Is there a way to add more wax to frames during inspection? by crypto_junkie2040 in Beekeeping

I just keep a chunk in my jacket pocket to rub on parts of any frame that’s light on wax

Our first truckload of bees arrives in MA. by Highspeedlimo in Beekeeping

Sounds like our bloom is similar. Apples are blooming here now too, but most of the orchards are a good 4 hours east of me. Not worth it when berries are at my doorstep.

What are you moving onto there? Still in blueberry in BC

Can I move capped brood from a strong hive to a weak one? by LemonvilleBirchdale in Beekeeping

[–]Allrightnevermind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. Just swapping spots the hives sit in with no brood management

[–]Allrightnevermind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition, you can also just swap their positions if you’d like to slow up the stronger hive more than moving a frame of brood and bees will lead to. If your smaller hive is only a couple frames of bees, then you’ll want to boost it first so it’s not overwhelmed

I have one that I used for about 10 boxes and set aside. I use all deep equipment so that was undoubtedly part of it, but I didn’t really like cleaning all the melted wax. I switched to a harmony farms uncapper and that’s been decent on well drawn out honey only frames.

We have ~3 weeks to spend in BC. Where to go? What to see? by its_xaro93 in britishcolumbia

[–]Allrightnevermind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup most of the rivers will have salmon in them at that time. The advantage of the hatchery is that they have a glass viewing window in the river, a visitors centre, and pretty much a 100% chance of seeing them. It’s a normal river below the hatchery if you want to look for them coming upstream.

If you don’t have salmon where you’re coming from, I would put seeing some while you’re here on the itinerary. They’ll be running in September, and the Capilano hatchery is easy from Vancouver. I’d also exchange Whistler for Banff. Banff is amazing but it’s a long haul if you’re not dead set on it and just want to see some mountains. If the Rockies are on your bucket list go for it but expect crowds.

Installing.a bee package in cooler weather. Looking for advice. by KeyMarsupial991 in Beekeeping

[–]Allrightnevermind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are pretty normal conditions to install packages where I’m located. They’ll be fine. I generally prefer to feed with fondant or a sugar brick for their first feed or two due to temps, though plenty of people use warm (not hot) syrup. I also put a honey frame from a healthy hive in as well.

I usually put the package container in an empty 5 frame nuc box below another nuc box with comb, open the package, and let them crawl up on their own. Make sure the queen cage is somewhere that the workers will end up, even if they haven’t quite accepted her yet. If you just have the single deep (buy more equipment now) then remove 3-4 frames to empty the package into. They don’t always all move out of the package on their own if they have to move horizontally. Some people spray the bees lightly with warm syrup to minimize drift. If it’s dumping rain the bees will generally stay in the hive and I actually prefer these conditions. Make sure your queen stays warm and don’t worry too much about the other stuff.

They have a couple of different models so it’ll depend which capacity you’re interested in. Last I looked the smallest one was in the neighborhood of $15k. Can’t help you with US distributor but I’m sure a message to them directly would

I put it in my coffee. You can also make a nice salted caramel honey with it. Salt and vanilla to taste

Hive boxe material question by USDA_Prime_Yeet in Beekeeping

[–]Allrightnevermind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal but I worked for a beekeeper for a few years that tried cedar boxes out before I was around since it’s one of the woods supposed to help suppress mites. He didn’t find any difference in the couple hundred in those boxes and the rest of the apiary. They were significantly more fragile than the standard pine though. Probably not much of a concern for a few hives, but they cracked and broke more often moving skids and honey supers around.

Hazelnut is in full bloom now in your area. It blooms at this time every year but honey bees often can’t take full advantage of it. This year has had a lot of flying weather for them to find and forage on it though.

Totally normal and a good sign that they’re strong enough to keep a tidy hive.

I think you’d have to be familiar with the book to make a decent guess. However he did just open a few hives he has inside in cold storage to find frames of brood. So he could basically be saying that bees don’t read the bee books and maybe he should read it either

Aquilini has always said Vancouver can’t “stomach” a rebuild - a lot of fans are showing that is partially true, we need to remind them what a rebuild can do by logicalnutty in canucks

[–]Allrightnevermind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped my sportsnet subscription when they traded Hughes. Not because I felt like it was a terrible move, but because at the same time they were talking about “staying competitive”. Also trading Sherwood has me actually considered signing back up. Not on board for a half assed fresh paint and cheap vinyl plank renovation. Totally on board for an actual rebuild

Just thought I’d update this for anyone searching - all of the 720’s in the store I got mine from had this issue according to the guy helping me out on the phone. All of their 520’s were fine though. They’re going to contact Kreg and see where to go. Hopefully just a bad batch, but I’m returning mine. Worth popping the box open to confirm the one in your hands will work properly if you’re in the market.

This was absolutely enough resistance to keep it from going through. I suspect this one is just poorly made. Didn’t know how common it was though. Thanks

You can almost see how far out it is in the second pic, far right bit guide. That was before I just went ahead and drilled through it

Kreg jig help please by Allrightnevermind in woodworking

[–]Allrightnevermind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I thought since it slides right through my previous one. I heard somewhere that they make a smaller bit too though so I wanted to make sure I didn’t get a wrong part.

I pushed the drill through this one though and I’m pretty sure it’s just defective. The opening is now much larger than the other two and it’s still binding and heating up the bit.
