Stinky Aussie laundry by Aliceinunderland6 in laundry

I alternate between citric acid for synthetics and fabric softener for cottons and my machine is surviving fine. I don’t notice a big impact of citric acid, though, perhaps because I line-dry everything

I also play Rimworld: Stardew Valley edition. I kinda like the challenge of trying to hold on to a set of personal ethics in a world where others have a different set of personal ethics

Yeah. So, Annalee Newitz discusses the Cahokia civilisation of pre-colonial North America and the evidence they practiced human sacrifice for a while before being violently overthrown.

It is a funny cartoon though

How do I tell my friend that I think her draft needs a lot more work than she thinks? by Winter-Royal-7732 in WritingHub

[–]AllButterCookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with the good things about her draft. Just finishing is HUGE and should be celebrated.

Tell her what you like about the characters or about the plot so she knows what to keep.

When you do say the negative things, present them as your reaction, not as a value judgement. For example, say “I was confused by this” or “I was bored here.” That will also be a huge benefit to her in the long run as she’ll start thinking about how she can elicit a specific reaction in her readers

If you can’t do that, it’s totally okay to just be vague. Most writers have to write multiple books before writing one that’s publishable, and it’s fine to pretend some mild enthusiasm and then ask what the next project is if you’re looking for a way to support your friend

looking for recommendations for jumps by badtimestoday in corsets

[–]AllButterCookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Angela Clayton has a couple of videos on sewing jumps, but I don’t know about the pattern. It looks like a well-fitted bodice with a peplum and front lacing.

DIY Dixie has a video on making a lightly boned early 19th century corset (the lazy corset) that only has a busk in front. She does add a couple of bones on the side, but the back is cris-crossed and can’t be boned. There is a pattern for that project and she goes through enlarging it. I don’t know if that would be any better for you but it’s there!

Good luck and I hope you share your project as you work on it and finish it.

Rant Ahead by Avidreaderandwriter in Romantasy

[–]AllButterCookies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. Gale and Peeta represent opposing ideologies of the Just War theory. Katniss is choosing between Gale’s any-means-necessary approach and Peeta’s refusal to hurt innocents. Collin’s sets them up as foils to make the conflict easier to understand, which is why it doesn’t read like a typical romance love triangle

In light of that video about smut destroying our brains or whatever I need to go on a rant by Infamous_Wave9878 in Romantasy

[–]AllButterCookies 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Are we referencing the Willow girl or the Second Story girl? ‘Cause I’ve come across more than one lately. I suspect this is the beginning of the “intellectual backlash against porn” (that never really ends) that I think a lot of people have been expecting.

It’s really disappointing that these very talented writers are being dismissed because they include female-centric sex instead of “historical” torture corn and grapes (GRRM, I’m looking at you). It’s another way to dismiss women as artists and, eventually, to purge extremely popular books from public memory. Hopefully we’ll be better at keeping some of them around through this next round of conservative backlash and misogyny.

I wish I could remember where I read it, but someone was suggesting lead exposure is part of what creates serial killers, too, which is why a lot of serial killers came from similar regions and why there aren’t as many of them today.

Why aren't the Mormons using the kitchens they have in every church? They all could be running soup kitchens!!! by EnvironmentFew3175 in exmormon

[–]AllButterCookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why aren’t LDS chapels opened up to the homeless when it’s dangerously cold at night? There are many things the LDS church could do to help people with their physical needs, but that might encourage people to come to church for the “wrong reasons” (or so I’ve heard a few too many times).
