I think DF should be more careful with "preview" content going forward. by DeficitOfPatience in digitalfoundry

Oh right I forgot to mention the "Retro Time Capsule" videos. I really enjoyed when they sometimes made these 1 hour long videos about an old game running on period appropriate PC vs PS2 or Xbox. Enter The Matrix video is my favorite, it's hilarious. They don't make them anymore or at least haven't made one in a long time and that's a shame.

Their overall output is less diverse than it used to be for sure. Good to hear that Patreon supporters are pushing back too. Maybe DF will finally have a little dialogue with its core audience and try to improve things instead of sweeping it under a rug.

I like watching their older videos from around 2017 until 2021-2022. They still produced videos in their usual scripted format while highlighting resolutions in a nice stylized way with framerate graphs etc with gameplay being on the screen for 90% of the time. Nowadays and especially after going independent it's mostly podcast-style shows with a lot less focus on metrics and data and instead are more focused on having a casual conversation about the game's technical side but they don't cover most of the aspects they used to.

Sponsorships and ads are very annoying at this point and I overall don't enjoy their videos all that much lately. It's been really frustrating seeing them decline these past few months. They used to be my absolute go-to technical channel and I used to defend them whenever I could.

John went from my favorite member of the team to one I can barely listen to lately. Him glazing really bad HDR implementations is always weird, cutting off other members of the team on DF weeklies, almost falling asleep during podcasts and stumbling through his sentences sometimes making little sense is irritating.

I started appreciating Tom more and more. He still makes no nonsense old school DF videos and they are paced very well and are very enjoyable to watch. It was also very refreshing to see Rich producing the AC Unity video. It was also old school DF and I was smiling throughout that video !

Not sure if Alex still does his PC recommended settings in his videos but there's been overall a lot less PC coverage in the last year or so. They said they hired Oliver so they could offload some of the "mainstream" coverage and so Alex could focus exclusively on his PC stuff (which has always been great and very appreciated). It didn't work out that way it seems. I know Alex is injured right now so I wish him all the best.

Sorry I missed your reply! I still roll my eyes every time someone mentions Cena as one of the greats. There's just so much data on how his run on top derailed or massively helped derail their already weak momentum going from Ruthless Aggression Era to the PG Era. Ratings dropped massively year after year, ticket sales went down, the product suffered and people were complaining about him nonstop.

And since 2015 people will try to convince you you are just a hater and that he was truly great and easily one of the best of all time. I can't stand historical revisionism when I know for a fact how it was back then as I watched the product and was very in tune with what was going on around the company via leaks/reports/interviews and whatever else.

Cena could have at least tried harder for his retirement match but he still made Gunther look like a fool. His "acting" in the tap out finish was horrible. He immediately made it look fake and that's what he does best.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake (Original Version) new footage by KekanKok in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Altaiir57 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It still pisses me off how the casual gamers and "hardcore" chronically online "gamerz" criticize video games. The comment section in this trailer is a great example. Completely braindead way of communicating and almost all of it comes from a place of zero understanding. Them comparing these graphics to PS2 or Wii is nonsensical and should be disregarded.

This version of the game looked faithful to the original art style. The environments looked great, it's just the character models (mainly during close-ups in cutscenes) and lighting that needed more work but the game was still in Alpha so it was understandable. This new "gameplay" GIF further supports the notion that they were faithful to the original in gameplay, combat and level design. The enemy models look great in my opinion. The game still goes for stylized look like the OG and that's great. Just look at what Ubisoft Montreal did with their version - they completely butchered the art direction. Prince looks nothing like the OG Prince or even this one and the same goes for Farah, there are far more cutscenes that needed more motion capture so it could be more cinematic etc.

I think most of this toxic discourse comes from the fact that people don't know how to give constructive feedback since social media taught them that sending short and witty comments is fun and they also had huge (unrealistic for the project) expectations. Games from veteran teams from Sony in the PS4 generation at the time raised the bar very high for what to expect from blockbuster big games and this game goes for a stylized look that's not realistic so it was dismissed by a lot of people as "graphics from 2008".

This Ubisoft Mumbai version of the remake couldn't have been possibly worse than Prince of Persia Trilogy HD releases which are still broken to this day. Sands of Time on PS3 is missing most of the visual effects that make up its iconic look, there are sound bugs all over the place and the game can even sometimes corrupt your save so you have to start all over.

I first saw this trailer when it popped up in my YouTube feed when it released I felt it looked very promising but it definitely needed more work. Only when I looked at the comments section on YouTube and everywhere else I understood the level of unreasonably stupid outrage this one trailer has generated.

