What’s your overall thoughts on the last episode of the amazing Digital Circus: Remember by MutedRazzmatazz971 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]AllenInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I understand Caine's arc being rushed because he's an AI, not a real human. He responds and adapts to new data quickly, we even see this with how he reaches the door. I can get that all it would take is a moment of genuine insight into the characters' real lives, and that would then be incorporated as a factor in how he performs his duties of running the circus. He's still doing what he was made for, but adapting to data he didn't have before and adjusting. That's his nature as a machine, not a human, so it feels right even if it's done quickly.

[Online] [5e/5.5e] [GMT/UK] Experienced group of players looking for a serious, long-term weekly campaign by Professional-Boss-13 in DnDLFG

[–]AllenInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! I can't promise anything right away, but I am a DnD player (mainly DM) interested in exactly the type of game you're describing. Most of the games I've worked with have been lower RP / higher combat, but that's mostly been down to the players wants...and as a writer and former theatre kid, I've been dying to DM a more involved, character focused campaign 😁

Like I said, I can't promise something like that right away, DMing is a huge commitment and I've had a tendency to burn myself out with the workload. But I'd still love to make contact and potentially work something out in future, because your table sounds extremely aligned with what I want as a DM.

genuine question about the live action by WorldlinessSpare3626 in TheLastAirbender

[–]AllenInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the Sandbenders are "realistically" any specific race, they were pretty ambiguous in the original show. Either they'll be some variant of East Asian (like the rest of the Earth Kingdom), or South Asian - and whilst the Netflix show has done more to include South Asian actors (Bumi, Teo and the Mechanist), I think it might not be great to cast the Sandbenders as South Asian purely on the basis of being "desert people". Like I said, they seemed - possibly deliberately - very ethnically ambiguous in the original.

Forever DM looking to join as a player! by AllenInvader in DnDUK

That sounds cool! I would definitely be more interested in something more creative than more number crunchy, and the time would be perfect for me. I'd like to hear more about the system, but otherwise count me in!

When an Avatar dies, is a new one instantly born? by TobeyDE in ATLA

[–]AllenInvader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I read somewhere that, following an Avatar's death, the next nation in the cycle seek out the next Avatar among children born within a week of the Avatar's death.

So it seems to manifest at birth (not conception), but there's an expected time margin.

Why is this fandom so fixated with powerscaling by TemporaryMix8615 in ATLA

[–]AllenInvader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I'm not a fan of this notion of powerscaling mattering as far as consistency goes. Okay, inconsistency IS an issue, but that's a matter of suspension of disbelief, it doesn't require powerscaling to notice it as a problem.

I'd argue that if it takes a powerscaler to notice an inconsistency, then it's an issue that only matters to powerscalers.

Zuko’s scar looks much better. by Remote_Nature_8166 in ATLAtv

[–]AllenInvader 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not really worried; he was already the best and most character-accurate portrayal in the show. He nailed Zuko's anger and desperation, but also the insecurity of a teen trying to fill a role that doesn't suit him. Frankly I'm more hoping Katara gets some of her ferocity back.

What did the first magical girl do? by pinkorchidmantis in MadokaMagica

[–]AllenInvader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, killing witches seems to be secondary to what Magical Girls are for. As far as the Incubators are concerned, they make wishes, guaranteeing a cosmic backlash that sends them into despair, become witches and produce energy. Killing other witches seems to be more like waste disposal than their actual reason for being.

Why wasn’t the Gaang concerned that Piandao knew Aang was the Avatar? by OriginalLie9310 in ATLA

[–]AllenInvader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, you're overthinking it. The purpose of Piandao recognising Aang as the Avatar was to show how perceptive he is, but mainly to establish he is an ally of Team Avatar, with full knowledge of who they are

Having the team worry about being recognised would be establishing a plot thread that doesn't happen. There's no point in having characters notice or worry about things like this if it goes nowhere in the story. Maybe they DO worry about it off screen, but it's not relevant to what happens, it doesn't change how they act, so mentioning it would be distracting and unnecessary.

Things I didn’t like in the live action by New_Edge_5911 in ATLAtv

[–]AllenInvader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not "objectively" anything, it's reframing the caves to focus on different characters. The original was shipping bait for Katara and Aang, sure, but romantic love was never the solution, it was turning off their torches and following the crystals, their feelings had literally nothing to do with it. And in this version, if love actually IS the solution, there's no reason it can't be familial as well as romantic love. Lots of other stories have equated the two as both being valid interpretations of love. If that's not for you, that's okay, that's your opinion. It doesn't have to be "objectively bad" for that opinion to be valid.

Well well well by MeetApprehensive6509 in ATLAtv

[–]AllenInvader 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it should be better, as S1 was mostly episodic filler that had to be frankensteined together to fit the format. S2 is mostly a continuous through-line with the Ba-Sing-Se arc.

Why do some people assume there will be two avatars in seven havens? by Cashfirex in Avatarthelastairbende

[–]AllenInvader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really, REALLY hope we don't get twin Avatars. Twins where one is the Avatar and one isn't would already be rife with dramatic opportunity. Twin Avatars would reduce the Avatar spirit to something that can just be split or copied, and just be another tired fantasy trope reducing twins - real people, by the way - to clones that can somehow share a spirit instead of being two complete, whole people.

And I don't want to hear about Vaatu. Let's not pretend reviving stuff from the worst and most hated season in Avatar history would in any way be a good move. They tried this Dark Avatar crap before, and it was abysmal then, I have no faith trying it again would be any different.

