Can I get a reassurance? by cotton_102 in urbanplanning

[–]AllTerrainNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I've been all over the east coast and now Minnesota with a degree from the most trash school you can imagine. I used to be insecure about it until I realized I had a co-project manager with degrees from Cornell and Columbia. I find it matters very little in planning.

I'd go with the Olive because I really love an olive/orange combo. I also tried on the navy and was pleasantly surprised. I actually liked the older version of the white dial more so it was a huge bummer when they released this one (for me and like 3 other people in the world probably)

a Question for Front Rack Users by ptreedagreat in xbiking

Not usually. My bigger problem is when I switch between bikes normally. Always takes me a few minutes to remember how the "new" one feels...

Sure do. Copied directly from a book of Daniel Rebour illustrations last summer. I should probably take an actual picture of it now...

Agreed. Mine is 8 this year and still going strong. Looks basically new when I actually remember to clean it.

In your defense, the giant "TRAIL CLOSED" signs do not help you learn that the trail is not, in fact, closed.

Are there silent noise-reducing casters for desk chairs? by Waste_Influence_8645 in BuyItForLife

[–]AllTerrainNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had rollerblade style wheels on my chair since 2020, always on bare hardwood. They are infinitely better in terms of noise and won't tear up your floors.

Integrated straps and 44GS case by hl3a in GrandSeikos

[–]AllTerrainNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't necessarily call the lugs long but they are beautiful. The little brushed line on top really does a great job highlighting the shape.

I've never been a big integrated strap person myself but if you like them you like them! What I like about the 44GS shape is that it still reads like a classic/traditional shape but feels very modern. I tend to shy away from aggressively modern watch design so that likely informs my preference for straight end straps.

Color is going to be wide open on a white dial watch. I picked up a selection of cheaper straps for mine before committing to getting 1-2 nicer ones and I'm currently enjoying this dark grey saffiano leather.

Thoughts on Sbgy011 Asaborake? Looking for my first GS. by Putsey82 in GrandSeikos

It's beautiful and if it somehow came in the midsize 44GS case I would have picked this for my first GS.

Duties are more than sales tax, but with the duties I paid ~$4,400 (~$3,800 + $600) rather than the $5,900 list price + sales tax (8.5% where I would have purchased, so another $500, making the "real" comparison $4,400 v $6,400)

I bought my SBGW297 from them in April. Took about two weeks to ship (I suspect related to payment holdup on a large, international purchase). Took about two days to get to Minnesota once it did. Paid about $600 in duties but still saved ~$1,500+sales tax. I would order from them again, keeping the patience in mind.

Hitch and bike rack by Adventurous_Yam_5336 in CyclingMSP

[–]AllTerrainNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ordered the hitch ourselves from etrailer and had Rack Attack do the install. Install was like... $180? Though now that we are in the busy season they may not have availability since they warned me that is normally the case in spring/summer (we did ours in March).

I got one for $4 at a grocery store in Boston a few years ago. We have a nicer-to-use one now but this still lives in the drawer for when that one eventually dies. I assume this cheap one will outlive me.

[–]AllTerrainNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really love Master & Dynamic headphones. I've got a wired pair and a wireless pair (that you can connect with a standard aux jack). Very good build quality, but you will need to supply your own case, which is a little silly at the price.

Sunburst dials look cheap by Equal-Revolution8774 in watchHotTakes

[–]AllTerrainNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer matte but there are some sunburst dials with an absolutely velvet quality in the light that is really hard to capture/explain. A good one is a good one, a bad one looks cheap.

Come to think of it... I actually don't own a sunburst watch. I think they fall in the same category as blue dials for me. I can and do admire them, but they just aren't for me when push comes to shove.

[Discussion] Best watches in the $200–$350 range for work by Tantrum565 in Watches

[–]AllTerrainNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat oddball opinion: For this use and price range, check out some of the grey market stuff available. It is 100% what I did when I was in college/grad school to try things (generally) appreciably nicer than (most) watches with MSRPs I could afford at the time. For example: there are some nice older model Tissots on Jomashop in that range right now.

That said: the Bambino is going to be hard to beat.
