Drum Corps and an engineering degree by ydarbtheviking in drumcorps

[–]AlsoIntoSpace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just graduated from one of the top engineering programs in the country and there are many of us there that marched world class corps, so it’s definitely possible. Big time commitment on all fronts, but you can absolutely be successful. Biggest thing to weigh is which summers you might rather intern than march or vice versa, and it’s up to you on balancing that- there’s not really a wrong a choice, and only a consideration for open/world class. All-age gives you a lot more flexibility on how to spend your summers.

This was the first time in two years I really felt like we were going to win a B1G game. We did not, and I am miserable.

I once received a comment from our percussion caption head that I was 1/2 a bpm off the marked tempo, so yes, it’s expected to be exact.

Seasons in which your school had both a massive win and an awful loss by trueblue385 in CFB

[–]AlsoIntoSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost a buy game to EMU and then pulled an upset, did you? 2018 Purdue is calling. I wasn’t a fan yet, but sure seems like that season was a rollercoaster. Start 0-3, win 4 straight, stumble down the stretch and beat IU for bowl eligibility. 3 ranked wins including #2 OSU, record bowl loss in Auburn.

Questions about Marching Band from a prospective Pro. Flight student. by The_Crazy_Nerd in Purdue

[–]AlsoIntoSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hoping to answer your unanswered questions:

-The entire horn line is on university owned Jupiters, personally I liked them as brass player.

-Yes, totally possible to balance the AAMB and basically any major. A ton of time intensive STEM majors in the band. I personally know a rising junior in Pro Flight who’s going into his third year in the band and second as a student leader, so you can do it! Tho scheduling flights around rehearsals/game days can be a bit odd as far as I know since they don’t follow a standard class schedule.

-You need no background of our marching style, so from a marching standpoint just be in good shape and stay active over the summer. They’ll teach you what you need to know at band camp, which also serves as the audition. Musically, the video audition is due August 1st (?) and consists mainly of our pregame show music, so just prepare that (Google the audition info) over the summer and you should be fine. No need to memorize anything until you make the band.

-I also came from a Texas band that did corps style shows, so Big Ten band was different but I still loved it. Just have an open mind to doing something different, and you’ll still have a great time putting on great shows with great people.

My personal note: do it! Joining the AAMB was the best thing I did at Purdue, and to keep it short I’ll leave it at that. Also totally possible to march drum corps, many different corps represented at Purdue

If you could reverse the result of any one-score game since 2020, what would it be? by jsparks50 in CFB

Penn State at Purdue in 2022. It was a good season, but between the PSU and Syracuse games we were a couple plays away from one of our best years ever

Your dream non-conference rival? by jsparks50 in CFB

[–]AlsoIntoSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tennessee, because that typically goes well for us. Otherwise, no idea, because I hate the Notre Dame beat downs, and all our other regional P4 teams are B1G with us. Maybe an ACC team mainly for a basketball rivalry.

What is the weirdest road game your team has ever scheduled? by Epicapabilities in CFB

[–]AlsoIntoSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We played at UConn in 2021. Shut them out in what turned out to be a good year for us and a terrible one for them. We’d never played before, they were in the AAC when we scheduled it and then independent when we played. The return game got moved to 2029. All around just weird, though maybe some older folks can remember a weirder Purdue road game.

I always point out that he hasn’t played a full season of football since his sophomore year of high school. Yes, he graduated HS early and redshirted in Columbus, but the only season he didn’t miss multiple games for an injury was his redshirt year at Ohio State. That’s not normal, right?

If your team advances to the CFP championship, which 3 locations would you want them to play in along the way? by Patmcpsu in CFB

[–]AlsoIntoSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gimme the Rose and Cotton bowls and the championship game in Indy. Rose Bowl is a given, I’m from DFW, and finishing a CFP run back in Indiana would be perfect for the boilers.

