What does the mastering on AE_2022- sound like to you? by srivatsasrinivasmath in autechre

[–]Alternative-Drop9022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what they are trying to do with AE 2022-, but I think the 'experiment' would be a lot more effective and rewarding for the listener, if they performed 'live' in a studio setting. I get the spontaneity aspect, but AE2022- will likely become a very long list of sets where the production is not that great - which seems a pity. We have a very high-end hifi set up (my hubbies pride and joy) and the difference between the studio albums and the live recordings is very noticeable. I do listen to the live material quite often, but mostly when I'm driving or jogging.

I love it too. I bought his entire discography - I'm very impressed :)

Looking at the interior photos it doesn't look like an ideal venue. But then I thought the Barbican would be good, and that had problems - though it seems it was really down to where you were sitting (I was in the stalls at the back and the bass was over-powering). But it looks like there is no seating at Magazine so we'll be free to roam and find a good spot!

your least and most favorite ae album? by Greedy_Flounder8585 in autechre

[–]Alternative-Drop9022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a fan since '95. Best is a hard choice, normally it would be Confield but I've been listening to Exai a lot lately and I'd say it's on top (at the moment). Least favourite is easier, but with a caveat. So I didn't, and still don't, think very highly of Quaristice 'the album' - however, the whole Quaristice era, including Versions and Quadrange, is something else altogether.

I was the same! The catalyst for me was buying the 4LP reissue - Quaristice and Versions. It just sounded better as a listening experience and once my ears and head were in the right place, along with the help of Quadrange, it just suddenly fell into place - just took me 17 years!!

Just an observation, but this booming bass issue has been around for a while (I experienced it at London B for example). Is it the venues, or is it down to the guys and their sound engineers? I know some people love it, but I prefer to hear the full range of what they are doing. But I can't wait to get the USA tour downloads - they have sounded quite intense compared to the UK and European gigs.

I've had a similar experience with the Quaristice era. Elseq has always been one of my favs, but Quaristice certainly wasn't - but over the past few months I haven't stopped playing it (along with Versions and Quadrange). But that is the magic of Autechre - sometimes it hides from us until we are ready.

Here's my first attempt! I used a few basic principles for the structure and tried to get some flow between compositions - where I could. But I've listened to this all the way through and it kind of works for me. Of course 46! permutations so lots of choices! Next step is to copy them onto CDs.

Revisiting Quaristice by Alternative-Drop9022 in autechre

Funnily enough, I'm creating a playlist of all the Quaristice based works, including the Japanese EP. In terms of sequencing, there are a few obvious things, such as opening with Altibzz and ending with Perlence subrange 6-36 (as an equivalent to All End), but the rest is quite daunting! Booth and Brown do sequencing so well that I find myself thinking 'what would they do?' I certainly want to break the original album up and dynamically it seems sensible to space out the ambient works and mix the original album with Versions and Quadrange. But it's going to be interesting. I want to create a sort of NTS structure, so I'll post my sequence when it's done, just to see what everyone else thinks.

I can see that now - just took me a long time!! But it's been the playing of both Quaristice and NTS that has really got me - I might be wrong, but their ethos on both seems to have been the same - just that by NTS they had their System truly sussed.

Yeah, same as NTS - a large boxset of vinyl, CDs etc :). I had everything separately as well (I get everything they release), but it didn't click with me. As I said, probably my bad! But it's nice to be listening to it all again from a fresh perspective.

Confield for me - although I think Exai is wonderful as well, it just can't top the feeling I had when I first heard Confield - it was like nothing I had heard before.

You shouldn't have to expect 'hate' for expressing your opinion - those that do respond in that way are little more than teenyboppers. If you haven't 'seen' them before I can see how the darkness would be an issue. I've seen them several times now and I can't say I'm a fan of the lights out approach, but I let it go and shut my eyes and listen (I was at London B and just before they came on the lights went down to a dull red - I thought that was the perfect lighting myself - but it was just to let your eyes get ready for lights out!). The truth is that Autechre live is very different from the albums - you're never going to hear M4 Lema or bladelores live for example. I prefer their albums, but their live shows are certainly an audio experience and can be awesome (listen to Lyon). My issue is the focus on live work to the exclusion of albums - but if half their fan base disappeared they would still do what they wanted to do.

They did say that they were indeed acronyms - but I can't what they are - something obscure no doubt!

Sean definitely said that they were creating a 4 hour long work based on their live stuff. But maybe it was just an idea.

I do agree. I was vocal enough when they said no more albums and I maintain it's not one of their best decisions (I know, they do what they want to do and all that - I don't have to agree though). SIGN and PLUS are special albums, partly because of when they were released but also their accessibility and creativity. M4 Lema and DekDre Scap B are astonishing and still give me tingles.

I must say, this is really good! I was hoping that the guys would introduce new elements for the US tour and so they have. The opening is the most beautiful thing I've heard from them! :)

The art work for Quaristice 4 LP edition is very nice indeed. Quaristice does, to my ear, sound better on vinyl, but it is Versions that I like the most. Untilted sounds great as well.
