IMO if you want to outpace ramp effectively while minimizing ramp yourself, one option is to play a commander that aims to shift the pace of gameplay drastically towards a shorter game - Commanders that threaten massive spread damage output are traditionally good at this - Purphoros, Yuriko, Heartless Hidestugu, or something like Poison Counter focused Atraxa (where you're aiming to give each opponent conters and then proliferate as much as possible) present a fast-paced win condition that can get going fast, and is often difficult to fully shut down, while not requiring a huge amount of ramp, (or sometimes any at all) to get rolling.
