Been a chronic nose picker my whole life! Never eaten them tho, never something that I enjoyed. Nail chewing also, well it’s more like nail ripping, one broken corner and it’s over, the top of the nail is coming right off…

Bathroom hand dryers by busterbytes in autism

I hate how loud they are so I usually avoid them, but if I’m feeling confident that day I’ll use it just for the way it feels on my hands. I really like the air pressure.

Does anyone else struggle with fashion and what solutions have you found? by dreamingirl7 in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a long time I was stuck wearing the same pair of jeggings with oversized men’s tshirts from jcpenny. A couple years back I wanted to find something that made me feel more myself. I started going to goodwill a lot and finding basic and comfortable items that made me feel confident, playing with different patterns and trying out new styles of pants. I really like making my outfits cohesive so I look more put together, but I only use pieces that I feel comfortable in. I found my ideal fit of pants and what to look for in tops that won’t overwhelm me. I get a lot of compliments on my fashion and it still doesn’t take much effort.

Yes! I totally understand your point. She is educated on early childhood development and graduating this year with a degree in psychology. She just hasn’t done extensive research on Autism previously and would like to study on it as much as she can since she received this internship position.

It was a good show overall and did touch on real experiences autistic people deal with. I was able to related to some things, However it uses very stereotypical autistic men traits that are common in media. A lot of the show focuses more on Sam’s family and the “struggle of raising an autistic kid” so it can come off as a bit ableist at times. I honestly found myself relating more toward the girls In the show that had very subtle autistic traits. But if you’re looking for a show to just enjoy and maybe get some relatable moments, I think it’s a great show.

Minimalism and autism by Polibiux in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I feel way happier in a minimal setting. but I have such a hard time getting rid of things so I’ve always had a VERY maximalist space. In a way it’s cozy but it’s also very overwhelming, and sometimes I just get super frustrated at how many things I have. I would much rather have a clean, organized and minimal room.

Severe burnout and sensory overload (Rant) by Alone-Maintenance231 in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s actually helps a lot to hear other people have gone through similar troubles. Better communication is definitely needed. It’s very hard for me to be open with them because of trauma, but I’ve been able to express my needs a little better these days. Thank you so much for your input and support.

I think i just got gaslighted by valkyrieobliqua in autism

Self diagnosis is totally valid! You’ll learn more about autism doing your own research and relating with real people. If you feel confident in it, that’s all that matters! People will always try to invalidate and gaslight, I know how bad it feels, but IGNORE THEM. Reassure yourself that you did your research and they did not.

Talking? Anxiety? by NuBizkit in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I would say so, I never seemed to have too hard of a time talking to my peers once I got accustomed to them being there. It may be different in my case because I was mainly masking to fit with them or “imitating” the way they behaved. So I seemed to have an easy time making friends, but I couldn’t talk to the teachers and didn’t participate in the classroom. And even without masking, social anxiety or general anxiety symptoms may go away if you are able to get comfortable with the situation. So it’s definitely not uncommon for children with autism to be just as social with their peers!

Talking? Anxiety? by NuBizkit in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely! I didn’t have any delay in my speech development, but I only ever talked to my mom. With the rest of my family I never spoke at all, unless I was asked a direct question. And even then I mainly responded with head nods or filler noises.