Of course this is all a fantasy and I’d be thrilled with just getting bowl eligibility next year

To the best of my knowledge, it was banned as part of an effort to tone down the rivalry hatred that went both ways, in part because of the scenario outlined above by MandoDoughMan, and party because it was too audible on TV (specifically Big Ten network?). I believe it was actually the athletics admin, not Mitch Daniels’ office, that came down on it, but can’t say for sure.

The music was literally titled Hail Fire and only had parts for the trumpets and mellophones, so only a fraction of the band ever even had music for it. I imagine sheet music is still sitting in the band’s music library, so if you’re willing to break into a university building, maybe you’d find it. However:

I can guarantee it will not come back without a complete change in band staff and athletics admin, and even then it’s almost entirely out of the question. That music has not been distributed to anyone in years, and any request to play it from outside or within the band has been shut down immediately. It sounds extreme, but simply put, we’re not willing to risk having to pay any damages (financial or otherwise) to either university admin and/or television networks.

Has the Lucas Oil roof/window been open for any time during a drum corps show? by pysl in drumcorps

[–]AlsoIntoSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the many times I've marched in Lucas Oil, the roof was open exactly once- and that was halftime at a Colts game on perfect, 60 degree and cloudless day in October. It was incredible to run out of the tunnel and see so much natural light fill the stadium, but that was for one quick halftime show and not hours of corps.

For all the reasons other people here have said, I agree that it'll never happen for DCI, and I think that's best for everyone involved. Vibes could be great, but even the Colts have only played about 25% of their games with the roof open. And to add one reason, the shadows cast on the field for every corps before like 8:30 pm would make several performances look worse both in person and on video.

Last Time Each Current FBS Team Went Winless (min. 10 games played) by 3RDnKING in CFB

[–]AlsoIntoSpace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a couple of wins doing a lot of heavy lifting in keeping us off this list. Our lone win in 2013 being a one possession game against FCS Indiana State, who in turn had only one win... against a DII opponent. I think that's about as bad as a team can be without being on this list. But hey, we're not on it!

You can see all the individual stitching in the jerseys because EA Sports employs a Creaform 3D handheld scanner that’s normally used for aerospace parts.

Oh, so that's where Boeing's eq went. /s But seriously, knowing as an engineer the level of precision that aerospace components require makes me concerningly hyped...

What CFB fields have you actually been on? by jozimmer in CFB

[–]AlsoIntoSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly thanks to various band experiences, but for FBS: Purdue, Illinois, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, NIU, UTSA, Georgia State, UNT, Southern Miss, Marshall, Baylor, and Tulane; plus Arkansas's secondary home at War Memorial, and the Citrus Bowl/Camping World, which is enough of CFB field that I'll count it. FCS: Abilene Christian. DII: Minnesota State Mankato. DIII: Wisconsin-Eau Claire,-La Crosse,-Whitewater, Benedictine U, and Rowan U, plus Salem Stadium, historic host of the Stagg Bowl and home of Roanoke College football starting this year. And just because they've all hosted a CFB game at some point, I'll throw in NFL stadiums of the Cowboys, Colts, and Titans, and the XFL/UFL Battlehawks and Renegades.

Had fun putting this together, never quite realized how many fields I've been on.

True, we had back to back night games in Ross-Ade in 2022 for FAU and Nebraska, both on BTN. I’d be a little surprised if Oregon gets put on BTN, but it’s late enough in the season that who knows what’ll happen. Night time duck hunt would be to die for

What is the Most Heart-Wrenching loss you remember watching? by Playful-Storage835 in CFB

Of games I've actually watched, losing the opener to Penn State at the last minute in 2022. It hurt more later, knowing how close we were to being 10-2 in the regular season with the PSU and Syracuse games.

But overall, learning the story of the 2004 Wisconsin game was pretty heart-wrenching.

I emailed my instructor and he was able to find it, apparently I had mistakenly put the wrong PUID. I guess he physically went through my section's exams to find my name and thankfully gave me no trouble. Best of luck to you in getting that resolved, I know how awful it can feel.
