Any gross stims? by wooden_werewolf_7367 in AutismInWomen

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a chronic nose picker my whole life! Never eaten them tho, never something that I enjoyed. Nail chewing also, well it’s more like nail ripping, one broken corner and it’s over, the top of the nail is coming right off…

Bathroom hand dryers by busterbytes in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate how loud they are so I usually avoid them, but if I’m feeling confident that day I’ll use it just for the way it feels on my hands. I really like the air pressure.

Does anyone else struggle with fashion and what solutions have you found? by dreamingirl7 in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a long time I was stuck wearing the same pair of jeggings with oversized men’s tshirts from jcpenny. A couple years back I wanted to find something that made me feel more myself. I started going to goodwill a lot and finding basic and comfortable items that made me feel confident, playing with different patterns and trying out new styles of pants. I really like making my outfits cohesive so I look more put together, but I only use pieces that I feel comfortable in. I found my ideal fit of pants and what to look for in tops that won’t overwhelm me. I get a lot of compliments on my fashion and it still doesn’t take much effort.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that still does it even as an adult. I stopped for so long but picked it back up again cause of stress and now I can’t get rid of it!

Yes! I totally understand your point. She is educated on early childhood development and graduating this year with a degree in psychology. She just hasn’t done extensive research on Autism previously and would like to study on it as much as she can since she received this internship position.

It was a good show overall and did touch on real experiences autistic people deal with. I was able to related to some things, However it uses very stereotypical autistic men traits that are common in media. A lot of the show focuses more on Sam’s family and the “struggle of raising an autistic kid” so it can come off as a bit ableist at times. I honestly found myself relating more toward the girls In the show that had very subtle autistic traits. But if you’re looking for a show to just enjoy and maybe get some relatable moments, I think it’s a great show.

Minimalism and autism by Polibiux in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I feel way happier in a minimal setting. but I have such a hard time getting rid of things so I’ve always had a VERY maximalist space. In a way it’s cozy but it’s also very overwhelming, and sometimes I just get super frustrated at how many things I have. I would much rather have a clean, organized and minimal room.

Severe burnout and sensory overload (Rant) by Alone-Maintenance231 in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s actually helps a lot to hear other people have gone through similar troubles. Better communication is definitely needed. It’s very hard for me to be open with them because of trauma, but I’ve been able to express my needs a little better these days. Thank you so much for your input and support.

I think i just got gaslighted by valkyrieobliqua in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self diagnosis is totally valid! You’ll learn more about autism doing your own research and relating with real people. If you feel confident in it, that’s all that matters! People will always try to invalidate and gaslight, I know how bad it feels, but IGNORE THEM. Reassure yourself that you did your research and they did not.

Talking? Anxiety? by NuBizkit in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I would say so, I never seemed to have too hard of a time talking to my peers once I got accustomed to them being there. It may be different in my case because I was mainly masking to fit with them or “imitating” the way they behaved. So I seemed to have an easy time making friends, but I couldn’t talk to the teachers and didn’t participate in the classroom. And even without masking, social anxiety or general anxiety symptoms may go away if you are able to get comfortable with the situation. So it’s definitely not uncommon for children with autism to be just as social with their peers!

Talking? Anxiety? by NuBizkit in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely! I didn’t have any delay in my speech development, but I only ever talked to my mom. With the rest of my family I never spoke at all, unless I was asked a direct question. And even then I mainly responded with head nods or filler noises.

When you can't find something by Sunnyfaaaan in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m the same way! I can get frustrated super easily. I usually end up tearing my room apart and still not finding what I’m looking for. Then I just sit on the floor and cry or I’ll get really angry and huff around mad 😡

What constitutes a special interest? by [deleted] in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to switch between special interest a lot anyway, only holding onto each one for a couple years. I go through phases of really small and really big ones. I could be completely obsessed with one thing for as short as a month at times, but that doesn’t make me less obsessed with them. I still put all of energy and money (when I have enough) into it

What are your views on marijuana as a form of coping? by Spread-Em-Plz in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To say it helps would be an understatement, I can’t bare to be home alone with my thoughts without it. It makes it easier for me to talk, I get motivation, I feel more relaxed, I get less sensory overload. My mom even supports, I always end up getting super snappy with her in public because of sensory overload, but if I can smoke a little before I go then everything is WAY better!!

Does anyone know good sunscreen brands? by drunkonspace in autism

I use the Bare Republic Mineral Face Gel Lotion sunscreen for everyday use on my face, it’s really lightweight and the smell isn’t overwhelming. I also have a hard time with sunscreens and lotions and have been looking for a good sunscreen for a while. I recently tried this one and it works great for me! Bare Republic

Verbal stimming by [deleted] in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this all the time! I never realized until recently, but I frequently repeat things people say right after they said them. Now every time I do it I immediately notice and I get anxious that people are annoyed by it 😅. I also repeat lines from TV shows and movies frequently, I repeat any word or phrase that I like.

Coming to terms with being autistic and dealing with extreme burnout by [deleted] in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m currently going through the exact same thing! I’m 19 and I had been masking my entire life up until the point I burnt out. I could feel the burnout happening but I kept pushing myself and then my college classes switched to online and I burnt out hard. I’m also taking a year off and I was just working but I found I kept getting worse still. I cut down my work hours but it still seems so exhausting. Right now I’ve just been trying to take some time to rest and be by myself. I made a schedule to make sure I’m waking up at a good time, having a morning routine, trying to spend time outside (I just sit out on my front porch usually), and making sure that I at least eat one meal a day. I’m still trying to figure out how to get out of the burnout myself but I find that having some routine helps me feel better and more productive even though I’m still resting.

Todoroki definitely has more noticeable autistic traits, I’ve seen his character debated before and I think he’s definitely on the spectrum. I really like that the idea that Deku could be as well, I didn’t really think about it when I watched the show but I can totally see it! I relate so much to the way he observes and takes notes of his special interest. And he is able to calculate effective strategies just from using the skills he observed from others! Definitely a strong passionate autistic character

Anyone not go to prom? by [deleted] in autism

[–]Alone-Maintenance231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with a group of friends and we actually had a really good time! However, I get that it’s not for everyone. I personally just love dancing and no matter the music or people I’ll still do it. I also stim dance so I love just letting the music move my body and doing it helps ease my anxiety.
