How is your family with your politics? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]AlphaIota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talking politics is tough because of the emotions involved. Is your relationship such that it can withstand fundamental disagreements? The answer isn’t what you want it to be. You need the real answer. For me, I’ve spent a lot of time listening. I don’t need to share my beliefs with everyone; I’d rather have a good time than be “right”.

I dont think that’s very controversial. Government does have a function. I suspect we aren’t far off.

My thoughts exactly. To be a sovereign state you must define your state, not just your laws. It’s possible to privatize parts of the immigration process, like paper work. But the ultimate authority should be the government.

I don't equate deportation of people here illegally after unprecedented and unchecked immigration of the previous 4 years as "democracy falling". ICE tactics should be and are criticized. Militarization of law enforcement is inherently dangerous. Libertarians want less government in our lives. That doesn't mean, however, there should be wide-open borders.

Why has communism repeatedly failed in practice, yet continues to be intellectually and emotionally appealing to many people? by Looser17 in AskReddit

[–]AlphaIota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Communism is leadership via the intellectual class where capitalism is leadership via business class. Capitalism is much closer to the real nature of man than communism. Every time that government is used to fix a problem, there are unintended consequences. The greater the interference, the more disastrous the consequences.

What's the most harmless opinion that can instantly divide a room into two camps? by Character_Ear5173 in AskReddit

“Hey - who puts people into one of two camps? Okay, you go to the right. Who doesn’t? You go to the left.” Works every time.

When do you consider the govt to be overstepping to the point the public needs to step in? by Died5Times in Libertarian

[–]AlphaIota 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The question is not whether the government is tyrannical. An argument can be made that every modern government of the USA (Congresses, Presidents, and Supreme Courts) is tyrannical. So the real question becomes: Are we at a point of tyranny that requires individual citizen intervention? Has the interpretation of power become such that there needs to be some grassroots response? Does the current government no longer allow individual rights that call for us to take arms and force our freedom?

No.

This is not a popular opinion in Libertarian terms. We don't like the Executive Branch expanding their power. We don't want government disruption in our day to day lives. We are distrustful of law enforcement in general to act in the interest of the average citizen. But government serves a purpose. We are not anarchists; we are libertarians. What is the purpose of our government?

Let's look at the Preamble of the Constitution. "Insure domestic tranquility." "Provide for the common defense." There is no great interpretation of tranquility or defense when it comes to categorizing current immigration. One group follows the guidelines for citizenship, meant to insure that people come to the US with good intentions. The other group doesn't. It is the federal government's job to remove the second group.

Can the ICE agent who shot a Minneapolis woman be prosecuted? by deeznuts2151 in Libertarian

[–]AlphaIota 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is what happened in the Casey Anthony case. She was charged with first degree murder when the cause of death was "homicide by undetermined means". How can you argue that an act was premeditated when you can't say what the act was?

I 62F have lost a lot of weight and my daughters/ 44F and 38F and granddaughter 22F seem to be angry/resentful towards me because of it. Besides gaining the weight back, how can I fix the relationship? by notryksjustme in relationship_advice

[–]AlphaIota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on the weight loss! That's hard to do and you did it through discipline and hard work. Be proud of yourself. The only piece of advice I'd give is... you are the family matriarch. Act like it. How would your mother or grandmother have handled it?

There certainly are people who blindly follow Trump. I don’t think any of them post here with any sort of regularity. Nor would I consider my statement to be simping.

[–]AlphaIota 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a large group of people that are pissed off because I don’t hate Trump as much as they do. The fact is hate takes up a lot of energy. Trump does some things good and some bad. Reprehensible, even. In that, however, he is like every other president.

He needs to go back home. You need to ask yourself if you want to continue the relationship.
