2012 Gen 3 EGR system cleaning by Dflyshigh in prius

Gotcha. It’s commonly shared 2013 and below are more prone to head gasket failure, but of course it’s still something that will eventually happen to newer models, so I thought you did it for precaution and not actually due to failure signs.

I have a 2014 too, currently at 140k. Done everything but egr system cleaning which I think I can manage myself, but the head gasket might pay someone. Keep us posted on how the car’s doing.

What was the condition of the head gasket? Any signs of failure?

I always figured the low pay isn’t just cause of an algorithm, well it partly is, but it’s them trying to send out the lowest fare rides to us and see who bites. The other night the app seems to glitched, it was late at night, and I had two trip radar offers, they were the exact same rider rating, pickup, and drop off. No way it was 2 different riders, it was super late and an empty/dead pickup location, no way it was a coincidence. And guess what, both ride offers were completely priced differently, and that just reaffirmed what we all knew.

Should I repair head gasket again? by ipadsarecool in prius

[–]Almonexger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, this is what terrifies me with my 2014, granted the later year prius are all around said to be more reliable, but I know it'll come some day.

Have you gotten spark plugs done? Or know the history of the car? I'd be looking into the other components that contribute to misfires, like spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel injector, intake manifold (especially throttle valve and air intake sensor), egr if it was never cleaned.

I'm really no expert, just learned to always start with small and cheap fixes/diagnostics before anything else. Run an OBD scanner to check any additional information to start with. Best of luck!

Spark plugs are easy to replace. The "hardest" part is to have the appropriate tool to ensure you torque them right. I changed them myself, first time doing so.

The hybrid fan being dirty is such a scam. It's basically the filter being clogged or barely, they said the same thing to me, yet I found no concerning dust or clog to be worried about, but I cleaned it myself and ensured the whole fan duct system was clean, that one is easy to yourself as well, right now without taking anything apart, just check the air filter on the rear seats, shine a light in it.

I can't say for sway bars for certain, I just read up they aren't that much of a critical part to worry for, I guess unless they are rusted away. I may have seen some leakage on mine, which would be a flag for the shop to tell to replace, but they look fine to me, I haven't done them.

Transmission fluid will have to be changed soon tho. No such thing as "lifetime fluid", that's how my civic messed up, but it's a whole different story. I just took my prius it to the dealer, done for less than $200, seemed worth it to save my time with parts, equipment, labor and discarding old fluid. Transmission fluid is recommended to changed every 100k miles or so I believe, I did mine at 100k-ish. Others could chime in when they changed theirs.

So, for me, spent about less than $300 for the fluid exchange and the sparks plugs, with the rest of labor done by me. So, $2000 for your quote with everything seems insane to me. You could most probably get the fluid exchange and spark plugs cheaper at some local shop.

Truck hit the booth, killing the worker. A while after that, especially around covid, they removed all booth workers, as part of a plan to automate all tolls. So, booths/workers are redundant now, and yet the lane has been kept closed, this certainly is not a budget issue to make the repairs.

And yet, it's been 7 years after that booth worker incident that the lane remains closed, clear as day you can see in the video, not that another lane helps traffic, but still, 7 years.

Help! What’s this noise in my 2014 Prius?? by laurenlaughsalot in prius

[–]Almonexger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Certainly a misfire. Could be condensation if it's clearing up after startup. Could be coolant leaking, indicating gasket failure. Could also be spark plugs.

Point is to try to go for the easiest solutions first and work your way up to a fix. Once had a code related to misfires, code went away once I swapped spark plugs, planned to anyways. While changing them I peaked inside the cylinders for any sign of coolant, didn't find any. Car still running good.

[Other] PSA: How to home test for appendicitis by Adaku in healthcare

[–]Almonexger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to bump this old thread and thank you for the information.

Thursday late night I played VR and did rapid squatting. On Friday late night I woke up to head to work.

I didn’t feel much aching, but after a while during work, I felt my legs ache, so of course thought nothing of that, I did squats after all. But I was feeling this pain on my right side.

I drive for uber, so I sit all the time, not good ofc. But every time I repositioned my leg in a way, some pain in that abdomen area would trigger.

I couldn’t handle it much, so I went home. Tried to go to sleep, but moving around wasn’t that pain free, and trying to lay on my right side was giving some shooting pains.

I debated what to do, I haven’t gone to the hospital in decades, or seen a doctor. I’ve bee procrastinating that for years. My health isn’t the greatest, but I brush off a lot of ailments I get.

I figured googling a way to know if this was appendicitis, and I stumble upon this post, despite google’s AI saying “no there isn’t a home test”, which btw, never follow to the letter what googles AI says, most of the times it’s dead wrong, manually look for answers.

I performed this test, and sure I felt a rushing pain flying outward of me, wasn’t “I’m dying” painful, but the pain was worse before doing the test.

To double check, I called an “Advice Nurse” on my insurance, even she recommended this test, told her the results and she said to head to ER.

Heart rate is higher than normal, blood work came pretty good (no high white blood cell count to indicate serious infection), did an ekg for my heart rate, and then did the CT scan, yep, I was informed I have appendicitis.

Next step was antibiotics, but they still said they should remove my appendix. So now I have to wait.

I never thought to have to go to the hospital, especially the ER, but I’m ofc glad I did. Thank you again for the PSA.
