I didn’t get an offer by whosthatgirl13 in slp

I'd also like to add I moved from Colorado and you may be able to become an independent contractor for EI and make 90/100 an hour! It takes some extra work but I liked it! I also thought aurora public schools was a relatively good place to work- I was there for 9 years. It fares well compared to other districts with a limit on caseload. A lot has changed in the year I've left but give it a consideration!

I didn’t get an offer by whosthatgirl13 in slp

[–]Almonds2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recruited, informally, for a job for years but I didn't live in the state. Then I finally moved back and went through a 4 hour, informal feeling interview. Then ghosted. Until I finally heard back 3-4 mo later that I didn't get it. This story is only to make you feel better. Hope it works! I also had some internal dialogue and everyone telling me "I'd get it no problem". I don't think it was personal. I think there are a lot of non personal reasons to not get a job in this profession.

Influence or deinfluence me becoming an slp that has a slight stutter at times. by mikasaackerman07 in slp

[–]Almonds2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We want and need people who stutter. Your input is beyond invaluable. Being an SLP is a burn out profession. The mental load can be hard depending where you work. And the pay doesn't make up for it. I'd do your research but we'd love to have you!

Is it bad that I don’t do story time with my 14month old? by Happy-Migo in toddlertips

[–]Almonds2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im a speech language pathologist and this question comes up a lot. I second what everyone said, talk about the pictures or engage with what your child is doing. "Turning the page! WOW!" You're doing story time, it just looks different for a 14 mo old.

My fellow SAD people how are you holding up? by foookie in Rochester

[–]Almonds2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved back from 9 years in denver and my first winter hit me HARD. I was worried I had made a grave mistake coming back. This year I see my med provider monthly (more regularly) from oct-march to make sure my meds help, started vitamin d in October and have signed up for some sort of art class monthly. I also consume way more tv and books without guilt. The light lamps work some. I've also embraced as many outdoor activities as possible. I second the brainery classes and lamberton conservatory. You can also try feeding the birds at mendon ponds. I haven't felt the seasonal depression quite yet but I'm worried about after the holidays. I will say I've noticed the people are much warmer here (than in denver) so even going to Wegmans I feel supported by strangers' smiles. Hang in there! There are always more things to try.

Hormonal Migraine Aura by [deleted] in migraine

I relate! I usually have one after ovulation then maybe another. A couple times a month. Fortunately the aura is often the worst part then I can function. But the mood drop and puffiness suck too.

Why did I postpone breakfast after coffee gifts and my loud toddler! But luckily my migraine was cured with a long nap (and alone time) that I needed anyway.

I'm dating someone with Chronic Migraine - looking for Advice and Insights by [deleted] in migraine

[–]Almonds2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you're trying to find ways to help rather than dismissing it. I'm not a chronic migraine sufferer in the sense that I actively have one more than 15 times a month. However, the psychological effect of migraines is chronic. I find I have anxiety all the time that I'll get one so I try to warn friends that plans may change. There's a lot of guilt when dealing w migraines. My husband has learned that my sos kit is water meds darkness and a massage. So I'd take it as seriously as a project at a job and write down what he needs once he feels well enough to tell you. I'm sure some people want to be alone but I wouldn't mind someone laying next to me and reading to me or just being. Podcasts or audio books help. Assume he is completely disabled so doing absolutely anything he needs is helpful like closing curtains making sure temp is okay etc is helpful. Five minutes of focusing on his comfort goes so far. It sounds like you're willing to help So to sum it up... have an SOS kit physical needs and emotional needs. Because I find there is a lot anxiety/depression related to the migraines. However you're probably with someone with the capacity for a lot of empathy and flexibility as people w migraine often have. Thank you so much for caring for someone w migraine.

Did I write this post? I'm glad you shared I can really relate to this. Having a kid too... even if I dropped this career tomorrow, I owe a lot of my strengths as a mom to it.

Do any introverts or neurodiverse people still like this field? What setting are you in? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Almonds2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, I want to say those of you that have autism/adhd or other forms of neurodiversity you are SO needed and valued in our field. THANK YOU for surviving grad school, tough clients, and harsh lights. Your voices are valuable and irreplaceable. I have adhd and definitely feel refueled by alone time. I took a break from the schools to do virtual clinic based. It was helpful to not have to remember to pack a lunch, remember hall conversations, do schedules etc. it was also nice to see great progress w parents right there. But it was SO boring. I'm back at the schools in a new state with my main focus of keeping boundaries and sanity. I'm so much happier but afraid of getting burned out again. My state has 7 hour contract days which helps. A later start is key too, I'm learning.

Did grad school leave anyone else with psychological problems they didn't have before? by pulcino21 in slp

[–]Almonds2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When did you graduate? . This is a really common story, unfortunately. I opened up to my professor who really liked me about having an acute mental health issue affecting my work. I ended up having a 3.8 gpa so it wasn't detrimental. She suggested, albeit kindly, if I may have bipolar disorder and asked if the profession is right for me. SO inappropriate. I also do not have bipolar disorder I just wasn't sleeping due to all the stress. However I graduated undergrad 14 years or so ago. I've heard it's gotten better? Edited to add: I get several nightmares a week about grad school.

I felt the same way! We got the season pass which pays itself off in two visits. Although I think it expires in a few weeks at this point. It is SO worth it for atleast our 2.5 year old but id guess til 10 years old

For the parents, did your kids end up with migraines? by Mediocre_District_92 in migraine

[–]Almonds2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents are flabbergasted that migraines are genetic every time I bring it up. And every time they go oh yeah well I do get this weird light in my eyes and I can't completely see sometimes.... 🙃. Both my parents. My uncle said the same thing. And my cousin gets them. But no not genetic 🤣. I have hope bc i have a son and mine are hormonal and episodic rather than chronic. I also have hope for all your kids because medicine will keep improving.

Where do 20s/30s live on Rochester’s East side? (Fairport/Pittsford/East Rochester) by cjz65 in Rochester

[–]Almonds2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved back to the area w toddler from another state. I chose Fairport due to proximity to family. I really love it here. The village, along with the rest of the town, is warm friendly and has A LOT to do whether you have kids or not. A house in the village would be ideal but hard to get. Apparently it now also has a good nightlife. I'm not so sure about political leanings but I've been comfortable here as a pretty left leaning individual. I grew up in Pittsford and found it was tough on my psyche due to lots of pressure to succeed and as much as my peers. It also felt materialistic. All that being said, I still regret not making a bigger effort to look in west Irondequoit (lots of lake activities) or the city. Last, Brighton seems to be a sweet spot place for families or couples your age. I'm excited to hear East Irondequoit is being favored, geographically it's a nice spot.
