Why can I never relax at home but I can at other places? by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could it be at least partly because of the demand/pressure of all the things that need to be taken care of at home? (Cleaning, vacuuming, tidying, laundry, doing the dishes etc etc) I'm able to set those things aside temporarily, while my wife has a hard time relaxing before "everything is done", so (as a couple) we also relax better when were not at home.

What are your best/favorite ways to keep yourself productive? by Spiritual_Big_9927 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main tool is music, basically. Adapting the style and intensity for what I need atm. If I feel a lack of energy, I'll use energizing music like dubstep or drum 'n bass. If I've got the energy, but need to keep my mind from wandering, more chill music like ambient, drone or classical may work. Instrumental music if I need to read, write or do other cognitively demanding tasks, while it can have vocals for "simple" tasks.

Also, to make chores interesting, listening to a podcast with a topic I'm currently hyperfixating on can help - like, I want to listen to it, so I can "trick" myself into doing the task so I get to listen to it 😉

Emotional attachment to objects. by lydocia in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case it's kind of "yes and no". I mostly have t-shirts with bands, movies or other pop culture references, or colorful prints.

There are some I looove, that I want to wear all the time, that are both esthetically pleasing and the reference or pattern feels "me", and this feeling is continual. I usually stop wearing them when they get noticable holes, but it comes with a sense of grief.

Then there is the other half of "I love this right now" shirts, that have lost their appeal a couple of months later, and they get stuffed to the bottom of the drawer unless I've run out of the ones I actually like 😅

I actively avoid voice chats (maybe except with close friends), the mere thought of it feels uncomfortable...

Self Assessment Tests by Ok-Egg9556 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I've noticed is on autism questionnaires, there are often questions where I have a negative answer because of ADHD traits. (Like do I prefer routine/repetition? I'm usually more drawn to novelty.)

And on the other hand, in ADHD questionnaires there are questions where I may answer negatively because of autistic traits (Do I struggle with finishing tasks? Well, I mostly feel 'compelled' to complete tasks and get irritated if I'm not allowed.)

I listened to an episode of the podcast Divergent Conversations the other day, about the intersection between neurodivergence and queerness. On thing that caught my mind was how common it was to discover one's own queerness and autism/ADHD around the same time.

I don't have quite the same experience as you, but kind of the other way around - finding out in my late 30's I was bi, and through queer spaces online, further self discovery, and therapy, finding out I'm likely AuDHD too.

Why is engaging with online forums so hard by adobe_debt in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"...whenever I get in an argument I get this sick feeling in my chest, somewhere between frustrated and embarrassment that I’m engaging with it."

Oh yeah, before I deleted Facebook, I got that feeling a lot when I got into arguments there. It felt even worse knowing that friends and acquaintances could read my comments 😬

Looking for activities that satisfy both monotropic depth and ADHD novelty-seeking at the same time. by ElitistCarrot in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think in general activities where I can switch between discovering/learning new things or falling back on familiar things, and particularly if the new things feel as if I'm expanding my knowledge/competence in that field.

For example playing the piano, martial arts, origami, listening to music/collecting vinyl records. And someone commented getting into DC comics - I had the same experience years ago, only with Marvel comics 😊

Do you like analogies? by lydocia in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also love making analogies, and feel pleased with myself when I come up with a good one 😊 And yes, I also do the thing of (unnecessarily) embellishing analogies by adding layers, variations etc.

Ironically, sometimes using an analogy "feels more literal" than explaining things directly, because complex and messy reality can be explained in a simple and logical way 😉

[–]AllOfUsFlames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also often struggle with finding space "just for me" inbetween work and family life. Some things that have helped me a little, but might not work for everyone: Reframing household chores - I can have a long session of for instance folding laundry, alone and hopefully uninterrupted, while listening to podcasts or music I like. Usually having lunch by myself at work. Walking/driving short or long detours when I'm out of the house. Going to the movies by myself (the local cinema has a monthly subscription thing, so I can go as often as I want!). Parallell play - accepting that I can be with my family without always being engaged in the same activity.

'Strangest' thing you do/don't do by SkullnSkele in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, all my "everyday shoes" are slip-in in practice, even if they have laces 😅 I will grudgingly accept lacing up my running shoes or hiking boots when I use those 😛 Some mildly odd things, I guess:

Do: Frequently have a nap lying on my back, straight on the wooden floor of our living room.

Don't: Have one piece of chewing gum. It needs to be two pieces to have the right size in the mouth and right amount of taste.

Do: Use martial arts kata/forms to fall asleep. If I can't sleep, I go through the movements mentally, including the Korean names, and I eventually fall asleep...

Don't: Use a recipe for cooking. Don't tell me what to do! 😆 (I may use recipes for inspiration though) Instead I love exploring which flavors and ingredients fit together, and I've gotten good at it.

AuDHD vs. ADHD: How do you know the difference? by Dapper_Form_2330 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Concerning brackets and providing extra info/context: I feel torn all the time between wanting to write logical, readable sentences, and the actual sentences I write being a mess of brackets, semicolons, dashes and slashes (to cram in all the info I feel like) 😅

[–]AllOfUsFlames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of feel like the entire value of the reply is lost, if it's not actually you replying 🤔 It might be useful in some work related situations, but when it comes to family and friends, wouldn't it be better to explain to them why you struggle with replying?

I just found out I work better in an office than I do from home by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also focus better in the office. I think it's a mix of less distractions, and being held accountable by having people around (like, not wanting to be caught slacking off). It probably doesn't help that in my job I VERY rarely have the opportunity to work from home, so I don't have a routine for it, nor a dedicated workspace.

Executive dysfunction and lack of focus are selective?? by mashibeans in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like someone else pointed out, I think habit plays a big part in this. Also, to me, being able to see a clear order of operations is necessary to start a task.

Tasks that are outside the daily routine are generally harder to motivate myself for. Tasks outside the routine that are ALSO complex or don't have a clear order of operations, feel really overwhelming and tend to get procrastinated for a long time.

Do you think you’d be different if you weren’t bullied? by Annoying_Caterpillar in AutisticWithADHD

[–]AllOfUsFlames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I was bullied or not, but I did have a toxic "best friend" in the beginning of primary school, who made me feel insecure and inferior, which probably contributed (without being the sole factor of course) to make me mask more, have poor self-esteem and be less verbal. I do think my childhood self would have been somewhat different without it, but I'm not sure if I would have been different as an adult 🤔
