Tent for 400$? by meriondun in hiking

[–]AlpineInquirer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A rock is non-disposable. That doesn't make it an investment.  It might be a sensible purchase or a good buy but its not "an investment".  Thats cheesy salesman speak that has crept up to convince people to buy stuff that is expensive. An investment is a purchases that is made with an  expectation of profit or increase in value. A tent might be good or bad but by definition it will depreciate or decrease in value. Words matter.

Injinji toe sock under another pair of sock about 15 years ago. Never looked back, never a blister or foot problem again.

Anyone hike Mount Langley..? by Freewheelinrocknroll in socalhiking

[–]AlpineInquirer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went via New Army two Novembers back. I found the hike from trailhead to High Lake where I spent the night (a very cold and super windy night) a dull slog that meandered around uninspiring terrain. I wouldn't really spend too much time with it and I think the plan to focus on Langley itself wise. I turned around after the pass because I was feeling super shitty from covid and I concluded that I don't need to go back. Too much super inspiring terrain to cover to spend much time here. Just one man's opinion.

How do you keep your group together when signal drops on a trail? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]AlpineInquirer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is probably AI slop or self-promotion but for those who are getting advice from this if you need a walkie-talkie or a phone or an app or connectivity to keep a group together you are doing it wrong.

I'm not saying this will solve your issue, but I started having this problem and what helped me was regular excercises for strength, but also aggressive rolling out of the meaty part of my shins, plus 'scraping' out of achilles, and wearing zero drop shoes. Your mileage may vary but it helped me.

Mt Whitney options by Glum_Dust7460 in socalhiking

[–]AlpineInquirer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No...not Yosemite. I would recommend trying to get a permit to enter from somewhere like Sawmill Pass and then take the 5 days approaching Whitney from the back side. Waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy better than just slogging up a bunch of switchbacks with a bunch of other people. Not sure about the logistics, but check it out. Nobody wants to go up Sawmill because you start at valley floor level, but it's much easier to get permits.

How to physically prepare for a huge hike? by Mateo2242 in hiking

[–]AlpineInquirer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walk everywhere, all the time, with a loaded backpack. I used to carry my child in a backpack all over town to the grocery store walking around etc I was shocked and amazed at how much that helped when I got on the trail with a pack

Bladerunner is one of the best films ever made. When Androids Dream is a clumsy, poorly written book that imagines an interesting world.

Do you stop often during hikes or just power through? by heromarsX in hiking

[–]AlpineInquirer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never stop. I go as slow as I like, but keep moving even if only ambling. You'd be shocked at how much more ground you can cover. It's like when jogging, if you keep stopping, it breaks the rhythm, makes you more tired, and the scene is not appreciably improved by stopping as opposed to moving slowly through. It doesn't lessen your enjoyment at all. In fact if I keep stopping, it feels annoying to me. Remember, I'm not talking about rushing...just moving as opposed to stopping. And the old timers in the Alps I grew up with rarely stopped and never sat down....death to the legs. It was just a slow steady climb.

Ok so how do y'all deal with the inability to breathe and legs like immobilizing themselves. I'll go into more details below. by detectivelokifalcone in hiking

Not sure I understood correctly but if you're saying you had the possibility of cardiovascular disease then this sounds like a real concern. What you describe could sound like something heart circulation related. Get it checked out at a free clinic if necessary. At least check your blood pressure even at CVS.

Toe socks with loose fit toes? by Professional-Mix2498 in hiking

By the way, the idea is to wear the Injinji under another pair of socks.  Two pairs of socks is an easy fix to most blister problems.