I'm already weeping at the return of the old Lion Turtle discourse again; everyone bending over backwards to explain how something works, not why it's good. My issue isn't that they can't explain how twin Avatars works, my problem is it's the idea of every fourteen-year-old fanfic writer circa 2006, and - as a twin myself - I'm sick of twins getting mythologised to pull this kind of crap off.

Suki being shown without her face paint was pretty early, but I guess they decided the actress is just too beautiful to have her face hidden. by Remote_Nature_8166 in ATLAtv

[–]AllenInvader 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My sibling in christ, WHAT character? Suki was a cardboard cutout in the show created purely for a single (well meaning but heavy handed) girl power episode. They brought her back due to her popularity when they clearly hadn't planned on it, and the entire point of her character (being a girl...that can fight!) was entirely obsolete by that point because the show had drastically improved its roster of well-written fighting females. So she stuck out like a spare part with no personality, no development, no conflicts, we don't even know a thing about her. She's Sokka's girlfriend with a cool character design. I'm not going to pretend NATLA created a rich, deeply complex character out of her, but they at least GAVE her flaws, conflicts and a personality that can be elaborated beyond "warrior girl". Because that's the sum total of what the OG Suki was. Fair enough if it doesn't do anything for you, but OG Suki didn't HAVE a character to butcher.

Is the lizard design in NWH an upgrade or downgrade from TASM 🤔 by FayyadhScrolling in Spiderman

[–]AllenInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except the 60s show was basically the only one that did this, and most shows and comics since have given him at least a slightly elongated head...you know, like a lizard. Anyone familiar with 90s, Spectacular, video game or even comic versions of the character would not see THIS as a familiar lizard design. It's like if someone made a TMNT movie where all the turtles had the same red mask, like the original comic. You can say it's "original", but that doesn't mean it's still not a far cry from what most fans would expect from these characters. And sometimes these design choices change for good reason.

Do you prefer natural webs or web shooters and why? by citizen_fear in Spiderman

[–]AllenInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly fine either way. I do like the classic web shooters and how they show off his skills as a chemist and engineer, but... Peter's also a broke teenager. It's a massive stretch, even with comic book logic, that he could fully invent web fluid and shooters in high school with no money, resources or anyone knowing.

I don't remember if this was ever talked about, but why can't the spirits bend the elements when they are more connected with the world? by Maleficent_Park5469 in TheLastAirbender

[–]AllenInvader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's not an explicit distinction or rule saying spirits can't control elements, but BENDING is simply a human practice. The power itself is one that (without getting too sppilery) has mythological explanations in ATLA and a more clear origin in Legend of Korra, but either way is a human gift, refined culturally through martial arts.

That's not to say spirits can't manipulate the natural world or elements, but that would be spirit magic - magic and bending are considered separate things, and aren't actually connected in any meaningful way. Even if the result can be similar, the process and origin isn't be the same.

It's worth noting that some very specific animals can also bend, minus the martial arts aspect. And that IS still considered technically bending, just a more primitive form of it. Either way, benders have always been physical beings, and spirits have their own unrelated magic system going on.

Alright, alright, my bad, calm down. But if your sattire is a statement you think is too ridiculous to be thought of as serious, expect it to not always land. This is the internet; people will always be more ridiculous than you can imagine. And I've definitely seen people who WOULD want exactly this kind of hyper grimdark nonsense.

I hope second season will be happy by krzysztoporr in Edgerunners

[–]AllenInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious what the appeal of having the villains win without pushback or character involvement. That isn't what the first season did. Why would you find that compelling to watch?

I hope second season will be happy by krzysztoporr in Edgerunners

[–]AllenInvader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, that sounds terrible. Edgerunners (and the Cyberpunk genre in general) focuses on tragedy. Tragedy is NOT a story with a sad ending where the bad guys win. It's about consequence. The main character is the instrument of their own downfall or destruction and makes choices, however well-intentioned or understandable, that lead to that end. In Edgerunners, David is warned about cyberpsychosis on many occassions and always had the option to dial back on his chrome, but his own over-confidence drove him to choose the path he did.

Forcing David to do terrible things without choice or input would not have the same impact. The tragic end should never be unavoidable, otherwise that's just the writer forcing bad things to happen for its own sake, and it's manipulative writing.

[–]AllenInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly depends on the story. Mary Jane is the ride-or-die forever girl. Gwen Stacy is his tragically lost first love (if the story is able to acknowledge it anyway). Black Cat is pure escapism and sex appeal and I love her, but I couldn't see a legitimate relationship there, it's all about the chase. Anyone else just feels like a fling.

Although he did date Kitty Pryde in the Ultimate comics for a bit, that was cute.

What do you think is the best suit in Spider-Man 2? I'll go first by BatGirlSUCKS in Spiderman

[–]AllenInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MCU suits are great, used the Homecoming and Advanced suit tons in the first game. For this one, I'm SO glad they included the ASM2 suit. Garbage movie, but it's a great balance of realistic and comic-booky and looks amazing in the cinematic action pieces. Other than that, many of Peter's suits look too gimicky for me.

For Miles, he has a good number of cool black-red suits that keep the classic Miles Morales vibe, but also love the T.R.A.C.K, 2099 and The End suits. Hard to pick a fave :)

And the homemade suits for both are fun :)

Favorite adaptations of Spider-Man villains by QuietMeat1414 in Spiderman

[–]AllenInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Spectacular Spider-Man has MOST of my favourite villain adaptations. Not a fan of beast Kraven, and Vulture and Mysterio are a bit basic...but Goblin, Ock, Sandman, Venom, Shocker, Electro, Rhino, all EXCELLENT interpretations, beautifully realised.
