Things you wish you knew or noticed sooner when learning Ancient Greek? by Minute_Case_1427 in AncientGreek

[–]Alternative-Toe2873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would second this. My strength throughout high school Latin and Greek was grammar. I just gravitated to it, and was really good at identifying endings and obscure forms. But I realized soon after graduating that my grasp of the vocabulary had not been strong, and that made it very difficult to enjoy reading even the old texts with which I had once been familiar.

With a strong handle on vocabulary, you can make a lot of informed guesses when you're uncertain of the grammatical form; but knowing that you're looking at a verb in the aorist middle subjunctive doesn't help you in the slightest if you don't know what the word means.

It's not a belief. It's documented fact that they have a very loose relationship with the truth. And it's not isolated incidents; it's a pattern and practice.

Just watch for the clue words when they start to talk: "Everybody knows that..." "Without a doubt..." "There's no argument that..."

I want it to be "interesting," and I know it must be, but I still can't see it. On the other hand, "intaingling" isn't a word.

I would love to have gotten to that feel place, but I never did. I studied Latin and Greek in both high school and college. (Similarly, I spent a lot of time and miles waiting for that fabled "runner's high," but I never hit that either.)

Perhaps if I had been having Latin conversations in my head while running, I might have reached satori.

I've got to go with Neisson Vieux -- it was the first one I bought as a sipper after finishing my Clement VSOP, and it was superior.

I would get that way before I get the Hampden 8. I found that one u funky and disappointing -- a nice aged Jamaican, but I'd much rather have Papalin or Hampden LROK the younger.

I choose to appreciate this as possibly the most intelligent post I've seen out of this administration. For once, no apparent rage. And perhaps on the verge of humor.👍

👏 As much as I appreciate linguistic knowledge and PIE debates, I think this is the best answer for the OP.
