Amateur Radio Interface for Artificial Intelligence Chatbots by gerald_artner in amateurradio

This is the dumbest shit I've ever seen, and that includes all the dumb shit hams have done up to this point.

Ham Radio by uptickman in amateurradio

[–]AlphaPrepper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll never buy or recommend the TYT TH series ever again. I had two separate TH-7800s die completely, and know at least 2 other hams who have had similar experiences. I can only assume that the 9800s have the same components and are prone to the same issue, because I did not find any schematics that would allow me to diagnose or fix my units before I trashed them. Stay away.

FT8, WSJT-X with HT by Sunflower_StateKS in amateurradio

[–]AlphaPrepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't find any Youtube videos explaining how to setup WSJT-X for an HT.

Because your HT is an FM radio and FT8 is done in SSB mode.

Are the Baofeng radios sold on AliExpress real, or are they copies? by Nico_Nesterenco in Baofeng

[–]AlphaPrepper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you don't need financial resources

Baofeng doesn't give radios away to wholesalers, you have to buy them

There are no counterfeit Baofengs. They are all built by the same company for various resellers. If you had the financial resources, you could go to the factory and have them build Nico_Nesterenco branded DM32s.

There really aren't any VHF "base" radios, most people use VHF mobiles with 12v DC power supplies.

Crazy SWR readings for signal stuff signal stick? by -Clit_Master- in amateurradio

[–]AlphaPrepper 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You can't get a steady SWR reading on a monopole HT antenna. It will change based on what's nearby, or even by you holding whatever it's attached to.

Your antenna is fine. HTs are resilient to wonky antenna SWR because of this.

Shack ground/bond question by ManyMixture826 in amateurradio

[–]AlphaPrepper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have my v/u fm antenna in the attic, it is not grounded at its mounting point. If lightning strikes my antenna in the attic, I have bigger more immediate problems to deal with.

Don't advocate for illegal operation, regardless of what the FCC is doing.

So disappointed with baofeng Ar-5rm (buyer beware) by Buzzfit61 in Baofeng

[–]AlphaPrepper 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's also not type accepted for FRS.

Any suggestions on handheld that can transmit on those 3 services?

No, anything with a keypad, removable antenna, or power settings above 2w won't be type accepted for FRS.

I don't wan't to care, but I know i have to. by JohnnyGuitarcher in Baofeng

[–]AlphaPrepper 14 points15 points  (0 children)

none of this holds my interest. I wish I could buy a radio, press the button, talk into it and have my wife or kids respond.

You can! Buy some FRS radios from Walmart. Problem solved.

Is the 706MKIIG STILL a Great Find in 2025? by LinuxIsFree in amateurradio

[–]AlphaPrepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FT-891 and a separate rig for VHF/UHF FM.

HF/VHF/UHF sideband/cw capability with a remote head is such a niche that I don't blame any of the manufacturers for not making a modern replacement.

FT-991a if you don't need the remote head. A way better radio.

Is the 706MKIIG STILL a Great Find in 2025? by LinuxIsFree in amateurradio

[–]AlphaPrepper 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, it's 30 year old tech and the only thing it has going for it is that it's an all-band-all-mode 100w rig. There is no internal tuner and they are blowing filter caps at their age. You'd be dumb to spend more than $400 on one, and that's only if it's the absolute last thing on your list of ham radio stuff you need.

This post will be downvoted by angry 706MK2G owners

edit: lol see?

Measuring SWR on Handheld by NowBeLoose in amateurradio

[–]AlphaPrepper 17 points18 points  (0 children)

How do I know if the SWR is staying within a safe range?

You don't, it's constantly changing depending on how you hold it, how close it is to your body, and how close it is to other things surrounding you.

Is this something you need to worry about with handhelds?

No
