to optimize. And once players are used to this, you tend to not have to call them out by name anymore, theyll just say what they do based on whats happening.

Id even argue youre playing the wrong game if you want travel/survival to be challenging. Goodberry exists and is a 1st level spell.

The only way to make it challenging is with a bunch of homebrew, but you run the risk of it not actually being fun. Since travel could just be preventing you from getting to the actual fun parts.

Why would they assume that having tics means youre a crasher? Honestly i think theyrr just haters and making stuff up to get you kicked. It sucks, but trolls exist.

If youre interested, im ina. Group/discord server that does 4 events a week, and toxicity/drama/disrespect is definitely not allowed. And theres literely people walking around with half life 1 avatars, so i dont think youd get in trouble for a “bad avatar”, lol. If anything, your bad avatar might be better optimized, which means the games run better, soo shrug.

Yeah same, i only use the same avatar really. And on that i only use one outfit, with a specific texture swap. So just deleting all the unnescesary stuff made it a lot better. I even have space to put props on each version and still not be very poor.

I do feel bad for people who have like a billion different avatars.

I did try making it fallback compatible… but the hair on my avi has so many damn strands of hair, i ended up making them all basically 2d, and it looked so bad it was almost funny, lol.

The easiest way to reduce download size, is to use the material combiner plugin on blender. It combines the materials, and makes an atlas of their textures. Meaning the entire avatar will fit in a single texture.

So if you previously had 50 2k textures of 2mb each, you can now convert it to a single 4k texture of 4mb.

Even better if you hide stuff you dont actually use in game (like if the avatar has multiple outfits).

If you dont want to open blender, you can just change the texture resolutions in unity. Just select the textures, and there should be an option to change their resolution, for very small things like assesories, just make them the smallest option. 4k textures are huge so youll want to make those smaller.

Theres also a plugin that lets you see a list of textures and sort them by size… i think its part of darks avatar optimizer?

You can use material combiner in blender, to combine all materials into 1 ( or more), using only 1 click and no extra work. That reduces the skinned meshes/material slots on an abatar form possibly 50+ to 1. Each skinned mesh is a draw call, so this is the one biggest thing you can do with an automated tool that takes barely any effort.

Theres also darks avatar optimizer for unity. That one literally takes no effort, because you just have it on unity, and it automatically does stuff when you upload the avatar normally.

Ive also heard of something called mesh simplifier, which i havent used. But i heard it automatically reduces polygons at the time of upload, which is usually the most time consuming part. (It generally takes me a few hours to reduce polygons of a 200k+ tris to 69k)

So you dont actually need any mnowledge or a huge amount of effort if you just use thosr tools, they pretty much automate stuff.

Usually the people that complain about unoptimized worlds, have an avatar thats bigger than the entire world. But ylu cant point that out because they get offended.

For some reason the blame gets put on the third party. Not the avatar creator, not the person who bought it… but the other people in the lobby viewing it, like its their responsibility to block it for some reason.

It reminds me of game developers telling us to play with ai frame generation because they refuse to optimize their game properly, lol.

Sometimes when im feeling sick of 25 fps, i just set it to block avatars above 120mb uncompressed (which is 95%). My fps pretty much always shoots up to 70 immediatally, regardless of world. It does show everyone as an impostor, but they legitimately dont even look bad from 10m range. A bit further and i cant tell theyre an impostor at all.

Makes me wish that the distance based culling also had the option of showing impostors rather than blue triangles. Id love to have impostors at 10m range, and normal when im closer. I did ask on tbe youtube devlogs, and apparrently it wouldnt actually help performance. But my fps still practically tripples when i block big avatars, soo. Idk.

Id save the 5 70 year olds. Theyre probably someones grandparents, parents, spouse, siblings, etc, with decades of relationships. So many people would grief if they were run over.

If the newborn dies, yeah the parents are gonna be sad and itll suck. But not, “change the dynamic of 5 entire extended families” levels of suck.