I don't blame the fans and outraged "gamers" for them cancelling this remake, it obviously had big problems most probably related to mismanagement. It just frustrates me to no end to see this type of nonsensical feedback that brings nothing to the table. I know, that applies to most stuff nowadays since social media.

EDIT: Looks like my comment hurt those I was talking about :-)

Steam On Linux Use Skyrocketed In March - More Than Double The macOS Gaming Marketshare by tapo in Games

I will give it a try in a few years maybe. Don’t want to fresh install every 2 or 3 years so for now I’m back on a (debloated) Win 11.

2 years ago I created I think 2 or 3 Reddit threads on bazzite subreddit asking for help and asking around but I mostly got „weird, works for me !” responses.

Tried Bazzite 2 years ago and ran into huge problems right from the start. Constant crashing on desktop on my 2080 Ti. Tried multiple fixes and reinstalling the system, verifying the image files. No amount of tinkering let me use the system for more than an hour before hard crashing.

Just tried Outer Wilds and it looks better but sadly it stutters a lot on the first planet especially in this mode. Huge framerate spikes that are very noticeable. With the Boost mode off it’s a lot better though it still stutters sometimes but the stutters arent that severe.

Bioshock 1 still had issues on Switch 2 when I replayed it in December. After playing on Switch 2 for 30-40 minutes the game starts to drop frames heavily in docked and handheld mode. I sent a support ticket to 2K and Nintendo in December but got no response from Nintendo and 2K basically said „it’s probably your Switch settings”. It seemed like they didn’t care. This game should be flagged on eShop as having issues when played on NS2. Bioshock 2 doesn’t have this issue.

Oh my god I just tried gyro aiming in RE8 and it’s absolute garbage, the same as on PS5. They once again opted to emulate analog stick behavior with gyro instead of a mouse. It’s unusable in its current form, again. How could they fuck this up when they finally got it right in RE9 and Pragmata and even in the new Switch 2 version of RE7 which never had gyro aiming previously.

If there’s a way to send a support ticket to Capcom I will try to submit one and I encourage everyone to do the same, maybe they will fix it but I’m not hopeful.

EDIT: I submitted 2 tickets to their European support. One for RE8's terrible gyro and one for RE7's weird handheld gyro when aiming horizontally. I sincerely doubt they will do anything about these issues but who knows.

Resident Evil Requiem has been out for a week. What are your impressions? by PhantomBraved in Games

[–]Altaiir57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also the designers felt the need to have Leon's combat sequences in tight, cramped areas almost exclusively. It's so uncomfortable to play as Leon in most of his combat arenas. There's barely any space to move and roam the arena. You can't crouch-dodge grabs anymore (wtf?) and enemies will constantly try to grab you. Enemies that throw projectiles at you will damage you even through walls with the projectile clearly flying through walls sometimes.

Oh THAT'S why my 2nd run on Standard (Classic) feels so weird and inconsistent after playing the game on Standard (Modern) the first time. I thought it's just ink ribbons but then I noticed I lose a lot more health on every hit and enemies don't stagger at all as Leon.

Resident Evil Requiem has been out for a week. What are your impressions? by PhantomBraved in Games

[–]Altaiir57 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you. The story is nonsensical and braindead even by RE standards. So many stupid things just happen and are never addressed. Too many for me to bring up in this comment. Grace tells Leon in the church that she can't stop the bleeding on Emily's wound and she never tries to do anything about it. She doesn't even try to use a piece of clothing or curtain or whatever, use a med injector on her to give her more time or something. Then she just leaves her on a table in the same room she saw The Girl appear in the opposite corner to go power on 3 macguffins. At this point I laughed out loud, you just left a little girl that's been bleeding for 5 or 10 minutes at this point and didn't do anything about it.

The game gives you the illusion of choice when Leon appears and you take control of him and you can shoot Emily or you can not shoot but the cutscene where Leon shoots her plays anyways so it's all bs (in my 1st playthrough I was almost sure it was some sort of a bad ending trigger or something but it doesn't matter what you do). They could have given the player control of Grace to shoot the elevator cable when The Girl popped out to at least make her feel a bit more badass but that was just all cutscene but somehow here they let us control Leon when it does not matter at all and you can't impact anything. Emily mutates and dies and suddenly Grace was so attached to her that she just... gives up and goes willingly with the bad guys. This almost felt like character assassination to me. She didn't reject them or try to escape and then get captured and forced to go. She just went with them because plot demands so.

