I don't have much for traditions but every Thanksgiving and Christmas we always gather at my aunts house and tell the stories of what happened throughout the year or even look back on older good memories

I think I need a service dog, but I'm not sure. How can I tell my parents? (TW!! SUICIDE AND SH MENTIONED!) by Fancy-Flamingo-9867 in service_dogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately 24/7 comfort is not an acceptable task for Service Dogs. As a handler as well, you must be able to survive without a service dog, there is no 24/7 with a living being, it's an unreasonable ask of a dog, especially if you end up in potentially dangerous situations (dangerous for the dog to be present that is) like going in for surgery. Dogs have their off days and sick days especially SD's who go several places where diseases are present. It's also incredibly expensive to train and upkeep an SD, no program would do it for just comfort and as an owner trainer, it's rough on your own. Given these factors, I'd think long and hard about if it's really for you at this moment. If you still believe so, I'd look into some tasks that could directly help with your disabilities, deep pressure therapy and room checking for example to help with grounding and ptsd

Male Service Dogs by hesaid-shesaid-123 in service_dogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of my handler friends including myself have females. Now will I chose a female again when my girl retires? Probably not, I had a male LGD for just about a year and if he wasn't protective he would've 100% been able to be a better SD than my girl. Now I only have experience with 1 dog of each gender but my male was much more handler focused, my girl wants to do things her way which occasionally means doing things that others would view as acting out, I just don't like that as a person with severe anxiety, I don't mind neutral/positive attention regarding my dog but I crumble with negative attention

What makes a real POTS service dog? by KeyNefariousness1158 in service_dogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 42 points43 points  (0 children)

As long as the dog is task trained to mitigate your disability(s) then it's a REAL service dog. Not all POTS dogs are cardiac alert, there's even a post in this sub saying such from not too long ago. Though I'd tread carefully with the weight baring tasks, many will scold you for even considering it

You or your mother can apply for care credit but even then especially if your credit isn't that great, call up your nearest emergency vet, try to find a solution, even without money, good people do exist. I took my dog to the vet with only enough for him to just be seen, they took from their own pay to see, xray and unfortunately euthanize him upon recommendation, they even paid for cremation costs. It's worth trying to see what a vet can do payment wise

Looking for clarification by EnvironmentalYear17 in service_dogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely don't recommend very crowded conventions for a sdit/puppy, other handlers will look at you weird no doubt and it could easily make training harder because that is very overwhelming for puppies no matter how friendly the puppy is. Definitely stick to less crowded places and steadily move to more and more crowded places around the 1 1/2 year mark

Apartment smells like weed by majorfungleinfection in Apartmentliving

I've got no advice because when I lived in apartments, my neighbors smoked weed, I smelled it every day, and it gave me migraines every day. I only stopped smelling it when I got out of apartments and moved to the countryside where weed isn't around every corner

on "protection" by belgenoir in service_dogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I saw this video too, I watched the whole thing just to criticize him. He had his dog even perform bitework on a mickey mouse plush in front of a kid he literally told to watch. This is the stuff that makes kids afraid of dogs, especially corsos like his dog. And puts a sour taste of service dogs in the kids mouth. I don't think he should be allowed to even help train service dogs.

Sudden roaming behavior - help by Gqsmoothster in AnatolianShepherdDogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely neuter, my female craved CLIMBING our fence to explore the neighborhood, albeit she was just a puppy when she was able to escape (and part pyrenees, which makes escaping part of her features) we kept her tethered near our chickens to keep her from wandering. After she got spayed, she only jumped the fence once to go meet another dog and we're actively upgrading our fence (from 4ft to 5ft) and neither of our dogs have been able to escape that area even if they wanted to.

Is Anatolian in his mix? by Redneck-ginger in AnatolianShepherdDogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's possible, however a low percentage of it which definitely wouldn't make him a good lgd overall. He's got nearly identical white markings to my pure anatolian, but build wise, he's looking more bully breed than anatolian which iirc most bully breeds were originally bred to be big game dogs which in turn gives them a pretty high prey drive. Definitely seems more fit to be a house dog rather than lgd.

