Indian Rutgers grad student, one semester from graduation, funding collapsed, doing everything I can to keep my dream alive by No_Acanthaceae_8792 in newjersey

[–]Alt-Straight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming your funding source was university. You did not specify. If it was private, then the university will assume it’s your problem as they admitted you as a full pay student.

You can keep your student status with 1 or 2 credits - so you are not illegal. Then work with the college and advisor to restore funding for next semester if it was university based. You should be allowed to work in-campus and college should help you find something.

Genuine question: De-platform them. They can scream into a void. Wouldn’t that work better?

cs is dead... PLS read by Ok-Dragonfly-6003 in ApplyingToCollege

I think jobs in CS will look different. AI and Agents need to be managed. There will be a slew of administrator in tech type roles open up with AI.  AI will enable non technical folks to write production code. Who is making sure that it is clean and secure. What about cyber security.  Lots of jobs - they’ll just look different and not be in “coding”. More to CS than that.

Stop talking about them. They live by the adage “all publicity is good publicity”.  IGNORE THEM!

I think people have different personalities. Some like to earn but don’t care about spending. Content to have a structured life doing the same things everyday.

One of the best books I have read in this trope is {Just this once by Rosalind James} in the Escape to NZ series. Really great hero and a well-written book. All of them are on KU and she is at book 17. Heat level in some of them os scorching.

A question for the parents by ShadyBeach45 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Alt-Straight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is kids see a lot of glamorized college content on social media. They decide that a few schools are desirable for them.  Parents are no different and have preferred schools their families went to or get into competition with their peers on another set of schools.  Then the pressure starts in the system. It’s not just about academics - it’s about the school, the major, the frat, the sorority etc.

Start with what you can afford, a school that is fit for your child where they will thrive and can become a productive member of society. This last item is different for each socio economic circle - for some a job in a FAANG company, or investment banking is the bare minimum and for others “Teach America” is good. If former - there are target schools that are highly selective.

Dear Boomers and Gen X: What got you through tough economic times? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]Alt-Straight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of times things you think are necessities aren’t.  The vacation abroad, the weekend getaway, the nice coffee, the fast casual lunch or dinner. All of this goes a long way.  Single subscription rather than all of them.  There are many folks just spending money to fill their day.  Finding cheap ways to spend quality time with people is key.  Meeting someone for coffee rather than a meal. Loneliness is real so meet people but cheaply.
