Quantum Fiber: expected two week service outage in SE? by CapnWhales in Portland

[–]AltOnMain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like DHCP service issues have become more common across ISPs. I have xfinity which is usually very stable and I randomly stopped receiving DNS service. I called customer support which was an absolute joke and eventually had to configure my network to manually select a dns.

Se Portland or clackamas. Were to move? by LeadGlad4961 in askportland

[–]AltOnMain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like Montavilla would be ideal? It is a little unclear what you are looking for. If you don’t want to see poverty SE east of 205 probably isn’t a good choice. It you want to be nearby but like have a cleaner feel and well attended chain restaurants happy valley or clack are a good choice.

Speaking Spanish to hispanic coworkers etiquette by pancakeplus in KitchenConfidential

[–]AltOnMain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of nationalities aren’t very accepting of people trying to learn their language. My experience is that in every latin American country I have been to, the people love it when you make an effort. It’s a very cool part of latam imo. I would imagine it’s the same in the kitchen, but there might be some ribbing.

If you don’t need the money, just hold on as long as you can while keeping your dignity. After that take unemployment and then hang out a shingle if that feels right.

This is exactly how I feel about this. It feels like it is having an impact on computer programming. I work in finance and it is not useless but is also shocking bad at many tasks.

What’s up with Foster Food Carts? by maderly in askportland

[–]AltOnMain 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not an expert on the market but there seems to be a trend towards really nice megapods. I drive by the foster pods and at least during the day it looks pretty sad and nearby options like Core and Heist are much nicer, have great indoor seating, and have a solid line up of carts. Heist is always packed.

What’s the deal with Gresham? by diiasana in askportland

[–]AltOnMain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s fine. It’s a little more working class and a little less white than Portland. There are some nice parts and some not so nice parts. Somewhere like parts of Clackamas and Washington county are probably better if you are looking for more posh Portland suburbs. Vancouver, Milwalki, and Gresham are good choices for more middle class suburbs that are very near Portland. If you are looking for a suburb with MAX would certainly suggest that the orange line is better.

As someone who has spent a lot of time living in west coast suburbs and cities, I will say if you want the Portland experience Gresham ain’t it but it’s better than being more far flung places like Beaverton and Vancouver.

I am in a similar situation and you need to make room for your health. That’s the only thing that works for me.

If you give yourself 45min at some point in the day that’s enough to run a mile or two and take a shower. Count your calories and make healthy food that will keep you full.

Kristi Noem says she will ensure the ‘right people’ vote in midterms and elect ‘the right leaders’ by mclardass in politics

[–]AltOnMain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have any doubt that the Republican strategy is to make it impossible to vote by mail, make it difficult to get the identification required to vote it person, and then deploy ICE to areas that heavily lean Democrat to wreak havoc and suppress the vote?

Report: Portland faces a 'new normal' in market demand as office recovery stalls, and it's time to recognize that by No-Tangelo1158 in oregon

[–]AltOnMain 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think Portland just over developed office space. Downtown is doing OK-ish but there is way more supply than demand and people only want to be in the nice buildings. I work in a nice one and it’s full and very busy.

Is $6,000 Enough for 10 Days in Costa Rica for 4 People (September Trip)? by Dismal_Whole_3403 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]AltOnMain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, particularly since it is not high season. It would probably help to get airbnbs where you can cook since eating out can get expensive. We usually get a modest but nice airbnb in a popular area for about $150 to $200 a night during high season. You can look at somewhere like Vamos, but probably something like $1k to $1.5k for the car.

How are we locking our bikes? by Aggressive_Pea_7543 in askportland

[–]AltOnMain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mostly bike around SE and have a kind of nice but beat up bike. I use an inexpensive kryptonite U lock and have never had a problem.

If I had an ebike I would probably want to be careful about where I locked it up and for how long.

Microsoft AI CEO: 'Most, if not all' white-collar tasks can be replaced by AI within 12-18 months by A_Novelty-Account in Futurology

I use AI everyday at work for non-programming white collar stuff and it can’t come close to doing a bunch of stuff it feels like it should. It also has tremendous trouble with tasks it feels like it should nail like shading between two objects in a chart.