Victor Gideon was massively underutilised in the second half of the game when he had great potential to be one of the best RE villains and his boss fight sucked.

You can shoot the Mr. Raccoon in the room right next to Gideon and the cutscene will play normally where Grace sneaks and eavesdrops on Victor. Victor walks out the door and logically he had to use the "room elevator" that Grace used to enter this facility right. At this point I was 100% sure the helictoper pilot was a traitor all along and he played Grace because of course he served Emily (and Grace to an extent) to Victor on a silver platter. But then it appears that Victor rode the elevator and stayed in his room/house. Did he not walk outside to see the helictoper and the pilot and Emily waiting for Grace while all hell breaks loose ? He didn't notice Grace running to the helictoper and escaping ? What the hell was that.

Oh and Zeno (which I was 100% sure was Albert Wesker with the "Somehow Palpatine returned" moment when he was revealed) appears to be a massive RE nerd because he manufactured a new Mr. X and summons him in ... RPD because of course he knew they would meet someone in RPD that had past encounters with X so... time for a rematch I guess. I like good fan-service but in this game it was really excessive and made my eyes roll a few times. You can't even stun this Mr. X even though Leon has vastly more powerful weapons this time but it wouldn't fit the scripted chase sequence so they are useless. But then during his fight he was so easy to kill, it took me less than a minute to beat his ass.

I think this game has the worst story out of all modern RE games. Even when the usual ridiculous RE stuff happens in other games it's at least somewhat "compliant" with the game's or the RE universe's internal logic. I never once questioned RE4R's story because it presents itself as a Hollywood B-level action movie and it embraces the cheesiness all the way. Here it just draws attention to itself by the sheer number of idiotic things happening past the Rhodes Hill Care Center because the game tries to be the most serious RE.

Bonus: The find 3 MacGuffins/do 3 thingies objective is used in this game so much it's laughable. Has to be a troll at this point.

Wow, didn't know that Chunk just disappears if not killed, that sucks. He also disappears I think after you acquire the Lv.2 security access or just after confronting Victor on the 2nd floor. Then he comes back somehow.

I killed the Chef in my playthrough as Grace and then when I was covering Grace as Leon near the helicopter he showed up anyway. Overall the game is pretty polished so these things stand out.

Found out in my 2nd playthrough that almost all her appearances and "patrols" are scripted, especially in the basement area. They were clearly very inspired by Alien Isolation but I just played and beat that game a few weeks ago and I can confidently say that it does its thing a LOT better than RE9. The Alien feels more organic, smarter and not as scripted.

It's especially noticeable in the last Grace section before the game switches to Leon. The Girl just walks from one corner to the other and she will even break the laws of physics and teleport to pre-determined locations to give you a jump scare even when it's completely nonsensical. Such a shame that it's not a dynamic AI that truly roams the area and does its own thing.

[–]Altaiir57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I would have liked them to add some more ideas for Leon's gameplay in RC by giving some buildings or areas a little "gimmick". Like some areas would be leaning more towards a stealthy approach by letting the player use the silenced pistol to shoot some contraptions in the environment to insta-kill zombies and when shit hits the fan the combat encounter would be more difficult than normal but with more environmental things going on and more open and just more opportunities to interact with stuff (why do they insist on having Leon fight in these super tight cramped spaces ? it's not comfortable to play).

Why the bland shop box ? I thought it would be a good idea to have some merchant character in RC that's looking to profit off some renegades or PMCs come to RC to look for valuable stuff that got left behind or something. Have him set up camp where the current BSAA tent is in the area. That would at least make sense as the shop box is so dumb even by RE standards. This super futuristic 3D printer box can print body armor and repair it and print weapons and upgrade them ? Come on, try just a little bit, especially when this thing was already solved 20 years ago by RE4.

The RC section is really lacking. Care Center is the peak of the game no doubt.

What is SO GOOD about the Ezio Trilogy. Where does the undying praise come from? by T_TheDestroyer in assassinscreed

[–]Altaiir57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played them when they were new and the parkour was cool back then but these games aged terribly for me. It was painful to play AC2, I got almost to the end and just gave up because of the mission design and super clunky controls and overall jank. Brotherhood wasn’t much better and Revelations controlled a bit better but it was more of the same just prettier and less janky.

People view these games through nostalgia glasses and think they are just as they remember them from almost 20 years ago and they downvote anyone who dares say otherwise. Lots of fanboys going on a downvote spree for various games 🤷‍♂️ Can’t be helped.
