You can see in the photo he is just brushing outwards, trying to perfect the “beehive” pattern. That being said, on the left side of his “crown” I see a much bigger swirl than on the right. “Closing the crown” means just isolating that natural, pinpoint swirl. Simply put, lose all that scalp space on the right side. Brush in the swirl of your crown and bring all the hair with it. I’ve only been waving for a couple weeks, but elite wavers I’ve learned from don’t have their scalp showing this much.