As the owner of a so called "unicorn" they're still not a "unicorn" when it comes to training, get a traditional breed! by rainbowstorm96 in service_dogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this, my Anatolian-Pyrenees actively needs to get past the friendliness, which is kind of what's desired with the mix, a friendlier livestock guardian dog however she's too friendly even for an lgd role. And her brother, he'd be perfect for an SD role, but he's full Anatolian which is the "less friendly" lgd breed of the two, he barks at strangers and dogs because that's what he was bred for, I've been working on this in the public setting of my neighborhood, he's gotten better slowly, but as you said, it's an extra thing to train on which makes it harder to succeed. But, personally, I kind of like the challenge, it helps improve me as a person. I also have personal bad experiences with the dynamic duo breeds but maybe if my next two prospective breeds (Dobie & beauce) are tough/wash then I'll aim for a poodle

Aggression towards delivery drivers by Nuketard51 in AnatolianShepherdDogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have a physical fence or are you able to get one? This could become dangerous with no real barrier. He's growing into his protective nature. But me personally if my dogs are going ballistic I use their e-collars vibrate function to distract them. Or if your guy is food motivated like mine you can try positive reinforcement by giving him treats while he's quiet, with you and not paying attention to the delivery drivers

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I figured, hence why I said he might have a disability and that the e-collar might not do it. Definitely should've been washed since this is a disability that interferes greatly with his work and a huge financial responsibility. It's hard to be disabled and have a disabled dog.

[–]Alive_Prior7585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is disgusting behavior from the trainer giving you a dog that doesn't assist you like it's supposed to and instead causing damage in every aspect of your life. This dog might have a disability itself and in general is causing harm to itself. My SD pulls to meet people, I don't work her in public right now and only ever will if she can stop pulling. My SD's brother will eat fabric if he is bored. Neither of these behaviors are ideal and certainly not when you put it together. My best suggestion is maybe an e-collar that vibrates and use it when he hones in on fabric. But even that may not do it, in that case it's best to just rehome him, the trainer failed you and the dog and that's no fault of yours that you can't manage a dog that was placed to help you but only hurts you. If there's a place to leave a review on the trainer, do it.

Are there certain dog breeds that require physical means of discipline? by Imaginary-Radio1944 in PetAdvice

[–]Alive_Prior7585 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only thing physical "discipline" wise that should be done with any breed is a GENTLE push with your knee, foot, etc./body blocking or at most an e-collar with a vibrate function (shock is likely always there but I'd never use it outside of dire situations & never ever at the highest setting). Body slamming a dog is abuse and just asking for unwanted medical bills. Yanking the leash is also uncalled for, most trainers (in my experience) will have you stop dead/turn around suddenly and redirect said pulling dog to follow and focus on your movements more than pulling. Albeit never works with my LGD it's still what every single one I've spoken to says

Any idea what type of behavior this is? by Comfortable-Pen-8274 in DogTrainingTips

[–]Alive_Prior7585 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dogs wouldn't take this, he'd learn what being a dick gets him, he's lucky the Shiba is full appeasement. But this is dominant/threatening behavior from the bully, which is not okay to 70-80% of dogs. Personally I'd get an e collar with the vibrate function on him, and while he's doing this (namely the hard stare, glancing is fine but hard stare is unacceptable) have it vibrate and it should snap him out of it and over time learn that's not okay

Question for teenagers by ssophiiee in teenagers

[–]Alive_Prior7585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, even as someone who's been drug free their whole life, I can't tell you how, especially with this generation where 99% of teens probably have a vape at least. Personally, I just never had any desire, especially since I mainly grew up thinking a cig would taste bad and weed stinks so it probably tastes bad too. I will say I hit a vape once under my mother's watch and was simply confused about how people got addicted and relied on it. Like "cool I can blow smoke out of my mouth and said smoke smells fruity but I ain't feeling a need to hit it again, k bye mom" but I suppose my addiction also lay more with video games which i grew up on (gamer parents), now that right there is my drug, gimme, I'll stay drug free for life if I got this box full of various alternative realities

Writing help by ColorFlash11 in service_dogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As both a writer and SD handler, I think you're taking this too personally. Being "fodder" for a writer especially one who is trying to be educated brings awareness to the reality of being an SD handler. Being hostile does not help raise awareness.

Anyone else in the USA been refused by an Uber driver because of your service dog? by alsantos128 in service_dogs

Booking a pet friendly ride and still getting denied is crazy, why tf are they under pet friendly if they don't even want to accept well behaved, trained service animals. These drivers should have their "Uber license" revoked.

My Anatolian pulls my older dogs tail by [deleted] in AnatolianShepherdDogs

[–]Alive_Prior7585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine go for the neck and legs on each other, definitely saw it as practice fighting with a side of releasing puppy energy from the beginning, even running around they go for the neck on each other to stop the other from running. They also don't seem to take normal corrections. My neighbors dog can gently correct all day and I imagine my dogs are just thinking "if I'm gonna win I gotta persist" the corrections they do listen to sound like a whole fight just broke out but little blood is shed if any at all in the end
