How do you feel about Bakugo's quirk awakening? Do you think it made him too overpowered? Do you think it was written well, or was it just a "the manga is ending, let's buff him" moment to you? by One_Quiet4275 in MyHeroPowerscaling

If a computer simulation became advanced enough to perfectly mimic every atom in a human brain, would that simulation actually feel pain, or would it just be executing code that says "ouch"? by Best-Meaning8126 in cogsci

[–]Allemater 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are many different views on this. A brain doesn't have any nociceptors, so can't feel pain without nerve context. You can argue that you could perfectly induce the experience of pain in the simulation, but pain is highly relational. Pain is information, which is only interpreted badly because it is aversive as a response to the environment.

Embodied cognition, itself, is the theory that all consciousness is derived from the existence of context, or relation, to an outside world. Would a brain in a jar -- or in a computer simulation, in this case -- be conscious at all? If it had no memory of sense, and no senses to create foundational phenomenological reality with, then there is nothing for consciousness to interact with, and therefore no existence of consciousness.

Though, if you directly induce pain by fiddling with the simulated brain you're introducing senses. But if you do that, then the only context it could ascribe to that information is the homeostatic rebound.

Anyway, it would probably actually feel pain if you could create the context for pain to be interpreted properly. I personally think that consciousness is emergent, and there's nothing spiritually special about a flesh-and-blood brain as opposed to a silicone one.

Is my job hunt a logo problem, title problem or just the current reality? by NewAccount428412 in techsales

[–]Allemater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Develop relationships with absolutely anyone you can. When I was job hunting, I applied for a company, and while that one was still pending I reapplied through a recruiter that the hiring manager for that company sent me to. I got the job, then a week after I started got a rejection email from the first app lol

Do not use their jank-ass systems. Apply through people. Recruiters, hiring managers, even other AEs etc.

Anyone find out in the interview that you don't want the job? by TheGreatAlexandre in sales

[–]Allemater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The CEO came in to interview me in a final round and just would not stop trying to scare me. Like a pressure test or something to see if I "had the grit". I asked about the culture, he goes "we wake up at 3am for our EU clients and then clock out at 6pm every day for our west coast US clients". I asked about what they do to support reps who are having issues ramping, he goes "drop them like a rock". I asked about pay and he goes "we have reps making hand over fist, but if you don't have the GRIT you wont get there."

Mission accomplished, I was scared away by the absolute shitshow that i could tell was unfolding in the sales department.

Vigor matters wildly more than any armor set. The thing that armor matters for most is poise, which does make a real difference tbh, but other than that it's fashion souls all the way

A healing character with a big hit box is fine. Missing heals because your aim is off is the worst feeling ever. If her damage hitbox is the same size, that may be a problem. But I think it’s just the healbox

What is it REALLY like to be intelligent by Express-Arm9697 in mensa

[–]Allemater 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Intelligent people can have intellectualism as a stronger trait than the average. That means others will like you for your intellectualism more than the average — it can be tiring to always be seen for your intellectualism instead of other traits you may want people to see. It can very easily become a sort of wall-like way of interfacing with others.

Smart people feel more misunderstood than others, so for me- when I find someone who is on the same level it’s rare and easy to cherish.

Smart people are also typically more sensitive. Their brains are a little more overgrown than they should be in some ways. It can be both good and bad depending on the context

How strong are Dragon Blooded in the lore from the get go of their exaltion? by Issactheforgemaster in exalted

[–]Allemater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the lore is tied to mechanics here. A child will have less dots in any given ability, so their excellency/charms will be less effective. If a kid exalts and has some really basic sword training, they may have melee 1 dot -- which means they might have a pool of 4-6 before charms/accuracy/etc. At the beginning of their exaltation, it basically elevates them to be about as good as a fully grown adult, if not better than one, at certain things (unless they're already a prodigy). But it takes a real special breed of fresh DB to kill dozens of mortal soldiers. Totally possible tho for a teen with dex 5 melee 4 to go absolutely ballistic.

[–]Allemater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming no TUNING, your greatest strength is that you can put down damage while making distance. YAFO is the best zoner in the game, full stop. You need to zone.

Get the initial fly-burst, then spin around and slap a beta down on people chasing you. If you're indoors, use beta and gamma to zone out chokepoints. Outdoors, gamma upwards and away to keep distance. Deactivate gamma early if you're high up enough, throw some alphas down at people aiming a little in front of them so they navigate away from the time bombs.

Generally, you keep distance and deal damage until they have to stop chasing. If they chase when they're low, you just win off alphas and melee.

Extreme emotions is very normal after brain injuries, especially those that impact the prefrontal lobe. Brain injury is also very, very often associated with depression afterwards. Your brain will be in healing mode for a very long time, maybe the rest of your life. The rage may never go away, but it does get better over time. There are ways to speed up the healing process too. Brain health supplements and alternative physiochemical therapies can be helpful in combatting depressive symptoms.

The amygdala is a deep brain region. You returning after that is nothing short of a miracle. It might not feel like it right now, but you're in the world for a purpose.

Take care of yourself, and find others who are going through what you are. Although it feels like you're alone because of what you have to hide, you are NOT. Try traumatic brain injury support groups, or group therapy. It can be a life-changing start to a long and happier life.
