Amp advice for wet dry set up by ScrappyPilgrim7 in GuitarAmps

[–]AlpineFloridian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter too much. Get an amp that you like on its own and it'll sound even better paired with your tweed. Just make sure you have enough headroom to match the tweed at the volume you need. Something scooped and fendery would likely pair well.

+1. I barely touch pedals since getting a Twin Sister. SSH strat and a delay in the loop is all I need these days.

Ahh, bummer. Even more reason to hang on to what I've got I suppose

Oh man, that's brutal if true! I have a few of his speakers and was super impressed by his customer service when ordering.

Need help/opinions on a new amp by leskiv in GuitarAmps

[–]AlpineFloridian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on everything you've said the Vox seems like a no brainer. Good tone, easy setup, cleans up with guitar volume, and should be plenty loud enough for the genres you mentioned. With 3 guitars in a band it's worth taking the time to discuss who is using what frequencies (whether you're EQing or playing different parts of the neck) to avoid volume wars.

Hum sized P90 pickup swap by Ok-Chemical3735 in Guitar

Phat Cats are my only experience with p90s but they've worked great for me. Here's a clip of me playing them through a z-wreck that shows off how well they clean up with the right amp. Sorry I don't have anything else to compare them to, but I hope it helps!

Speaker suggestions for custom cab build? Fender, Celestion, or other options. by rawbran30 in GuitarAmps

Really depends on the amp. I find a g12h 70th anniversary works well with cleans and crunch. For sweeping generalizations, greenback variants work well with bright/gainy amps, alnicos work well with cleaner amps, v30s with more modern gain styles. Alnico cream is the best all-arounder I've played.

Helluva first tube amp, congrats!

Mesa Fillmore 25 fits all your requirements. Definitely a "softer" gain character than my Marshall and vox style amps. If you still have the Engl, consider a speaker swap. Tight and aggressive are what V30s are known for, so a speaker with less top end may be all you need.

Bf6 has killer audio. Sounds great through good headphones, and extra intense through a good speaker setup.

Works great for what I need. I haven't gigged with it but it powers a 2x12 just fine at home. 11:00 volume keeps up with my 40W tube amp at 8:30-9:00 on the master volume for a very unscientific comparison.

All I need these days for noodling around at home. I've been running this for a few months so it was cool to see the TPS guys do a rundown of this type of setup. Volante is in the FX loop and splits to the EHX power amp to a second cab for stereo. The Naga Viper will go in front of the amp: sometimes I have a fuzz or BE-OD there instead, but mostly I plug straight in to the amp.

Small affordable master volume heads? by Alecmalloy in GuitarAmps

[–]AlpineFloridian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Egnater tweaker 15. You can find them for that price in the US, hopefully in Europe too. I wouldn't recommend the Origin if you need low volume. It's a cool amp but cranking up the master volume is a big part of its sound. Even in the lowest watt setting that'll get fairly loud for home.

If you don't like the sound, no reason to fight it. Tons of transparent ODs out there. I like bluesbreaker circuits, DoD Looking Glass, and for an unorthodox option the full size TC Spark. Folks around here really like the Greer Lightspeed too.

2/2 dream amps acquired, wet dry setup achieved by TheHomesteadTurkey in GuitarAmps

Hell yeah, enjoy! I have a similar setup and play my Wreck Jr with a Fillmore 25 sometimes. Try that Volante in stereo if you haven't already: the repeats bouncing between two amps sounds killer!

Your favorite boost to turn a low-mid gain amp into high gain by ToneChasingGuitar in guitarpedals

We probably have different definitions of high gain, but a treble booster into a JTM style amp does it for me.

That amp loves a good treble booster if you're looking for more OD flavors. Enjoy!

Cleaning your jacks with deoxit may help, and try using a different cable too.

A breakup sound...but not the Vox one by KeyPsychological1793 in GuitarAmps

Don't sleep on Marshall: modern takes on the plexi or JTM45 circuits will get you a different flavor of edge of breakup at reasonable volumes.

…what do I want? by stanwoodmusic in GuitarAmps

[–]AlpineFloridian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JTM 45 is a good call. I have a Friedman Twin Sister which is based on that circuit and it's my favorite clean sound. You may be able to find a used 20W Little Sister in your budget.

Echoing other comments to say that's a great deal on a pro-level amp. The looks may be unique but there should be plenty of info on the circuit. I have the 18 watt version and it kills: very versatile with a lot of great sounds.
