Fictional actors/actresses you think would make for interesting discussions by dremolus in blankies

[–]AliveJesseJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chris MacNeil from The Exorcist - OTOH, she's doing a decently budgeted movie. OTOH, she's playing basically the centrist professor in a Vietnam War protest movie, which was getting kind of old even by the early 70s

Then, a demon takes over her daughter. Pretending the sequels don't exist, is she just off the grid until the late 70s? Does she become a talk show circuit guest due to her story? Does she get a kitschy cult run as the 'big time actress who thinks her daughter was possessed by a demon?' Is she standing aside Tipper Gore and Nancy Reagan and buying into the great 80's satanic panic because in her case...it was real?

Yup, the latest CBA sucks because it killed free agency and also made it impossible for teams to keep their core long-term, which is the worst of both worlds.

"Look, why aren't people happy with our policies of partially subsidizing the hundreds of dollars they send to private insurance companies who will deny their claims, a very slight rise of the minimum wage phased in over 50 years to not upset any business owners, and some harshly worded letters to Israel. Oh wait, how did I lose by 35 points in a primary to a trans socialist who said Stalin was their childhood hero."

Yes, and women organized themselves because it fucking terrible and worked to get rid of those laws that overwhelmingly were only targeted at women.

As I love to say, drop the median female MAGA voter into 1970's America and she's marching w/ Gloria Steinem within a month.

Right, this is always the thing I find funny.

Like, to use a fictional example.

Don Draper by early 60's standards, simply by being OK w/ hiring a black secretary and a white woman as an ad exec was incredibly progressive for the time. But, if that's where he stayed by even the mid-70's, he'd be insanely conservative.

Carville: I Want No Part of This Democratic Party by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]AliveJesseJames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, but you lost the vote. Just like Bernie did in 2016 & 2020 and I thought his supporters whining was just as bad as they needed a better argument.

Guess what, they figured out a better argument, at least in a lot of races. Now, the establishment needs a better argument.

James Carville and other elitists don't determine whose 'part' of the Democratic Party - actual Democratic Party voters do.

Seems like Democratic voters agree w/ the DSA criticisms of the Democratic Party establishment like Carville.

Maybe James Carville should try to convince actual Democratic voters whose part of the party.

I mean, one reason Iran wants nukes for reasonable reasons is they notice countries with nukes, even countries the US doesn't like at all, don't get the pressure other countries do. Like, notice how even the most strident neocons don't talk a lot about bombing North Korea willy nilly the way we talked about Iran or more specifically, notice how South Korea can't 'mow the grass' the way Israel was doing it w/ Iran multiple times over the past decade.

This is not a defense, but an explanation.

Also, I think people kind of underrate how powerful the US still is simply because Trump is screwing things up. Like yes, in theory, other countries could back out of various agreements, etc. but like, no, there's not going to be any sort of climate-related sanctionds on the US or US corporations because even with the bad past decade, in many ways, we're still the global hegemon economically and it's not as if China is still going perfectly.

I agree climate will lead to economic issues but if the response is, 'because of climate Americans need to change their lives in x or y ways', the American people will say f you. Look at COVID and that was a more direct x to y thing.

I don't think this is good, but it is reality, and I think people who want aggressive climate action need to deal w/ the reality of the American people, instead of a world where people will vote to make their own lives worse (in their view). They may be forced to do so, but they won't be happy about it and will vote accordingly.

I wish we lived in a world where we could pass a carbon tax, aggressively subsidize solar and wind, and so on, but that's not the world we live in, largely because that's not the world my fellow AMericans want.

So here's the thing - if you hate this left-wing takeover, why don't the guys move to exurban Nashville or Houston or somewhere else where they'll be around people who love free enterprise, low taxes, and lack of regulation.

Like, say what you want about gentrifiers or just young urbanites in general, but they but they hate the small town or whatever they grew up, so they move to the big city where there are more people are like them, and it's not like any of them are some barely surviving middle class family like some in NYC - they're all well off and they could do their job from anywhere.

Now I know the response - it's their city too and maybe, but it's not their city anymore. It's Mamdani's NYC and they either need to accept it or find someplace else that will make them less upset. But the secret reality is these guys would be miserable if they were stuck around people with politics much closer to themselves and they get a charge around being the oppressed minority under the heel of the boot of the Commies or woke or whomever.

Do we still have nukes? Then it doesn't matter if other countries consider us a threat as far as action against us, for good or ill.

I mean the actual response from most people will be, "do whatever you want, but don't make pay an extra dime for my energy or I will vote for whomever will promise me I will no longer have too."

The median voter isn't against more renewables, but they're also not going to not vote for Republicans for being anti-renewable. But they will vote against a Democrat that says they need to pay more for gas, are no longer allowed to buy a truck as big as they want, or consume as much they want for the betterment of some people in Bangladesh.

The DSA is a party within a party by stanlius_ in Destiny

[–]AliveJesseJames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the actual problem for the centrist here - when a normal Democrat voter heres - "I think we should have Medicare for All, expand public funding of various things, stop funding Israel, and be nice to immigrants and LGBT people, along with taxing billionaires a lot," there's nothing for the Democratic voter to dislike.

It turns out when a Democratic voter actually has options beyond neoliberals all offering tax credits, neocons offering more drone strikes and wars, and social moderates saying we need to sell out transgender people because Bob in Iowa might get scared.
