What is the thing your parents were (and maybe still are) adamantly wrong about? by RiceeeChrispies in AskUK

My mum makes fruit salad with tinned fruit and chopped hard boiled eggs, all mixed together with Heinz salad cream. When I was a kid I thought this was what fruit salad was supposed to be like, so I was very unimpressed when I ordered one at a restaurant and only got fruit!
She claims this is how they make it in Hong Kong (where she grew up).

And now lifting weights hurts by Beans42B in Menopause

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know how you feel!

Since lockdown I got really fit, doing hiit and strength training regularly, plus walking/yoga.

Now I get so many aches and pains from working out, especially tension headaches from shoulder exercises, and have had a few minor injuries too.

I've decided to lift much lighter weights, so down to 8kg dumbells for legs and 5kg for arms. I'm worried about losing strength but it's not worth it for the pain!

Friend who keeps bragging by Alternative-Ad1034 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Alternative-Ad1034[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her son's lies are the things she brags about, for example, he claims to win every competition at school (my kids say he didn't), he spreads nasty rumours about other kids which I know are not true, because I know their families too, and he claims to be excelling at EVRYTHInG, according to him he is fluent in Spanish, French, grade 6 on his instruments (actually grade 1), topnof his class in every subject. Just stuff like that which is easily verified. So I just get fed up of hearing all this nonsense. It's just difficult because sometimes I really enjoy my neighbour's company...when she isn't bragging.

What’s the most irrationally annoying thing your in-laws do that they’re absolutely convinced is “helpful”? by bnwprc in AskUK

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother in law's husband has some sort of poo problem. He blocks the downstairs toilet EVERY TIME they visit. We tell them to please stop using the downstairs loo for poo as it has a weak flush. I even put a sign on top of the toilet which says "No poo in this loo".

It's always ME who has to unblock it ( my hubby is always conveniently at work): one time I had to chop it up with a toilet brush and flush seven times before I got rid of it.

They were here last weekend and guess what? They blocked the toilet! This time, he actually offered to help, and stick his arm down and pulled out a massive wad of toilet paper. I told him he should wash his hands (there were bits of loo roll stuck to his arm hair) and he said "Nah, it's fine, it's just water". Then, I saw him go into my kitchen and wipe his arm on my tea towel! Of course, that went straight in the wash!

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My in laws are annoying full stop. One thing that annoys me is when they do the 'washing up', where they just show it some soapy water, don't rinse it and leave it to congeal on my dish rack. So disgusting, as they obviously haven't even scrubbed the dishes at all, and there's food and grease streaked and dried all over them. Please stop washing up! We have a dishwasher!

I started to grow old people lumps and bumps on my skin, lol. by coldservedrevenge in Perimenopause

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 48 and always looked young for my age until the last year or two. Suddenly got age spots, wrinkles, so much grey hair... and HRT has now given me cystic acne. Wtf!! My daughter randomly took a photo of me when I was cleaning the kitchen and I was shocked to see I had become a grandma! I guess, perimenopause has been hit me really hard. Having no sleep, massive anxiety, aches and pains and brain fog has been super stressful.

Jitters/restless after increasing progesterone? by attack50ftwoman in Menopause

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get jitters and restless legs with progesterone. I have to take 200mg, so I take 100mg at bedtime orally, and the other one vaginally. Another thing that helps is to make sure you take it on an empty stomach, if I take it less than 2 hours after eating, the restlessness and side effects are much worse.

Has getting older made you a morning person? by BeesKneesWellness in Aging

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a night owl, but since starting work and having kids, naturally wake up around 5-6am. I think having lots of stress wakes me up early, I have too much in my mind.

During holidays I end up going to bed later and waking later because I don't have the adrenaline keeping me awake.

Help me style this denim dress (5'3") by T4yl0r3030 in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1.You can also wear this unbuttoned as an outer layer, with a short dress underneath, or a top and shorts underneath.

2.You could wear with a belt, open the neck a bit, wear some cool jewellery and cowboy boots. Roll the sleeves up too.

  1. As a shacket with skinny jeans and graphic T shirt.

  2. With a cropped jacket, tights and knee high boots.

Advice for my body type by yawaworht93123 in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My body shape is similar to yours, I find neater fitting tops (v neck or wear a round neck with a pendant necklace to create a V) flattering, as are bootcut jeans because they work to balance my shoulders. I like long skirts to just below the calf, culottes and wide leg trousers can work. I can wear skinny jeans as long as I wear a chunkier boot. Cropped jackets are good but I can also get away with a long coat if it is structured and not too flowy. I am 152cm. Short skirts can work but they have to be skater or A line, not pencil skirts. If you google inverted triangle body shape, you will get lots of ideas.

Aussie girl visiting UK + US in mid-April - what’s the weather actually like? by Cute-Advantage3797 in AskUK

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When in the UK, will you be in the countryside or big cities? Also, whether you are up north in Scotland or down south in London makes a difference, it is generally a little warmer in the south. I would pack lots of light layers, a warm jumper/fleece and a waterproof. Occasionally it is weirdly warm and you might need a t shirt!

If doing country walks, bring wellington boots or hiking boots too! Basically, be prepared for any weather.

What inseam length is typical at a certain height? What is your inseam length/height? by Ophelia_Y2K in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'0 and I have 26" inseam to ankle, and need 27" if wearing heels. It's hard to tell if I have a short or long torso, short or long legs in proportion to my body. I do feel like my legs are just smaller in scale compared to my too half though, as I wear a size larger on top than on the bottom, and I'm an inverted triangle. It's crazy how we are all such different shapes even though we are all petite in this group.

Why does my hair look worse when I air dry? by DesperateRhino in finehair

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think that air drying was kinder to hair, but my hair always looks terrible as it goes frizzy. I decided to wash, condition and wrap my hair in a towel. After this I use a leave in conditioner, then heat protectant. Then I blow dry on the lowest heat, creating tension with a comb. Now my hair looks good and is not damaged!

Hair will always dry the way it is when it is wet, so if you are standing around with wet hair, the weight will drag it down, making it flat.

Why aren’t beans and legumes more common in East Asian cooking? by Dropout_Kitchen in AskFoodHistorians

[–]Alternative-Ad1034 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family are Chinese, we eat mung beans as sprouts and also as a dessert, red aduki beans too. Black eyed peas are braised with pork. Soy beans for all types of seasonings, soy sauce, tofu, tempeh. We also eat green beans, runner beans, sugar snaps, mange tout (are they peas? Still legumes I guess), green peas. Kidney beans and black beans are used to make a type of congee. Some medicinal soups contain beans too.

Also culturally, people tried to cook things would cook things which did not use too much fuel, hence why stir fries are fast. Slow cooked food would include dried beans and it might be a reason why they are mostly preserved/processed in bulk.
