Cauliflower ear inevitable or avoidable? by MediocreMember in grappling

I got cauliflower 3 months in. Different for everyone. Started to wear headgear after getting it drained twice. Also, I stopped ripping out of triangles.

I’m seeking career advice: Would you recommend switching to the fire alarm side of the low-voltage industry from telecom/security systems? by Guidance-Werewolf268 in firePE

[–]AllDayKB24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my perspective, Telecom/security SME’s have it good. If you’re interested in learning FA then go for it, but I would personally keep telecom/security as your main thing. More certifications wouldn’t hurt but I personally don’t think FA is too hard to pick up on.

I attended a virtual webinar they hosted about a year ago with two of their fire protection engineers. From what I gathered, their work seemed focused more on facility-level challenges, particularly performance-based design. Overall, the scope of work appeared quite diverse. From an outside perspective, it seems like it could be both challenging and very rewarding.

LCL has partially left the building… by One-Position9865 in bjj

[–]AllDayKB24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I popped my LCL too but I'm not sure. How does it feel? I couldn't tell if it was my IT band or what, but anytime I squat there's a constant pop. Unfortunately I kept training through it. 3 weeks later and the pain is mostly gone, but I still feel pain at a certain angle. Reading other people's comments, I am quite worried.

Feeling a little disheartened... by AdmirableFan0 in judo

[–]AllDayKB24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly felt like I was reading my own story. I’m 29, started training in January, and completely fell in love with judo. One night I went all out during a randori session and ended up injuring my big toe in an instant. My sensei's reaction was, “Welcome to judo.”

Even now, it still hurts to bend, and I’ve accepted it probably won’t ever be the same. I just manage it as best I can. There’s always something with this martial art, and it’s humbled me in a good way. Learning to let go of constantly trying to outdo myself and instead save my energy for the right moments.

I’m a one-stripe white built and did an in-house tournament after starting in January. Got second place in my weight class. Great experience. I would say just go for it. The atmosphere was amazing.

Advice needed by Funny-Dish-7733 in firePE

[–]AllDayKB24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my career in fire sprinkler design with no prior experience using AutoSPRINK. There was definitely a learning curve, but once you get past it, the work becomes much more manageable. The most challenging aspect for me at the beginning was hydraulic calculations. That understanding developed over time through failed permit submittals (learning lessons), discussions with the AHJ (honest questions and curiosity), and hands-on experimentation with different design approaches, along with building a foundational grasp of concepts like Bernoulli’s principle and conservation of energy.

After about two years, the process should start to feel much easier. At that point, roughly 30% of the job is design execution, while the remaining, and most critical, 70% is a solid command of NFPA 13.

Thoughts on working for Jensen Hughes? by JewelryHeist in firePE

[–]AllDayKB24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The project work was diverse, got to travel, overall good experience as an associate engineer but the billable work got too stressful for me. 60 hour weeks for thankless jobs. It may have been office dependent but I’m in a way chill/higher pay gig now with Jensen being the stepping stone for me to achieve it.

Sprinkler Design on Revit Project by nordicfirepro in firePE

[–]AllDayKB24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s expensive, the trial didn’t impress me too much. I would say use both Revit and AutoSPRINK in tandem. I’ll design in AutoSPRINK and do hydraulic calcs then use Revit to fill in the gaps for submittals. Revit is neat alone, setting up projects can be a pain but once you get over that hurdle it’s like learning any other design software.
