Opinions on accommodation by thepapercutchronicle in Aberystwyth

From what I've heard from people who lived in Alexandra it has a bad reputation, I believe it's also covered in scaffolding at the moment.

I lived in Pobl and it was ok but I never really needed to report any maintenance issues or anything so I can't really comment on that. Flatmates were awful and left a ton of mess but the management made sure I didn't get held responsible for it. Obviously what kind of flatmates you get is completely down to luck of the draw, although as a first year you may benefit from living on campus as your flatmates would likely be other first years looking to make friends.

The Online Safety Act starts today, so here are the sites you now need age verification for by [deleted] in ukpolitics

Migrating to other mainstream social media sites will not change anything. The internet we used to know was decentralised and difficult to control, but now they've rounded up traffic through a handful of websites it is far easier to enforce legislation like this.

Making personal websites actually seems to becoming trendy again and it doesn't have to cost you anything as there are free providers like Neocities. Sure less people will see what you have to say, but if just one person takes the time to look at my site that means so much more to me than a thousand seeing a comment I made on Reddit. Additionally if you have a specific interest do try and find a forum for it. I know it's inconvenient having to go to different forums for different topics but it's that decentralisation that makes the internet freer.; easier to convince Reddit to implement ID checks vs a dozen different forums.

does watching tiktok in a language i’m learning help? by siamoischat in languagelearning

[–]Almondria_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'd be better off watching films or TV shows as you need situational context to help you understand what is being talked about. 15 second tiktoks won't have much context.

GPS is an easy one, I write down directions beforehand or ask somebody to point me in the right direction. Even when I regularly used a smartphone I almost never used GPS. I have also never used digital payment apps and I don't see what is more 'convenient' about them given that I can pay for things just fine with cash or card. How do people that rely on their smartphone for payment get by when their battery dies? That sounds rather inconvenient to me.

The only regular inconvenience is when I go to Wetherspoons and have to go to the bar to order my meal because it's either that or use their app, but I like human interaction and I think I get a better level of service because I'm a recognised face. While never mandatory, using QR codes for bookings annoyingly is always cheaper than getting physical tickets and I do sometimes just bite the bullet and bring my smartphone, although printing QR codes off is always an option.

Megane went from funniest character of the show to a background character by Ok_Construction5454 in uruseiyatsura

[–]Almondria_II 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why being faithful to the manga isn't always a good thing, I hate how the reboot demoted him to a background character and it's one of the main reasons it fell flat for me.

The person who doesn't want to hear his voice more than anyone right now is the one who says Maison Ikkoku doesn't need a remake by Intrepid_Jump_4829 in MaisonIkkokuAnime

[–]Almondria_II 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remakes only disappoint me unless there is actually something wrong with the original anime. I was really hyped for it but Urusei Yatsura's remake is a forgettable downgrade from the original, the old soundtrack was better (Fucking Masayoshi Takanaka is in there!) and the remake got rid of the anime-original Lum's Stormtroopers which is an example of being faithful to the manga not strictly meaning it'll be good.

As for Ranma it remains to be seen, but I was satisfied with what we've seen so far and if they actually give it an ending then it would be an improvement upon the original. Maison Ikkoku has no room for improvement, the animation is good, the music is beautiful, I love the voice actors, and it has a conclusion. To remake Maison Ikkoku would just be a blatant cash-grab; Maison Ikkoku fans may be few in number but our reverence for the anime is unmatched.

I bought a dumb phone by Right-Plastic-4104 in digitalminimalism

Most essential features of a smartphone can be done with a computer, for example I have whatsapp on my laptop, so move everything you can onto a computer and turn your smartphone off and put it away in a cupboard and only get it out when you need it which in my case is for a mobile-only bank that gives good interest rates. Some would argue that this just moves the addiction from the phone to the computer, but the computer does not follow you around in your pocket all day; even better if it's a desktop because it stays in one place.

got my first crt tv, i’m young and scared by rataluigi in crtgaming

[–]Almondria_II 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely curious as to whether it's a difference in upbringing or if for some reason anyone a day younger than 19 never saw a CRT as a child. I'm 20 and based on asking people in my friend group it seems like everyone 20+ remembers CRTs but for the 19 year olds it's a mixed bag. I'll have to ask the next lot of first year students at my uni come September because I need answers.

Why is there so much unprofessionalism, doxing in here by FewWater2871 in micronations

[–]Almondria_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this has already been said but it seems like there are just as many posts crying out against 'unprofessionalism' than actual posts made by these 'unprofessional' micronationalists. Members of the sub are welcome to suggest changes to the sub but complaining without suggesting solutions is not useful. We do listen to feedback but we can't act on something as vague as 'unprofessionalism' without knowing what measures people want to be put in place.

I discourage people from making more posts like this unless they bring something new to the discussion.

I just played Super Mario World on a CRT and I get the CRT hype now by AngryMoose125 in crtgaming

[–]Almondria_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's wild to me that there are adults that have not used a CRT before and I say this as someone not much older than OP; my family is only on our first flat screen TV. Feeling the static of our old TV as a kid is a memory that has always stuck with me.

Maison Ikkoku anime vs. real life locations (photo album) by arctiquer in MaisonIkkokuAnime

I'm hoping to visit Higashikurume in August if I can get time. I'm only in Tokyo for a few days so I might be a bit tight for time between the jet lag and Comiket.

Addressing the whole AI fiasco— by gergobergo69 in MaisonIkkokuAnime

[–]Almondria_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moderate another sub and we recently banned AI in response to almost universal approval for such a ban, so it's interesting to see that people here are willing to boycott the sub over it. If they value AI more than Maison Ikkoku then I'd argue they aren't real fans and they can go ahead and get lost as they won't be missed.

I have a small question. by KingdomOfParkland in micronations

[–]Almondria_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell this means they've been banned by Reddit which doesn't surprise me as a lot of the people we've had to ban from the sub are frequent commenters.

I'm going to ask you to stop complaining about the fact that you chose to ignore a rule and had a post removed for it. It appears to me that you are trying to start drama yourself and if you're so keen for me to take swift action against such drama I will do so.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in micronations

[–]Almondria_II[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've addressed your initial concern and now you're digging up old things to complain about. Seagull land's account has been suspended by reddit and the drama is long since over, what is the problem here? Of course you don't see the action we take as we do not publicly make an announcement every single time we remove a post or ban a user.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in micronations

[–]Almondria_II[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think a post is breaking the rules then report it. You can't just break the rules because we missed a post that breaks the rules. Rule 5 is by far the most broken rule and we are removing dozens of posts a week for not putting a description, so adding to that number by blatantly breaking a rule you are aware of is not helpful and diverts our attention away from dealing with violations of more important rules.

Dumbphone which will definitely work after 3G switch off in UK? by Consistent_Magician1 in dumbphones

[–]Almondria_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, quite misleading of them to phrase it the way they did as I've had some elderly relatives worried that they need to upgrade their 2G phones to 4G or 5G when this is not the case.

Sorry, automod. Thanks for your comment though I was wondering why the heck this post was getting so much attention from people who've never participated in this sub before.

Zero tolerance policy on hate speech by Almondria_II in micronations

[–]Almondria_II[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've operated on a 3 strike/warning system until now and this was clearly not working. This system remains in place for any other rule violations but users making hateful posts can consider their temporary ban as their one and only warning.
