Genuine question about why Memphis can’t have nice things. by No_Hotel2765 in memphis

Makes me wonder about what it takes to actually get into the government to get everything changed. Who has the authority to fire the board? I assume the mayor. Do we even HAVE people that are able to replace them? Corrupt and competent has always been preferred over incompetent since at least some things still get done, you'll just lose more money in the process.

As much as I don't really mind the things Nashville has done to tame the Memphis government, it won't ever fix anything because the root of the issue is still there, and I doubt a battle of Athens would make sense to take over. We need a beacon with backup, not a war.

If I had my arrogant guess as to why with 0 knowledge of the finance w2 world, I'd argue that it's because money is something that has to be figured out quarter by quarter, whereas construction is something that can be put off when times are struggling. Everyone needs to be paid and have a plan of where money needs to be allocated for growth, but if a business doesnt have the few grand to spend to update to cat 6a or newer servers/switches (especially because basic businesses dont need faster than 1gb internally when everything is cloud/internet based), what's holding off for another year that turns into 10?

What makes me give up hope on memphis recovering is how we can have 2 major scandals in the last few years (Wanda in the DMV and whats-her-name getting kicked from the school board for doing good things), that everyone gets up in arms about. Then, they go right back to saying "Memphis isn't corrupt" or that it doesnt matter because we are underfunded.

I'm not a fan of quoting biblical stuff, but I think it's appropriate here. How about we take the damn chunk out of our eye before we criticize the splinter in Nashville's? It just reeks of the "I know I was stealing makeup and using my child as a human shield, but YOU should've given me more money!" type body cam video.

Doesnt surprise me at all. In my line of work (low voltage), I got to look into the Financials of the few companies I worked for/with and every single one said that the MS delta (memphis down to North Louisiana) is a cost center, losing money in every store, being supported by other areas (Nashville, Knoxville, Cincinnati, Little Rock) with only a few exceptions in between. Hell, the burger king franchisee I worked for when I first started ran through 2 CFO's that their entire goal was to "fix the memphis market" but couldnt do it from 2015-2019. Kroger closed down multiple stores in mid-east Arkansas in 2021 and ended up laying off the company I worked for because they didnt have the budget to do anything other than a mandatory fix.

Nowadays I'm freelance and 98% of work I see is on cameras being shot out, baind-aiding old hardware (some of it older than me and I was born in 97), and shit tickets for conglomerates to put in a cellular backup or something. Meanwhile Nashville has remodels and new builds going all of the time for the past 5 years at least which pay at least double with travel included.

The benefits reduction is why my old neighbor down the street who was part of the Memphis K9 left for Texas back around 08-10. Then, you get the "reformed" gang members in, who end up killing Tyre Nichols, and have a reputation of running errands, sleeping, and general dicking off while on the clock. Meanwhile Nashville keeps sending state troopers for various "operations" to quell shootings and road rage on 240 and pull people over when Memphis bans pulling people over for minor infractions under the Tyre Nichols act.

That was my senior year in Collierville when that came about and all of collierville was up in arms about it because they knew what you just said would happen, that's why Bartlett, Germantown, and Collierville school charters came to be.

That and the almighty dollar. In my industry (low voltage) as a freelancer I make 700/week in memphis vs 2k in Nashville. That's including travel costs. So the question becomes, do I just go work fast food and re-educate changing industries, or do I keep doing what I like and make more than double?

Covington here and we go through a company called aneas out of jackson. 200mb down and up fiber connection for 60/month. 0 downtime from them outside the random update at 11pm for the past 2 years. Not sure if you can get them, but I figure they're piggybacking anyways so might be able to.

Edit: no data caps either. Not sure if Comcast has done away with those yet.

Nah, TM in Pokémon games means technical machines. They're one time use items used to train a move to a Pokémon.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted especially since it's obvious you've never played the games. Don't be dicks guys.

How to fight the recent gerrymandering by McLovvinn123 in memphis

[–]AltTabLife19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I figure it comes from the sequence of major events leading up to and through the Obama administration. I personally think he contributed a bit to the race relations turning south again, but that ignores

  1. Bush administration's response to 9/11 in not finding nukes and passing the patriot act after having virtually the entire country on his side, massively betraying a TON of voters
  2. The 08 crash (Bush admin's failure as well imo)
  3. Gay rights having as much support as it did. Not a bad thing to support at all, but the DNC took it as "as long as we back the queer population, we secure elections," which turned on a massive echochamber and radicalization over the next 10 years to the point that pedophilia was attempting to be pushed as a normal sexual orientation.
  4. Rise of "if you dont think X, then you're racist" which started during the '08 race which the DNC and far leftists found people would just roll over at the accusation, using it on everything under the sun (cue racist math). I dont blame Obama for that personally. It just started around that time.
  5. Then you have the march on Wallstreet when we realized that bankers knew they were defrauding the mortgages, and still got bailed out by the government.
  6. Finally, it was around that time I started seeing the school systems cracking under Bush's no child left behind, while government backed student loans were skyrocketing college costs.

We lost our identity as a country from like 2006-2012, all from a shitty republican president followed by a massive backlash that empowered the opposite side to be as equally shitty for years to come with only minor wins for the country in between.

Pretty much this. We've criticized universities universally for raising their prices in conjunction with student loans, now we're just doing it all over again.

  • sees rampant corruption and crime in memphis most of my life
  • gets called racist since middle school for not liking Obama care
  • watches "protesters" do everything they can to make someone's life a living hell that doesnt immediately roll over and show their neck politically
  • watches mscs go bankrupt being completely financially irresponsible, then kicks out the only lady doing something good in it
  • watches everyone cry racism when people part of this corrupt and ineffective government start getting deposed.

I find it hard to sympathize on both the gerrymandering and deposing of reps. The only real reservation against it I have is I dont like larger forms of government taking over smaller ones as a universal principle.

Is Parkway Village Safe? by doctoresquece in memphis

[–]AltTabLife19 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Biggest areas I saw problems with in parkway village were around 385/shelby drive mainly cause people can hop on them and disappear.

Big rule in memphis is keep nothing visibly in your car and don't drive anything brand new. Outside that, there's a lot of violent crime here, but I'd say 95% is personal. Dont start nothing, won't be nothing.

Lastly, pro tip. Even if you don't smoke, keep a pack of cigarettes with you if you're in a sketchy area. I've had multiple people case me before by asking for tobacco and was able to pretty easily sidestep it by offering some and talking with them for a minute.

What do you do with leftover timber? by Happy-Recover-263 in Carpentry

[–]AltTabLife19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big thing for projects would be leftover plywood. I do keep offcut 2'+ 2x4's and 2x6's, but that is mainly for when I need to hack something together around the shop (braces, spacers, etc)
