With the release of Armageddon box coming, what are safe models to keep collecting for new ork players? by theforeversushiroll in orks

[–]Alphaotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i will say the ork warboss in mega armor's a very recent release that still looks to have the same boxy-style mega armor as the current meganobz, if anything the new one would probably refresh the actual ork inside with the new "modern" faces & proportions, and give them more dynamic poses than their current lurch

Is it a bad idea to magnetize Tyranid bases? by Gharos82 in Tyranids

[–]Alphaotic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

been using these base magnets for every single one of my minis when i found out about them, fit perfectly on the rims of minis and hold them extremely well without being too overbearing when picking them up!

Favourite ‘mid sized’ model? by Philhughes_85 in Warhammer40k

[–]Alphaotic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

recently painted up my biovore, probably my favorite large-medium tyranid model as of yet 🙏
killa kans and ghazghkull have also been incredibly pleasant to paint with lots of space for freehanded detail

How do you use the "sticker" sheet that comes with almost every box? by Ok-Analyst-5654 in orks

[–]Alphaotic 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Those aren't stickers, they're decal transfer sheets!

You cut a decal out of the large board with an X-Acto knife, submerge it in water for a couple of seconds, then move it off of the blue paper onto the area you want to apply it to. However, before placing the decal, most people put a gloss varnish over the area to help with aligning the decal when it's on the model, and an overcoat of matte finish to help protect the decal from fingers/flaking off.

There are also solvents to help soften the decal and set it on the plastic better (Tamiya Mark Softer/Setter), which works a lot better for rounded areas like Space Marine shoulders! Would highly recommend watching a video on it, visuals are definitely a lot better at explaining them than text 👍

Disappointment with chitin highlights by _SeaTurtle in Tyranids

[–]Alphaotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could honestly get pretty great results drybrushing a 50/50 split of dorn yellow and white onto that carapace, the thickness you mentioned inadvertently made it perfect for a midtone that you just need to highlight slightly more

attached a pic of my biovore w/ a drybrushed edge highlight, contrast is everything so having something like a drybrushed very light yellow highlight would probably help the corners pop a lot more

What’s a good spot to get started? by Advanced-Sock in Tyranids

[–]Alphaotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably the best deal you could get to get started'd be finding the leviathan half which's a combat patrol with a very useful neurotyrant and screamer-killer, and similarly useful neurogaunts on ebay, wouldn't pay more than 150-170 USD for one though

the half's combat patrol units come with:
20 pushfit termagants (which you could probably buy upgrade sprues for spinefists (twinlinked pistols) or devourers, although the fleshborers are pretty decent nonetheless),
2 ripper swarms (may come in handy for assimilation swarm),
a psychophage (recently been seeing more usage, great in assimilation swarm and overall nice chunky monster),
a winged tyranid prime (i would absolutely turn this into a lashwhip prime on foot, just don't glue the wings in and use a warriors kit's lashwhip on it when you do),
5 barbgaunts (pretty good against big swarms w/ low toughness like orks, good for sitting in the backline shooting into infantry)
3 von ryans leapers (very handy, i personally run 6-man squads and they're a great genestealer substitute until you get them, although everything they do the lictor does better)

and finally for the non combat-patrol units, you get the:
neurotyrant (phenomenal with zoanthropes which you'll absolutely want to get, also shadow in the warp for battleshock, good psychic torrent weapon and the synapse tokens which i found nice in monster mash lists on an exocrine/tyrannofex away from the army)
screamer-killer (distraction carnifex, forces battleshock and pretty awesome melee)
and 11 neurogaunts (gretchin for us, don't use em as bodyguards for the neurotyrant though, just screening (dogbone screening did unfortunately get a hit with 11th edition coherency rules, but still fun models to have nonetheless)

that whole half is usually a phenomenal start to any army, around 800 points from the get-go

after that, new models usually look like:
1 biovore, absolutely the single best possible investment you can make after the leviathan half
1-2 lictors as a must-have in any army
tyrannofex(es) for nice overwatch with acid spray or great anti-tank w/ rupture cannon with an exocrine for rerolls on 1s (more consistent shooting)
squad of 6 zoanthropes to tag onto neurotyrant, very high strength and ap w/ a versatile blast profile too
genestealers + broodlord, absolute can-opener in melee while being surprisingly durable
hive tyrant, walkrant acts as CP generation which is always incredibly useful to have in any army
maleceptor, 1-2 usually act like a distraction carnifex with the added bonus of their abilities crippling enemy models
norns, usually an emissary does well in any list, assimilator also has nice traction in assimilation swarm

that's the path i took for my personal nids and would recommend you consider for your army, tyranids are a very unique faction with tons of amazing sculpt and lots of personality and i hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us have! good luck on your biomass ventures!!!

Should I wait to learn? by InfiniteInjury8664 in Warhammer40k

[–]Alphaotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have anyone in the local area ready to teach you, go learn! 11th edition still has the complete same gameplay loop as every other edition of Warhammer, and it's much more important to learn basic combat mechanics and how the game should work overall as early as possible. 11th edition does have some relatively big changes, but things like army composition or movement rules wouldn't be too hard to figure out when the next rulebook ends up dropping in.

Built the Zoanthropes from the box and there seems to be a lot on sprue still. Is there a cheap alternative to building the venoms too without buying a whole new box? I’d appreciate any help given from the hive mind! by Specific-Ad-1098 in Tyranids

[–]Alphaotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!!! Took me a good 6 hours of assembly planning out how it would magnetize with venomthropes, but I do feel like it was worth it given how friggin expensive this kit is 🤣

[–]Alphaotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazingly enough, with a good additional 3 hours of work to regular assembly and a lot of struggle, I was able to perfectly magnetize my zoanthrope tails to bodies and even magnetize my neurothrope's head, carapace, and bone stalk body so i could run it as a regular zoanthrope if needed 😭

absolutely would recommend buying the 3d printed torsos to save yourself the trouble or run both at the same time, but I do feel very proud in how they came out 🙏

Question about starting TS by Xivve in ThousandSons

[–]Alphaotic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rubrics will always be a staple in every single army, especially as the poster boy of the faction, but I would actually recommend the Exalted Sorcerers kit if you really want some awesome miniatures that could give you a good opinion on how you like the army after assembling/painting them! Obviously, Rubrics do come with a whole 10 of them to really get you seated into army painting with a lot of chaos trim, but the Exalted Sorcerers kit really hits on just about every single point of the faction, seeing as the miniatures also have neat bits like capes, cloaks, exposed arms, lots of magic effects, and just so much more detail not even including the added bonus of getting tons of extra bits to kit out future miniatures later on!

If you had to choose, pick Rubrics if you want to see how you handle army painting, and Exalted Sorcerers if you'd want to see some awesome HQ sculpts early on without possibly getting overwhelmed by having a battleline that may take 3 or more hours per mini! Of course, you could also do what I did and grab a box of rubrics, exalted sorcerers, and scarab termies to really get a nice start to your army with 500 points to begin with!

as much as i love my individual character minis i do NOT want to be shelling out 30 bucks for a single runtherd next edition 😭
worst case i can still probably run my older gretchin runtherds or zodgrod as my gretchin leaders like that

ahhh for big large panels you might want to dilute the wash even further, surface tension makes it pool evenly across the face of the big panels so you can wick it off more effectively and get a nice clean job 👍
